Mark Trumbo Powers Angels, Matt Palmer Smothers Rangers
Pitcher Matt Palmer started the season in Triple A Salt Lake. Save for a pin in the ankle of Kendry(s) Morales, 1B Mark Trumbo was a depth chart afterthought. Tonight the two combined to keep more Texas Rangers merchandise on the Ballpark Team Store Shelf of Arlington, as a weak midweek crowd hurried on out of the stadium in time to catch some 8:00 PM (local time) Dallas Cowboy draft strategy public access programming.
The Arlington grounds crew covered the field before the game, holding off the Angels from scheduled batting practice when a cloudburst hit an hour prior to Tuesday night's game. The Rangers pitching staff bore the brunt of the Halo bats working out the kinks and rust. While the Los Angeles #2,3 and 4 batters of Anaheim went 3 for 19 with 1 BB, the bottom four of the Angels batting order went 11 for 16, 2 HR, 10 RBI and 11 Runs
Trumbo drove in Alberto Callaspo with a single, a double and added cashed himself in along with AC when he launched a monster bomb off of Rangers starter Colby Lewis, who couldn't find the strike zone with a GPS most of the night. Callaspo was 2 for 3 with two walks, scoring every time he reached base. Maicer Izturis and Peter Bourjos also homered in the laugher, Izturis came when scoring actually mattered.
Bourjos had what looked like an inside-the-parker called a hit and an error when one of the Texas many minor-league quality outfielders ganked a slow roller. He made up for it with a bomb later on. Hank Conger had a hit from the left side and the right side in his 7th start behind the dish - framing Palmer pitches is not the easiest thing and you just know Alice Mathis is not going to get to many more chances with the dish framing artistry of King Conger.
7th on the Angels depth chart behind the starting five and rookie callup Tyler Chatwood, Old Man Palmer turned in the best pitching performance by an Angels starter not named Jered Weaver and Dan Haren. The final score in the game was 15-4 and frankly it wasn't really even THAT close.
The Angels and Rangers play Wednesday tied in first place at 11-6 each. You can bet that the hosts will be rolling out the batting practice red carpet beforehand.

If nothing else, a change of scenery could be good for him.
Killer game for the young guys.
Trumbo is a nice surprise. I was worried he would primarily be a Salt Lake wonder, but he’s off to a promising start.
Bourjos is living up to expectations.
Hopefully...
…I doesn’t land in Seattle. That would not be a fresh start the way that team has been going these last 10 years.
They went downhill right when the Angels golden age began.

And I’d say the same about Mathis. I don’t think anyone can say that these guys failed because they didn’t give enough effort. And it’s a harsh reality when you’ve been the best at something all your life and all of a sudden you can’t hack it any more.
And this is especially true for Wood who never got past that entry level contract to set himself up. I hope he puts it together and sticks around for someone.

I'd like to see Conger play against all righthanders, and Mathis against lefties.
That would be a nice start.
I've got nothing.
I voted for Palmer
one run in 6 innings in that place is a joke as Vernon would say.
Vernon Well's Current Average = .159 Current # of outs = Don't ask him
TY Tony!
well in that case
lets give it to B Wood for his fielding of a ball and making an out hehe
Vernon Well's Current Average = .159 Current # of outs = Don't ask him
TY Tony!
They tried it in winter ball
And he failed pretty badly. Plus, Callaspo’s been very solid himself so far this season.
So now that Wood is gone, what is the highest-priority DRAMA thread?
I’m guessing for the rest of the season, it will be “Mathis vs. ___________ (insert random catcher name here)”.
Although lately it he has lessened the anger, but it might be a close tie by the ASG with “Wells can lick my moaky, vinegary, smells like feta cheese manjewels” threads as well.
With Wells batting the way he has lately, it looks like the complaints about him have a good chance of dissipating.
Torii Hunter, on the other hand, needs to break out of this funk ASAP.
Yeah but Torii has more than delivered in the past...
…maybe not to what the full extent of his contract will be vs. his total production but I have no complaints about him struggling right now.

Mathis/conger to get DFA'd eventually
who else would you cut? Trumbo off the bench/DH would be amazing. Conger as starting catcher with Mathis/Wilson as backup. Willits as 4th OF. Aybar/Izzy/Howie/Callaspo for the 3 IF spots. that’s depth!

Pineiro will send Chatwood or Palmer back down to the minors
Most likely Chatwood. Trumbo will stay up to spell Kendrys at 1B, so they’ll have to make a decision with one of the catchers I think. It pointless to keep 3 catchers when one is never getting used. It seems like it’ll be between Wilson and Mathis, but based on playing time so far, probably Wilson. I’m not sure if he’s out of options or not though.
Hoping for this. Let him work it out where it won't hurt us.

