Hank Conger Surprise Angels Roster Addition

Welcome to Opening Day, Hank.

Eric Kay in the Angels Communication Department just sent me the list of the Opening Day 25-Man roster for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. The big surprise is King Conger in Anaheim.

Star-divide

PITCHERS (11)
Jason Bulger (RHP)
Dan Haren (RHP)
Kevin Jepsen (RHP)
Scott Kazmir (LHP)
Michael Kohn (RHP)
Fernando Rodney (RHP)
Ervin Santana (RHP)
Hisanori Takahashi (LHP)
Rich Thompson (RHP)
Jordan Walden (RHP)
Jered Weaver (RHP)

CATCHERS (3)
Hank Conger
Jeff Mathis
Bobby Wilson

INFIELDERS (6)
Erick Aybar
Alberto Callaspo
Maicer Izturis
Howie Kendrick
Mark Trumbo
Brandon Wood

OUTFIELDERS (5)
Bobby Abreu
Peter Bourjos
Torii Hunter
Chris Pettit
Vernon Wells

DISABLED LIST
Joel Pineiro (RHP)
Bobby Cassevah (RHP)
Scott Downs (LHP)
Reggie Willits (OF)
Kendrys Morales (INF)
Freddy Sandoval (INF)

  • Pineiro has a tight right shoulder
  • Cassevah has an inflamed pitching shoulder
  • Scott Downs fractured his left big toe (or should that be his bog left toe, or would that imply that he only has one toe on his left side and it is oversized?)
  • Kendry(s) is listed as still recovering from ankle surgery and having a "left big toe soreness" (Cue Tony Bennett: "I Left My ...Toe ... in some big soreness").
  • Willits has a calf strain and Sandoval an oblique strain.

Andrew Romine, Frankie 2-Rod, Trevor Bell and Matt Palmer got optioned to AAA Salt Lake.

DL time made this pretty easy for the team.

It gets a little more interesting once Pineiro, Downs, Willits and Morales get back.

when Morales comes back

we will still need Trumbo at 1B because Morales will be DHing

i think when Morales comes back Pettit goes down and Abreu can fill in at the corners if needed

just hope that our front office can look at the facts and see that

Pettit should be our 4th outfielder. and Willits should not wear a major league uniform again. (as much as I like Reggie.)

And I think that the reliever situation just depends on who looks solid until Downs gets back.
If Bulger gets raked or Thompson struggles, then one of those guys would be on the outs instead of Kohn or Walden.

I would agree that, given the organization’s history with decision making, your guesses are the most likely.

Sacrificing Kohn for Bulger weakens the pen.

And sacrificing Pettit and Trumbo for Willits and Wood weakens the bench.

I don’t put it past Scioscia to weaken the offense for the sake of retaining personalities, but he’s going to have to be a manager and make the tough decisions at some point. He’s coasting now.

by Turks Teeth on Mar 30, 2011 8:46 AM PDT up reply actions   1 recs

Not sure if it's so much personalities

as it is service time considerations.

Unless they’re sure Bulger is toast, is it wise to let another team claim him so Kohn can be the 7th man in the pen?

Would keeping Trumbo on the pine once Morales returns hurt his development more than it would strengthen the bench?

Would the team be better off having Petit playing every day in SLC to be ready when one of the old dudes in the outfield gets hurt?

The only one that pisses me off is Conger. Putting him ahead of Mathis and Wilson seems to be the easiest way to inject more offense into this line-up, specifically the pathetic bottom half. Of course the season will be 2/3 done before Scioscia even considers making that switch, if at all.

by dmhead on Mar 30, 2011 10:20 AM PDT up reply actions

Given it was Scioscia doling out the service time, chicken meets egg...

…but the problem is ours.

You try to build the best team possible. Bulger is not the best among available parts. He isn’t a Darren-O’Day-who-got-away type, a guy with promising peripherals who got a little unlucky while he was on our roster with injury and balls in play. He’s a middling reliever with control problems, and if another team wants to take that problem on, why should we care?

On Trumbo, the only thing he needs to see now is Major League pitching. He’s not going to “develop” any more at age 26 in AAA parks that inflate his numbers and don’t present him with representative challenges.

Pettit’s one problem is injury, so playing him every day is a mixed bag — and he’s shown some capacity for playing off the bench. Reggie has shown the exact opposite — he only plays well when playing every day.

On Conger — I’d actually rather him play every day. Of all the prospects we saw this spring, he seemed the most half-baked. I don’t mean that in a negative way — I just mean he needs continual play and work behind the dish. I think he is wasted on the bench.

by Turks Teeth on Mar 30, 2011 11:56 AM PDT up reply actions

I admit to not watching much spring training this year

so I’ll take your word on Conger being “half-baked”. My intention wasn’t to have him on the bench, however. Ideally Mathis/Wilson would back him up while he learns on the fly. He couldn’t possibly do any worse than those two, right? Of course we all know that point is moot and if he is indeed only going to sit on the bench most of the time, I’ll be happy to see him in Salt Lake getting his reps.

