Little Splash Could Save Our Season
Like many of you, I've had my fingers crossed for a Scott Kazmir rebound season. After all, he started working out earlier this off-season, is no longer battling injuries, and has had months to clear his mind of the abortion that was his 2010 campaign. Through it all, I was cautiously optimistic, at best. However, Kaz's performance this spring has moved me from cautiously optimistic to disgusted and realistic... The dude is done. Oliver Perez 2.0, done.
Kazmir's once blazing heater is now in the 85-89 range, and the only thing keeping him from getting completely crushed is the fact he can't find the strike zone enough for hitters to tee off on him. In his four spring starts he is posting a 6.56 BB/9 to go with his 4.38 K/9. He's also allowing over a hit per inning to give him a cool 1.95 WHIP. If this guy makes 30+ starts for the Halos in 2011 there is no way they're playing in October. Add that Joel Pineiro is already dealing with an injury and the Halos could have a complete drop off after Weaver, Haren & Ervin.
I'm big on Trevor Bell, and think he could be a solid arm in the rotation in the near future, but I'm not convinced he is ready to make 30+ starts. The Halos could use another dependable arm in the rotation (and it's not Matt Palmer).
A recent article on MLBTR suggests the Twins have named Scott Baker their #5 starter and are looking to part with Kevin Slowey for a bullpen arm. If there is one position the Halos have a little depth, it's in the bullpen. There are literally 10 arms in the system that can contribute at the major league level. Given the lack of a natural fit of a trade partner for Minnesota, the Twinkies might very well part with Slowey for a Rich Thompson or a Jason Bulger. Don't hold me to that as I'm not entirely sure what Minnesota's asking price would be, but it seems feasible that it would be fairly modest for a guy who has posted ERAs in the mid to upper 4's the last couple of years (although his peripherals say he pitched much better).
How much value would Slowey bring?
The last three seasons Slowey has posted WAR of 3.0, 1.4, and 2.2. It should be noted that had he tossed about 160 innings in 2009 as he did in '08 and '10, he would have posted a 1.9 WAR. I took Bill James FIP projection for Slowey in 2011 and applied to another 160 inning season. James projects Slowey for another 2.2 WAR season. At this point, I firmly believe that is a solid 2 wins better than the season we can expect from Kazmir.
What are the financial implications?
Slowey avoided arbitration this off-season settling on a 1-year deal for $2.7MM (2.2 WAR = ~$11MM on the market). He is under team control for two more season's after 2011. Turning 27 this May, you have to think Slowey is due to improve as a major league pitcher over the next couple of seasons making him a nice candidate to step into the #4 spot upon Pineiro's departure following this season. Pineiro, by the way, posted a 2.5 WAR last season, and is set for another 2.5 WAR season in '11 according to James, so Slowey would be an equally productive, yet considerably cheaper replacement.
Summary
It seems realistic that the Halos could not only upgrade their rotation for this season, but fill the #4 spot for the next three seasons with a quality arm under team control, all at the cost of a bullpen arm or two. Don't get me wrong, I'm not suggesting we package up Walden and Jepsen for Slowey. But, if a Bulger/F-Rod type of package would get the deal done, I'd pull the trigger.

Wasnt Scott Baker
the Opening Day starter for the Twins last season? If so, that’s a serious fall in the depth dept.
Light up that dumpster!!
good idea but...
I think the Twins are looking for more than Bulger or FRod

Maybe.. maybe not
Not entirely sure on his asking price. But there doesn’t appear to be much of a market for him (according to the article) so you never know. I’d certainly be kicking the tires if I were TR is all I’m getting at.
They owe us for getting Fuentes last year for just 'the tallest guy in the world'.
Bulger, Thompson, even FRod2 are better arms and MLB ready (as they’ll ever be). Since they’ll save 2.2 million in the process as well, it makes a lot of sense.

Ok then
Give them a proven closer – Rodney!

How to judge evry trade proposal
is it worth Trout, Kendrick and Chatwood?
If not, which two? If not which one?
Them is who they are asking for.
Our trash will not yield their okay stuff.
Unless the new GM of the other team just came from your front office and is loyal to you so you can give them trash for A Gon
Then its cool.
I brought sexy back, but they only gave me store credit....
Ugh, thanks for ruining the Starbucks I just bought
I’m literally thinking about walking the dozen blocks or so from my building to Petco and pissing on the gates now that you reminded me of that trade.

