HAHAHAHA

Right?
The guy has a few million in his pocket for being the worst position player in the game over the last 6 years. He should sit down and know his role. Although the way Sosh has led him on all this time I guess I can’t blame the guy for being delusional.

Looks like Mathis is seeing the writing on the wall..

What kills me is,
How does Mathis actually think he deserves more playing time?
Can’t hit or field & he goes to the coach? Haha wow.

Why does Conger keep getting referred to as the third catcher?
He and Mathis have started six games a piece, while Wilson has started twice. Seems pretty obvious to me which guy is around for depth and nothing else.
It doesnt really matter
but maybe because both Mathis and Wilson were in the big leagues the whole season last year

Yes his spring "traiing" was great

He should get more time than Premium as well

no that’s funny…this whole Mathis ting is just sad. I would expect to be upset. If he wasnt he should be kicked off the team for not being competitive. But if he was surprised, then the boy not only as no talent, he’s not that bright.
Well, come see a fat old man some time!

Mathis sucks
but he is an Angel so I always cheer him on. I could live with the fact that his offense is the worst and his defense is slightly below average at best. What I can’t tolerate is a guy who bitches to his coach about playing time. You’re a team player and you listen to your coach. Did Torii throw a fit after he gave up centerfield? Do Izturis or Aybar or Callaspo throw a fit over who’s starting at short or 3rd? No. And they’re all a lot more valuable than Jeff.
Give me a break, Mathis. You’re a team player on a team with 3 catchers. Shut the hell up, thank God that a team is paying you (most of us have to work overtime to make ends meet and would have been out of work long ago if we sucks at our job as hard as you do) and be a team player. There are more people than you on a 25 man roster.

“We’re looking for solutions to what was really rough offensive year for us last year.”
Mathis’ batting average over the last six seasons is about .190. It’s not going to get any better this season. Scioscia sees something in Conger (that he never saw in Napoli). I hope its real and I look forward to Hank proving he is the right man for the job.
A wise man does not need advice and a fool won't take it.
I still dream of that Conger/Napoli catching platoon.
Especially given that Conger is actually starting to look like a plus defender back there.

When Jeff Mathis was getting the start every day. He got slammed for being a me-first player who wouldn’t trust his coach and do what was best for the team. My guess is that Lyle paints Mathis as a “fierce competitor,” who “wants to do everything he can to help his teammates” and “can’t sit still when there is a job to be done.”

In His Defense
The team gave him a raise for this year. They could have non-tendered him and brought him to camp on a minor league deal (does anyone actually believe that another team would have given him a guaranteed major league deal?), and paid him the major league minimum if he made the team. So, I could see why he could be confused initially.
This, of course, speaks to one aspect of Reagins’ failings (but that’s another thread) and misallocation of resources.
Fun Fact
As of this writing, Jeff Mathis this year has more plate appearances (27) than Mike Napoli (23).
Must be because of Napoli’s slow start (.333/.478/.833) .
must be
another fun fact: Nap gets more chicks them mathis has dreams

Many things about Scoscia are confusing.
He may not react to offensive failure as may would and may even ignore mistakes. But one thing’s for sure: he is loyal to a fault. I can’t imagine he has a positive reaction to Mathis’ show of disrespect to his team and teammates. Batting .190 won’t get you cut, but this?
Talk about a shitty baseball existence. Read the lineup card in the morning, give the coach a piece of your mind, your demand for playing time goes public, and the kid taking your place hits a 3-run bomb and guns down the leagues active steals leader. Ouch.

I take it that Hank isn't out on Michigan Ave right now with Premium.
Premium returns to his hotel room and falls face first onto his plush, queen sized bed. After a few heaving sobs, he rises up on his elbows to wipe away a tear, and looks longingly at the empty bed next to him. Rolling over onto his back, Premium reaches for his iPhone and speed-dials a number.
(phone rings, then goes to voicemail)
“Whaddup, you’ve reached the Napster’s cell phone. I’m obviously not available right now as I’m either hooking up with some Texas tail or crushing dingers. Leave me a message and I’ll call you back when I damn well please.”
(Beep)
“Mike, this is Jeff. Sosh was mean to me today. All I did was ask why that new guy was getting to play more than me. I try my best, but nothing ever seems to work. I miss you, man. Why don’t you call more? Peace.”
Premium dejectedly tosses the phone to the other side of the bed. He thinks of all the good times he had with Mike over the years; hitting the town in exotic locales like Cleveland and Milwaukee, growing sideburns, pillowfights. Premium suppresses a smile thinking about the time Mike’s mom made chicken breasts back home in Florida.
“Things are going to be better tomorrow”, he says to himself. “Mike will call and Sosh will play me. There’s no way that Conger kid can keep this up”.
He gets up from the bed and catches a glimpse of himself in the mirror. Walking closer, he begins to repeat the mantra that Sosh taught him so many years ago…“Be Premium, be Premium, be Premium…I AM PREMIUM!”, he exclaims jubilantly.
Falling back on his bed, Premium quickly falls asleep knowing that it will all be ok and that he’ll be starting tomorrow.
Fin.

