Who has impressed you this Spring?
Edited to correct inexcusable omission.
Three weeks ago, I wrote a post asking who you guys were pulling for this spring. Surprisingly, Wood seemed to lead the pack with a huge contingent of Conger supporters. Now that the season is only two weeks away, who has impressed you the most in Spring Training and what are you hoping for or expecting from them?
Here's my list:
1. Bobby Wilson -- Dude is literally playing his ass off. He's dropped 30+ pounds and is raking. I was at the game against the D-Backs when he went 5-5, and he looks quicker in all aspects of his game. I hope he continues this throughout the year for the Halos.
2. Mark Trumbo -- I knew the guy raked in AAA last year, and he's making some major noise this Spring. I hope he brings the thunder with him to the big A, because he looks like our starting first baseman for a few weeks.
2. Michael Kohn -- I figured he was a Septemeber call up who could use some seasoning in Salt Lake. However, the guy looks ready to pitch in Anaheim right now, and I will be surprised if he doesn't make the Opening Day roster.
3. Jeremy Moore -- Incredibly athletic and growing in confidence, he's a guy to keep an eye on. His development in the minors will be fun to watch and should be complete about the time Abreu and Hunter's contracts are up. He could play a big role in the roster decisions for 2012/13
Honorable mention to Takahashi and Mathis. Taka has already had a level of success which makes his Spring Training numbers not quite as exciting as the above mentioned surprises and Mathis did have the 09 playoffs.
Those are mine, what are yours?

Wait, what's that guy's name?
Tall, strapping 1B/RF, young, hits the cover off the ball . . .

Who is this Mike Trainbro everyone is talking about?
We all know this spring training is all about the “coming out” party for Jeffy Premium.
12/14/10 4:30 a.m. pst. I wake up to find out that Cliff Lee screwed over both the Yankees and Rangers. The world has truly become a better place.
Mathis is gay?

yeah, I was surprised
you only gave him an honorable mention. I quickly scanned your list and when I didn’t see Trumbo’s name I scanned it again because I was like “I must’ve missed it, it HAS to be there.”
feel free to edit your post, I won’t judge you

Shed 10 pounds, the ball is looking really good out of his hand.

Agree with top three - they have impressed.

I'd say my top 3 would be
1. Trumbo. Obvious choice; but he saw an opening and stepped up in a huge way.
2. Kendrick. Great number. But the thing I’ve noticed is the patience. If he can figure it out, we might have a legit top-of-the-lineup guy. If he stays the same, we have a solid 2nd baseman.
3. Bourjos. Hitting, fielding, walking, running. Dude might stick. We sure as hell need him to.

Trumbo looks great but let's not get ahead of ourselves.
Dude has 1 walk in 47 Ab’s with 12 K’s. Combine poor plate discipline with a lack of contact and he’ll get eaten alive by quality MLB pitching.
What about Weaver?
I know he was our Ace last year and killed it, but 17K’s and 0 walks in 13.1 innings is the shiznit. 3 years in a row now his numbers have improved, with the outfield defense we have this year, a better offense, improved bullpen and a few better performances on the road in Tex, this guy wins the Cy Young hands down. His biggest problem is pitches per batter and not going deep enough in games, but if he improves on that, 23 wins is within reach.
3rd in the league last year in K/BB ratio and 6th in K/9 prove it was no fluke. If this guy was in the NL he’d be giving Halladay a run for his money. Ok, maybe that’s taking it a little far, but close.
I'm calling it. WTY will be the AL CY winner in 2011.
God #@%^ Mother F@#$in' Reagins! You make Omar Minaya look good.

No, he's the lowest paid pitcher in our starting rotation.
Obviously he sucks.
Pollyanna is dead. But don't get mad at me, I didn't kill her. Tony Reagins did.
pretty sure pay doesn't factor in to the Cy Young ballots
The other guys get paid more based on how long they’ve been playing

And don't forget we're replacing one of the worst defensive OFs with one of the best
And he’s an extreme flyball pitcher. I think he’s the favorite for the Cy Young.

I don't care what you say about TR, but Arte is the man.
And he goes to every spring training game. How many owners actually do that? Owners like John Henry are too busy in Europe rooting for Liverpool.

Arte is the man
but sometimes its better when he just has a sly smile, instead of saying things that can possibly bite him in the ass, even if they are taken out of context.

+1
I love me some Arte, but I don’t like his “we are going to get a big bat” “make a big splash” comments that tie the hands of his front office and spoil our off-season game plans.
I love this team.
by Downing Rules on Mar 18, 2011 5:43 PM PDT up reply actions
Well, shit
The front office landed a middle of the order guy who hit 31 homeruns last year and whose SLG would lead the F out of this team.
Sure the “splash” part was the backsplash of feces from the overfull porta-potty, but it WAS a splash.
I brought sexy back, but they only gave me store credit....
And Wells is looking every bit the product of Toronto this spring.
With the career .274/.321/.446 line outside of Toronto looking almost optimistic vs his spring output thusfar.
Let's think through the question that this post was based on...
“What has impressed you this spring”
After a winter where neither could refrain from stupid comments, I have been impressed that both Arte and Reagins have been quiet this spring.
I would add Pettit and Kendrick to your list.
Scioscialist Party of America - Redistributing your defense since 2000.
Howie for sure
Small sample size aside, he has four walks against five Ks (not that low K-rates are abnormal for him), and 1 walk per eleven plate appearances. You know the power will come along (only one XBH so far) in the form of doubles, but the average and patience are VERY nice. He has 1/7th of his 2010 walk total in 1/16th the plate appearances. And the 5 for 6 on SBs is very nice, too.
Also, it’s maybe grasping at straws, but Wood has come around in the last several games at the plate. The .533 SLG is the kind of number that we always wanted when we knew he would need it to offset the BA/OBP issues. If this is the beginning of something, then I’d be more than happy to ride a hot hand in the hope he gains some momentum out of it. If he doesn’t come through, is a full month of him (or even less, really) over Callaspo really the make-or-break for our season?

Our athletic alternatives to Wells in LF: Pettit, and Moore.
Plus Bourjos’ newfound patience at the plate.
All of which proving that all we needed in LF this offseason, if we needed anything, was a one year stopgap (could’ve even been Rivera, for that matter).
Head still spinning on why we paid $81M for Wells and whiffed on $80M guaranteed for Beltre (who is already back in the Texas lineup).
And what do we need this spring? A solution at third base, and a stopgap at first. Bah.
But Bourjos, Pettit and Moore? Yeah — I like ’em.
Rivera
Hitting .394/.429/.545 in 33 ABs so far for TOR.
Sure it’s only spring ball, but still pretty exciting numbers from an LF somebody gave you for free, eh?

Napoli .344/.389/.625 in 35 PAs.
And Texas has almost nowhere to play him, with four 1Bmen competing for the privilege, and four catcher possibilities as well.
That was the justification for trading Napoli for most — we had nowhere to play him — even given the fact Morales had yet to see a single pitch.
I think its that we try to understand not justify.
We have no say in what the people in the Front office do so we dont have to justify it. Trying to understand and explain it is what we do so we dont go crazy trying to understand the crap they do.

Napoli always has a hot spring.
He does this every year. Then, the regular season comes and he completely sucks by simply being one of the best hitting catchers in the game.