So how does the lineup look like tomorrow with Aybar playing SS?
1B – Trumbo
2B – Kendrick
SS – Aybar
3B – Callaspo
LF – Wells
CF – PBJ
RF – Abreu
DH – Izzy
doubt they sit Pete after his monstrous game today. Doubt they sit Mighty Maicer, but i think he gets the DH role to keep his bat in the lineup and give him some kind of rest. I think they give Torii the day off since he’s been struggling and hasn’t gotten a day off lately. What do you think?
I'd rather have Torii in right.
If only so Abreu gets a few fewer PAs towards his vesting option.
Looking forward to the return of Kendrys in part for the same reason. And also in part for the obvious Cuban Missile reasons.
Barring an injury
That option is going to vest. And the Angels need to put their best team on the field. I’m fine with resting Abreu against tough lefties. But if not, it seems indefensible to sit him. Out of the four-man outfield rotation, he’s arguably the best hitter.

Their review of this game was all about the old lady in the left field bleachers that tried to throw Fleet Pete’s homer back.
I hate ESPN!!!
Well that's an effin surpise.

Well, that was a pretty funny moment.
And it summed up the game rather well… Speedy slap hitter blasts homer for the Angels, Rangers fan embarrasses self and team.
Still would have been cool to see the inside-the-park error for the same reason, plus a Trum-bomb for good measure.
Those idiots she was sitting with talked her into throwing it back;
someone else here said she wanted to keep the ball.
THIS… IS… ANAHEIM!!
You could see it on her face
She was bummed when people told her to throw it back. I don’t care where I am – even Wrigley Field bleachers. If I catch a homerun ball, I’m keeping it (to give to my kids…maybe).

I felt like he had the biggest impact on the game while it was still in question.
But Bourjos is just so much fun to watch when he’s putting the ball in play!
Gotta vote Trumbo
He is proving serious potential. If he can have Napoli’s power with a better average. Nice.
I am not a fan of your center fielder

We liked yours tonight
But not so much that one on the DL.

It sucks yours is hurt
But I’m not sad we didn’t have to face him.
a quote from yesterday....
That was a clearly superior team we played against tonight.
And it wasn’t even close.
The Halos are two amazin’ aces and three top of the order guys, with a streaky bullpen – and not a lot else.
We just finished playing some relatively shitty teams. The real test is teams like NYY and TEX. If can’t take it to ‘em, we’ll be back to .500 soon enough.
Ahhh... Yes... Finally back home in SoCal!!!

Yeah, I was gonna ask Turk
One one team clearly superior to the other tonight? And was it even close?
and i love that it was the bottom 3...
Trumbo Conger and P-Bo + Palmer

The Youth movement strikes!!!
Add Chatwood and Walden—but wait—there’s more!
And Wells now getting it in gear. Lookin good
certainly a lot better than yesterday…
But in fairness
We looked like drek last night and bombers tonight. The rubber match is going to be interesting with Weaver and ace from them. Right now we have a better record than the Yanks, took the Cleveland series, and really turned it around tonight. If we can take this series tomorrow, we’ll be able to say that we have a shot of putting together a decent season.
Right now this team doesn’t feel lucky, it feels good. Meaning we’re doing things the right way, gelling as a team, and learning. There are areas that need some improvement — heart of the lineup — but that stuff will come.

Red Sux still the suckiest team

Victor Rojas
I really like this guy.
I didn’t make it home until about the 6th inning, but when I tuned in he was in the middle of making an interesting comment and offering up perspective on Palmer’s success against the Rangers. He pointed out that, compared to first-pitch-swinging Toronto (which rocked Palmer), Texas has a much more patient lineup. This allows Palmer to get ahead in the count with a couple of hittable pitches before trying to get guys to chase something out of the zone. The Blue Jays jumped on him early, whereas the Rangers allowed him to get comfortable.
I’m paraphrasing, of course, but that was the gist of it. I thought it was an interesting observation, and it contributed to my enjoyment of the game. It made me bemoan the fact that he’s paired with such a clown in Gubicza. Put Tim Salmon in the booth with him already.
22,450 was the announced attendance in Arlington . . . they just went to the World Series!! My goodness the fans in Texas are bad. The lowest Angel attendance figure so far this season was around 32,000 (which is uncharacteristically low for the Angels) and they had a losing record last year.

AND
they had $5. tickets last night too. Are you kidding me… FIVE dollars – that is just crazy.
Cautious yet very optimistic about the 2011 Season. Go Angels.
I had to vote for Rosie
Trumbo and Bourjos were awesome, but Palmer managed to keep a lid on it for his entire six innings while the offense got going. Palmer is a sixth spot guy, and to keep that offense in check, even without Hamilton, at that stadium – that’s awesome.
R.I.P. Nick Adenhart - Always an Angel
At least the Rangers and Halos records match their Pythag records
Because, you know, we’re all so worried about that. At least this one huge game can shut up all those Ranger fans.
btw – anybody who says we haven’t played anybody yet hasn’t looked at the standings. Angels currently have the #1 strength of schedule in the AL.

Pregame picks...
from what I can see… any points won were on what texas did not on what we did. But who would have thought we’d have a game like that one.
I’m still smiling from the Bourjos “little league HR”.