I am absolutely shocked (and amped) over Soth this year
First Rodney, now POSSIBLY Mathis!? Obviously things that should have done last season, and moves I thought would never come, he has thrown me for a loop this season in some aspects.
by Dontbatvlad4th on Apr 16, 2011 10:30 PM PDT reply actions
Is the Soth approach working?
Everyone was screaming for both Rodney and Mathis to be sent to Siberia.
What did Soth do? He gave full faith in both Rodney and Mathis and gave them both a complete opportunity. He let them fail in their opportunities and their replacements EARN the opportunity to through good service and production. Walden is IN. Conger appears to be IN.
I didn’t get it at first but it appears to be working. And not only is Walden IN, Rodney has pitched much better now that the pressure is off him to be closer. Maybe we’ll get similar results from Mathis. Congers becomes the full time catcher, and Mathis improves as a backup? Hmmm.
Rodney still pitching in pressure
Just in the 8th. I think it’s more to do with fixing the mechanics than not pitching in the 9th.

he’s part of a team that has had its best start in over 15 years
Conger can’t catch every day and my personal assumption that he’s a better tandem than Wilson is with Conger, at least with MLB experience.
granted he’s over paid and his .200 would be a lot tougher to stomach if we weren’t winning and Conger wasn’t dealin’.

RIP Coach Wooden (1910-2010).
You know who this makes look good? Wood and Wilson.
As much as we hate on Wood, he’s honest with himself and how crappy he’s played. He’s admitted it in so many words with the press and has yet to complain about playing time.
Same with Wilson. His quote was classy and honest:
“Nobody wants to sit on the bench,” said Wilson, who is out of options, meaning the Angels risk losing him on waivers if they try to send him to the minors. “If you’re happy or content just sitting on the bench, there’s something wrong with you. [But] it’s never ever going to be about ‘oh I hope this guy fails so I can get a chance to succeed.’ It’s about winning. We’re here to win.”

Wait a Red Hot minute! You mean Jeff “# 2 Catching prospect behind Joe Mauer” Mathis and his .192 batting average don’t get the fact that he’s worn out his welcome?
That Scoscia cleared out slugger Mike Napoli to make sure his “pet project” wouldn’t be looking over his shoulder?
But even with that perceived “lack of pressure”, Mathis still can’t water if he fell out of a friggin’ boat?
Memo to “Rock Star – I want to look like Tom Brady – that’s why I have long hair popping out of my ear flap” Jeffy, you were handed the job when the team dumped Bengie…you couldn’t hit then…so they switched you and Nap…and for some reason kept coming back to you…giving you at bats….watching you K or DP….watching you sail throws to the CF instead of the bag….and you wonder?

I'm kind of sad at some of these comments
I know Mathis is bad. And I know he’s overpaid. But would you want anyone on the team who was satisfied sitting the bench when his (presumed) role is that of a starter?
I don’t think he should be publicly griping about playing time, but I have nothing wrong with him being upset. I would be too if my boss took me off an important project for someone else. There are very few people who are simply happy collecting a paycheck. Most people also get job satisfaction from having responsibility and succeeding.
Maybe I just feel like playing devil’s advocate. I think the bench is the right place for him. But how many people would be happy in his situation?
Defending maligned chants since 2009
Nice perspective
I would not be happy riding pine. I would hope Mathis is not happy riding pine. I would also hope Mathis does something about it to make himself a better player.
Plus we don’t know how the griping became public. I would doubt that Mathis would put it out in public. He has respect for Soth and he knows the public doesn’t like him a whole lot.
Let me see....

While I can understand...
Mathis wanting to play more. I also funny expect to see him sitting in the dugout cheering on the team especially Conger. I didn’t see him once yesterday – of course I might have missed it but really… this is a team no I or ME in team.
A suggestion for Mathis… fielding practice – throwing to 2nd and not centerfield. I can take a little bit of trouble batting but when it’s both offense and defense that there are issues… well then you might sit. I’d be surprised if he doesn’t play today.