About Trumbo, if he still sees action 3-4 games a week once Morales returns, fine. If it’s for a Quinlan role, however, i’d rather Wood rot on the bench while Trumbo stays fresh by playing every day in AAA. Wood represents the 25th spot on the roster, meaning break glass in case of an emergency. Trumbo can be back with the team the next day if an extended opportunity to play presents itself.

Good points on Pettit and Bulger.

by dmhead on Mar 30, 2011 12:23 PM PDT up reply actions

Who does everyone thinks gets sent down once people are activated from the DL?

My first guess is Conger for Pineiro.
Then Bulger gets DFA’d for Downs. Doesn’t clear waivers.
Then Wood DFA’d after a terrible April for Morales. Doesn’t clear waivers.
And Willits clears waivers to stay in AAA at some point in between.

Agree on Conger for Pineiro.

Probably right on Bulger for Downs and Wood for Morales.

I think Pettit might go down for Willits though

by ~MMP~ on Mar 29, 2011 10:54 PM PDT up reply actions

f-y-i

Bulger and Wood are out of options.

by Rev Halofan on Mar 29, 2011 10:54 PM PDT up reply actions

When Pineiro and Downs come back we will see at least one pitcher RFA’d and idk that they clear waivers or sent down. and id guess Conger sent down to clear room for the second spot.

After that they will need to decide between Willits and Pettit. Id like rev. if you have one a link about Pettit having options left cause I thought last season we figured out that he didn’t anymore just like WIlson and Evans didn’t.

With the return of Morales I think its a little stickier. I think part of what happens is dependent on the play of Wood. If he is giving a good showing up to Morales’s return then Trumbo gets sent down if not then im not so sure they don’t cut Wood and keep Trumbo. This seems to make sense to me but maybe im just wrong.

(rev. ill send you an email shortly)

Conger comes in late in games where we have the lead as a pinch hitter to get some at bats against major league pitching.

by Darth Duane on Mar 29, 2011 10:57 PM PDT up reply actions

Seems odd to bring him up for 2 weeks

just to send him down again. What are the chances that he’s been given a chance to win the #2 job behind Mathis? Maybe they keep 3 catchers?

You are what you type.

by rjcicc on Mar 29, 2011 11:02 PM PDT up reply actions

Scioscia said Conger would be in AAA unless he won the starting catcher job, which it doesn't seem like he did.

I’m guessing the fact that Salt Lake’s season starts a little later than the Angels’ season was part of this. Conger can get a little MLB time, without missing any everyday play/development time in AAA.

by ~MMP~ on Mar 29, 2011 11:04 PM PDT up reply actions

Conger may not have won the starting gig

But he’s not that far away. If Mathis has no offense, I won’t be surprised to see Conger up later in the year to gain more MLB experience and win the job outright. His bat is ready, Sosh just wants his defense fine tuned, and he’ll get that in Salt Lake.

Bullpen

I’m kinda surprised that they are carrying three catchers and only eleven pitchers to start the year. I know there are a couple of off days, but starters aren’t ready to go deep into ballgames at this point. I was sure Matt Palmer would be in the bullpen mix, especially considering that Kazmir will be starting on Sunday. They’re going to go deep into the bullpen.

by jjackflash on Mar 29, 2011 11:12 PM PDT reply actions

the starters

can go 100 pitches right now if they are pitching good

you wont see them throw 110+ pitches though (most likely)

I think Palmer and Bell were thinking what we were thinking

Managers love to catch young guys thinking that way…You have to feel for them basically being told the #5 job was never really open for competition. The game I went and saw Bell he was lights out solid.

7 man bullpen

If you’re a major league team and can’t make it with a 7 man bullpen, then you’re doing something very wrong.

by jco on Mar 30, 2011 6:52 AM PDT up reply actions

I thought Palmer would make the team as well.

As a buffer against Kazmir.

He’s looked great his last two outings. Why not ride that?

by Turks Teeth on Mar 30, 2011 8:49 AM PDT up reply actions

I think that Scioscia is going to ride Kazmir for 2 - 3 starts...

getting Bell and Palmer down to AAA allows then to stretch out their pitch counts and get regular time … prepping them for eventual slotting into the rotation when Kaz blows up.

I love this team.

by Downing Rules on Mar 30, 2011 9:44 AM PDT up reply actions

I'm just thinking

Let’s assume that Kazmir has thrown 100 pitches by the 4th inning on Sunday (or is otherwise just stinking up the joint), and because of limited pitch counts on the other guys, the Soth has already used everyone in the bullpen at some point in the first three games of the season. It would be nice to have Palmer around to give you two or three innings at that point.

by jjackflash on Mar 30, 2011 10:42 AM PDT up reply actions

That's a situation hardly unique to this team

It’s not like we see complete games thrown all the time. The pen is going to get used every game and some guys will have to work two days in a row. If it’s a worst-case scenario (Kaz gets pummeled and removed by the 2nd inning) and the pen gets stretched, they can always call up reinforcements in time for the next game.

by dmhead on Mar 30, 2011 10:59 AM PDT up reply actions

That's my take.

