Odds of Current Angels Being Traded
My story up at SBNLA calculates the odds of Angels from the 2011 roster being traded.
Methodology: An emphasis on salary relief and positional logjams.
Bobby Abreu leads off at even money and an infielder of ours follows him closely at 2-1. Can you guess who?

Not really surprised
Interleague play has only existed since 1997, and Albert Pujols has the highest batting average of any player since 2000.
Guess who has the lowest.
Ummm I know this one
The former owner of the # 5… What’s his face?

No, Brian Downing didn't play interleague. And he wouldn't have had the lowest BA either.
If the Halos don't care about the way they play, then why should I?
Your right

I'd rank Trumbo as a better bet to be traded due to the low OBP you mentioned plus the need to restock the farm.
His youngness, cheapness and powerness might be enough to overshadow his OBP-challengedness to get us some decent prospects. After Reagins, the farm is thin. Do we still lose a draft pick for the Pujols and Wilson signings under the new CBA?

1. They “reported” Manny Ramirez signed with the Angels last January… and then deleted the tweet after it wasn’t true.
2. 5 days ago they reported Abreu had been traded… and then deleted the tweet.
3. 2 weeks ago they “reported” Amarista had been notified he was traded to the Mets for David Wright — and then deleted the tweet.

These absurd trade proposals are hilarious. On paper that trade would be even worse than the Wells deal. Two all star caliber players for one all star caliber player that hasn’t played baseball in almost two years that is about to be a free agent and another declining player making almost $10MM next season. Friedman would never hear the end of it if he traded the franchise player for two guys about to be free agents and one first baseman that goes entire months with one walk.

If we can trade Abreu, that practically solves our log jam problem,
assuming Trumbo can be successful enough at 3B. In fact, I think that Trumbo just needs to be able to do the minimum in order to get the job, and I suspect that he’ll rise to the occasion and do even better than that. With Trumbo at 3rd, we can put Morales in as DH. Problem solved. And if Morales isn’t healthy by the beginning of the season, we can have a platoon of Trumbo/Izzy/Callaspo at 3B/DH until he’s ready. Getting rid of Abreu is the key.
I would really hate to see Trumbo go, so I hope they can find a solution that includes him staying with the club. I think it would be a big loss.
by Jason Andrew Martin on Dec 10, 2011 1:46 AM PST reply actions
Defense will still be really important to the Halos since they've invested so much money in their starting rotation
I hope I’m wrong, but I expect Trumbo to be pretty brutal at the hot corner. I think sometimes people get too wrapped up in what a lineup might look like, while ignoring the impact it will have on defense. I thought I was going to lose my mind yesterday when I actually saw people suggesting the Angels move Pujols to 3B to make room for Trumbo. If Trumbo could fit at 3B nicely and boost his OBP about 40-60 points I’d be pumped, but I’m not holding my breath. It will be difficult to find the type of value a lot of Angels fans would want for Trumbo since there a fewer GM’s around today that disregard OBP like Reagins did.
by Howie the Halo on Dec 10, 2011 2:05 AM PST up reply actions
I hope you're wrong, too =).
Trumbo was a pleasant surprise at 1B last season, and hopefully can be one at 3B in 2012. I just hope he at least gets the opportunity to try before they ship him off.
by Jason Andrew Martin on Dec 10, 2011 2:18 AM PST up reply actions
I still think Trumbo will surprise us. I don’t make much of the winter ball time. It was very tiny sample with almost not time to work their before hand or anything. Second he has shown to be much more athletic and mobile since he was in the minors. (minor league coaches have said this much). Don’t get me wrong I don’t think he is going to step in and be great or anything but I think their is a good chance he can be around average and improve quickly as he did at 1st base defensively.
And I do have a feeling he will improve in many statistical areas like BA, OBP, BB, SO this year. How much idk but those are some areas I could see the Pujols move helping him out. Partly because im not so sure he didn’t press as a rookie last year feeling the pressure of being our only source of power most of the season. This year should be a lot dif. and I think he is bound to improve himself in the offseason to boot.
(Now to hope these things all do happen :) )
by MoralesHomers on Dec 10, 2011 3:04 AM PST up reply actions
3B Defense
I have to assume that Trumbo will be pretty bad there. The Angels could do some defense type platoons there by playing Callaspo/Izturis there when Wilson/Haren (especially Wilson) pitch and letting Trumbo try when Santana/Weaver pitch (fly ball tendencies).
Yea I agree.
I do think Abreu is the most likely to get traded and the key to breaching the log jam we have. I think second is parting with Izzy potentially.
Outfield I feel will be:
Torii, Borjous, Wells, with Trout being the backup and guy to spell them.
With the infield I really do hope and think that Trumbo can be serviceable at 3rd base this season. Prove enough to convince the FO that he can make that transition maybe over a years time. Ideal for this year would probably be around 60ish games at 3rd. That would allow Kendry to come back and prove himself healthy first at DH and if all goes well spell Albert at 1st if for nothing else but to see Kendry on the field and how he does coming back.
I do think if Kendry is healthy and Trumbo seems to be able to make the transition we will trade Morales. I really don’t see us trading Trumbo though as it could leave us really thin at 1st base at the end of the year when Morales is a FA and likely willn’t resign with us.
by MoralesHomers on Dec 10, 2011 2:57 AM PST up reply actions
replay fail: the logjam is more because of VW than Abreu
if we didn’t have VW it would be great to have Abreu on the bench as a lefty who can actually work the count. Abreu is a pretty effective hitter to put in for all kinds of late-game situations.
I could live with trading Izzy too, though he does a lot of similar things that Abreu does.
Callaspo is probably a more productive player than Trumbo
Trumbo had an awful OBP last year, and my expectation (although I hope it’s not true) is that he gets worse this year when pitchers realize they never have to throw him a strike. I also really doubt he can handle third base.
I think Trumbo is fine as a part-time guy or a bat off the bench if Morales proves he can stay in the lineup.