You are usually very unrealistic in thinking that every trade must involve our top 5 prospects.
Slowey is worth a top 20 -30 at this point. The fact that the Twins are relegating this once promising starter to the bullpen says it all.

whoa Slowey is not worth a top prospect.

So why are the Twins shopping
a fully cost controlled 2+ WAR pitcher with good peripherals?
Guesses?

I really like this idea.
I have no idea what Gardy has against Slowey. Sure, the guy isn’t #1 starter material, but surely he’s better than Nick Blackburn.
His inability to recognize what he has is almost Napoli-esque.

I'm not so sure either
From what I can gather it’s more a personal beef than a talent deal… Maybe it all stems from when he yanked Slowey after 7 innings of no-hit ball due to a high pitch count? Slowey could have made a comment that Gardy won’t let go of. He seems like a “no BS” kinda guy. A comment from a Twins fan on the MLBTR article gives the most insight on the Gardenhire/Slowey situation that I have been able to find.. Again, it’s just a fan’s comments, but it seems like people (other Twins fans prob) tend to agree with him and liken it to the JJ Hardy deal. I guess that tradewas a result of personal beef between Hardy and management.. Anyhow, here is the quote:
“Comes down to Gardenhire not being a big fan of Slowey. So, he’s gone. Yet again, someone with some personality beyond “I’m a robot” is looked at as a clubhouse problem. I guess as long as Gardy has his Oklahoma buddy and team ace Nick Blackburn around, he’s content. After all, it’s not about winning, it’s about having fun with your buddies in the dugout, excessive amounts of grit, and battling your tail off… right Ron? "
Seriously.
Fortunately seasons aren’t won on paper. Just ask the Giants.

if only we'd had the Giants' offense (such as it was) last season
Well, come see a fat old man some time!
Unfortunately, Scott Kazmir seems to be made of paper at this point

Kazmir is done
If Kazmir is not injured, then the skills that made some consider him a good pitcher are gone. I believe Brandon Wood has a better chance of a .900+ OPS than Kazmir has of keeping his ERA below 5.00 throughout a season.
Mike Butcher is a better pitcher today than Scott Kazmir. Furthermore, the only reason Kazmir is still on the roster and not DFA’s is a) he’s owned $12m this season, and b) the ridiculous haul of players Reagins gave away. To dump Kazmir would be a public admission that Reagins screwed the pooch again.
Palmer is a AAAA guy. If not Trevor Bell in the 5 slot, then give Thompson a chance. He can’t possibly be worse than Kazmir, and the kid deserves the chance to stick on the MLB roster.
I say kick the tires at the very least
Why not offer Rodney (while covering the difference in salary) and stick Kaz-with-a-fork-in ’em in the pen. Yes, it makes the team more expensive. But they are going to live or die through that rotation and at the moment are one injury away from a whole lot of trouble.
If the Twins are too smart to take Rodney I would be OK with any other reliever going for Slowey (drawing a line at Walden, of course).
Rodney and Jepsen with Kazmir going to the pen
Let’s try that.

I would love dumping Rodney and getting a useful pitcher in return
But, Rodney is pretty much the complete opposite of what the Twins tend to want from their pitchers
Im not opposed
This team is one starting pitching injury away from a horrible season. The farm system has produced nothing other than mediocre bullpen arms with control issues and slap hitting ______s in the last four years or so.
I have no faith in this organization to do pretty much anything at this point other than pull of a lopsided trade (which they have proven they can do, both ways, with Tex, Haren and Wells)
So do that.
I brought sexy back, but they only gave me store credit....
"Slap-hitting melvins?"
Is that the answer to the fill-in-the-blank?

I am down to go to HappyFun Town at the next HH meetup (so long as it is not May 7th-14th)
I will be in Michigan, Wisconsin and maybe Chicago in that timeframe. So long as it is not then, I am down. We can meet up way early and get bombed.

I like the idea
but I cannot imagine the FO getting it right and not screwing yet another pooch. TR will give up too much and increase payroll . . . somehow.

Trevor Bell
BigGame48, didn’t you triple off this guy? We can’t be having him in our rotation when a chop like you can get hits off him. :)