It’d be easy to send Conger to AAA and keep Palmer up so as not to overwork our pen at the beginning of the season, like we did last season — to terrible results.

by Turks Teeth on Mar 30, 2011 11:59 AM PDT up reply actions

Surprised that Bell and Palmer got sent down

But they’ll be back soon. Someone will have to pick up the pieces after Kazmir detonates.

by Suboptimal on Mar 30, 2011 12:28 AM PDT reply actions

Adding Bulger to the roster and optioning Palmer is ridiculous.

Bulger has not performed well, but then again Scioscia has a way of hoping against hope for certain players (think Mathis).

A wise man does not need advice and a fool won't take it.

by angelslogic on Mar 30, 2011 8:57 AM PDT up reply actions

Agree on the Bulger side of your argument...

but I really think that Soth is sending Palmy down to AAA to get him stretched out with guaranteed work for eventual Kaz replacement.

I love this team.

by Downing Rules on Mar 30, 2011 9:45 AM PDT up reply actions

I hope Kohn stays

I just like the young guns we have i the pen. This bullpen can be very strong after watching Kohn and Walden last night. Add Jepsen to that and we’ve got three young flame throwers. I am very escited about that.

Also, I sure hope Willits just goes on the 60 day DL and then gets released….just personal opinion. Petit brings everything that Willits does PLUS power. To me it is a no brainer.

Bring on the OREO Line!

by angelskid2210 on Mar 30, 2011 8:27 AM PDT reply actions

Agreed.

The young core of Kohn, Thompson and Walden looks like it can be very good. You pair that with Takahashi and Downs, and we have the makings of one or the Angels’ traditionally great bullpens.

Imagine the day with Rodney is gone, and the most unstable arm in the pen is Kevin Jepsen. That would be a pen any team would be happy to have.

by Turks Teeth on Mar 30, 2011 8:53 AM PDT up reply actions

Good point

I agree keeping Bulger on the roster at the expense of Kohn just because he is out of options weakens the pen.

by LAA of A Fan on Mar 30, 2011 9:26 AM PDT up reply actions

It'll be interesting to see what happens to Trumbo when Morales comes back

We know K-Mo won’t be able to start full time at 1B which means there are starts at first available. Initially I thought most of those would go to Trumbo. But now I’m getting more of a sense that Soth will send Trumbo back to AAA and give those starts to Howie and Bobby Wilson, especially if Trumbo struggles to hit out of the gate. That gives the club more time to evaluate Wood, which I think they want to do before they completely cut ties with him.

by Bolt Deck on Mar 30, 2011 9:06 AM PDT reply actions

If he doesn't learn to lay off the slider off the plate

he will be back in SLC quickly. He looked real bad twice in the last two games. I doubt the other team’s scouts missed that.

On the other hand I have my fingers crossed that he got the message…

by Unclearnie on Mar 30, 2011 10:27 AM PDT up reply actions

This team seems to have found more of its "ness"

I’ve only caught the last few games, but the team seems much more focused than it was at this time last year. Perhaps there was something to the theory that the departure of Vlad, Lackey, Figgins, et al left some sort of void that couldn’t be measured statistically. The combination of some young guys who lead on the field (Bourjos, Walden, etc) with established veterans and clubhouse leaders like Torii and Abreu is looking like it’s affected the team in a positive way. I’m really looking forward to us smash from tomorrow to October (hopefully).

I agree too

I think the sting of playing horrible last year and missing on the playoffs may have refocused our team, as well as the hunger and energy from the young guys on the roster now. I’m excited to see what will happen, and if our offense steps up, we’ll have a Red October once again!!

I think the idea is that we have an off-day after the first 4 games, so Kaz is slotted in JP's spot for game 4.

Then the rotation starts over with WTY in game 5, and JP takes his normal spot after that.

Then that is really messed up

If they are keeping Conger on the bench for a week until Pineiro is back, then that wastes a year of Conger’s eligibility. If Conger is here, they better play him.

A club with a real front office would wait until May 1st to bring him up, just to protect themselves from Hank’s being arbitration eligible a year early. But nothing surprises me with us hemorrhaging young talent year after year by mis-managing our 40 man roster.

Good question

I don’t think Soth is going to go with a “long reliever,” as such. There isn’t one until Palmer and Bell get called up. I think we’re looking at a lot of one inning relief action.Example:
Kaz: Innings 1-4 (out after giving up 5 runs and 100 pitches)
Bulger Inning 5
Jepsen: Inning 6
Walden: Inning 7
Hawk: Inning 8
Rodney: Inning 9

something like that