by Gorbachav5 on Dec 10, 2011 9:09 AM PST up reply actions 1 recs
I highly disagree
Realize that although his OBP may never be great if he improves his walk % by about 3 percent witch is more than dueable for a rookie who first has pressure taken off of him, Works on plate discipline, has better batters around him. If he does improve by about that much his OBP will be around .315. So while that isn’t spectacular by any means it’s not horrible either. (and you didn’t say it the person below you did but I see nothing to make me believe we have seen the best of Trumbo I find that idea kinda ridiculous).
by MoralesHomers on Dec 10, 2011 11:03 AM PST up reply actions
It's definitely a pessimistic comment that could turn out to be very wrong about Trumbo's future, but before you say ridiculous, consider this write-up:

After this off-season, I have no recollection of this Del Ninja character we use to discuss.
Guy most likely to be traded: Vernon Wells
I know it’s wishful thinking, but that contract is still an albatross, that OBP is still sucktastic, and he’s still blocking a potential Rookie of the Year who will catch many more of Jered Weaver’s and C.J. Wilson’s fly balls. Also, the lineup is heavily right-handed, so I think Abreu lasts for as long as Morales’ health is unknown.
Dipoto has clearly demonstrated his knack for big surprises and thinking outside of the box.
Trading Vernon Wells would fit that methodology. Honestly, I would not at all be surprised if it happened.
A wise man does not need advice and a fool won't take it.
Yeah if we trade Abroo and Izzy or Collapso we'll have a lineup of all right handed hitters
trying to hit to the opposite field to move the runner. Now that will be one heckuva offense.

^^ This ^^
Abreu goes nowhere. He is one of our precious few left-handed bats; he gets on base; he sees a lot of pitches; and he is a good base runner. Right now, I see him in a platoon with Wells in left field and Trumbo at DH. Even if Kendrys is healthy, Abreu can platoon with Wells and be a valuable asset off the bench. To be sure, Abreu is not worth $9 million. But other teams know that, and we would not recoup that value if we were to trade him.
Wells is the one who needs to go because he is blocking our top prospect. Trading Abreu would not change this fact. Trout now almost certainly will begin the season in AAA, barring injury to someone. We are unlikely to trade Wells with his value what it is right now. Instead, we will give him the opportunity to re-establish some value. If he does, we will trade him; if he doesn’t, we will cut him by mid-season.
by Brody on Dec 10, 2011 6:54 AM PST via mobile up reply actions
Well, Brody if you're saying this :
…Abreu is not worth $9 million. But other teams know that, and we would not recoup that value if we were to trade him.
Don’t you think every other team in MLB knows damn well that Vernon Wells is not worth $21 million per season or whatever that godawful number of dollars is we are paying him per season???
I should add that he would have to have a pretty damn good first half to "re-establish" enough value to cause another team to want to take on a good part of that salary...
We could never get another team to take on all of Wells's remaining salary
That is $63 million for the next three seasons. But, depending on how he performs for the first several months next season, another team might be willing to take on half of his remaining salary at the time of the trade, and that would be worth it for us.
maybe if VW starts the year good they could ship him out and eat a smaller portion of salary
but trading him now would require eating way too much of that contract. he should be better batting behind Pujols, and could potentially put up a decent year for the Halos. you never know

Kendrys Morales is under team control for 2012 and 2013
Cot’s Baseball Contracts (which is a remarkably accurate source for contract details) shows that Morales is not eligible for free agency until after the 2013 season.
In this article by ESPN’s Jason Stark he mentions that Morales is under the Angels control through the 2013 season.
In MLB Trade Rumors list of players eligible for free agency after 2012, Kendrys is not listed.
In an article earlier this year, NBC Sports noted that Morales would not be a free agent until after 2013.
If he's non-tendered this year, doesn't he then become a free agent?
After this off-season, I have no recollection of this Del Ninja character we use to discuss.
Some of the comments suggested Morales was eligible for free agency after 2012.
I wanted to provide clarity that the club has control of him at least for 2012 and 2013.
If he is non-tendered, I think that’s a terrible sign. It could mean that the injury is so severe that it is career-ending.

Also, why would we want a player with a sub .300 OBP hitting 5th? Hunter most certainly hits ahead of Trumbo.
by YouthofToday on Dec 10, 2011 2:47 PM PST up reply actions
because you're not paying your #5 to walk
you’re paying him to drive in runs, something Trumbo does pretty well, given the fact he was just a rookie last year.
Trumbo, theoretically, is on the upswing, at the beginning of his career. He stands to improve. Chances are, Torii will continue to regress. Even with Trumbo’s awful OBP last year, he and Torii has identical OPS’ and OPS+’s. With Torii behind Tumbo, there is a chance Trumbo might see some better pitches.
Also, Torii propensity to GIDP scares the crap out of me.

Re trades: I do think Izzy and Abreu are toast. No matter how creative DiPoto gets, nobody is going to take Vernon off our hands unless that date rape drug is heavily involved, and I doubt the commissioner will let that one slide.
Man, whoever updated Pujols wikipedia page must be a Cards fan
Would Dipoto hold onto Abreu, Trumbo and Morales until the season started?
Any way Dipoto just hangs onto those three until the season starts and try to see if their trade stock goes up (mainly Morales)?
If Morales were healthy I would want him the lineup, not traded.
Willits? Check. Reagins? Check. Mathis? Check

I think it would be wisest to wait until the season starts. A) We’ll see who is healthy and hitting well. B) We’ll see where we might have some holes to fill, i.e. if Walden blows a few saves early, we’d know we need more bullpen help.

With the new t.v. deal, why trade anyone?
I might be missing something here, but with $150M per year coming just from t.v., why do we need to trade anyone?
I’ve been saying all along, Abreu would be very valuable to us off the bench as a guy who can get on base many different ways, and still steal bags. So what if he basically becomes the next GMJ, a really overpaid sub? If we can afford it, we should keep him.
People keep talking about Trout being blocked, but are you forgetting that he wasn’t even supposed to come up at all last season? He was originally slated to possibly be a late-season call-up THIS season, 2012. So, let him play in AAA until we see just how awful Wells is in year 2 in Anaheim.
Izzy or Callaspo should only be traded if Trumbo makes a successful transition to 3B and Morales is healthy and hitting well. But again, we should start the season with both of those guys until we see how Trumbo really does. If Morales doesn’t start as the DH on opening day, Trumbo can DH and Callaspo starts at 3B.
If we have the luxury of affording everyone who is currently on the roster, I don’t see any rush in trading any of them.
Where were you on December 8th, 2011 - Pujols Day?
