How Awesome Are the Throwback Unis?
All of the old farts here at HH remember the uniforms the Angels are sporting on Friday nights this season. For some reason, seeing those jerseys tonight gave me a warm feeling, a comfortable feeling, like I was being transported to my youth when Rod Carew & Co. were on the field.
Obviously, younger folks don't have that same emotional connection to these unis like the old farts. But I wanted to ask the question to the younger HH-ers: What do you think of these throwback unis? Are the old farts just reaching back with rose-colored glasses when we see these? Or are they kinda cool in that old-school way?
So with respect to my man Cupie and his great "cool or lame?" game invention, I ask you folks, "Are the throwback jerseys cool or lame?" The rules are you can only choose "cool" or "lame". That's it.
This Fan-Post is authored by an independent fan. Tell us what you think and how you feel.

I think
the only thing that is even close to being as cool as YWC & Cupie is the throwback uniforms!!!
I suck up enough?? I miss you guys!
I'm an Angels fan
Lame, no emotional connection... Though I completely understand
When I’m older, todays uni’s will be a sight for sore eyes.

Thee jerseys look cool on the players, but lame because of this losing record.
"It's our money," owner Arte Moreno said.
I wore one of those jersey tees just about every day when I was in elementary school
Compared to other 80s trends, I think they’ve held up pretty well in terms of style and elegance. I actually miss the blue-red trim.
I hate to be the dork that points this out...
But Carew never wore the uni they wore tonight. The ones from tonight are the button down version from the late 80s/early 90s, with a “thicker” halo on the cap. The ones Carew donned were v-neck pullovers with the elastic waist-bands and a “thin” halo on the cap.
Just sayin’…

actually you are half right
The shirt with the California patch oon the sleeve, which was worn tonight, was abandoned in 1987 so what you have is a first-half 80s jersey and a second-half 80s cap.
by Rev Halofan on Apr 23, 2011 12:22 AM PDT up reply actions
But...
The jerseys that had the patch you refer to were still v-necks without buttons and pants without belts. Tonight they wore the button downs with the belts.
well then tonight's game doesn't count
they were out of uniform.

No emotional connection to them - was born in 1994, first memories of baseball are the Disney periwinkle ones
But I am in love with these throwbacks. They look beautiful.
+1 i was born in 91 i remember the ones before the Disney ones slightly(i had a batting helmet as a kid of those)
but yeah overall those disney ones were the ones that basically took my first memories of baseball too….they should bring out those ugly ass disney ones too haha just for child hood memories
Don’t know, don’t care. People that criticize can kiss my ass. I don’t give a shit

The best throwbacks
Don’t know if they’re wearing them this season, but the ones from the early Salmon era, with the CA caps. Those were the best unis this franchise ever sported, and then Disney threw them out because they weren’t cartoonish enough.

"It’s a good opportunity to show we have the strength to respond" - Arsene Wenger, 2011
I agree with this on the throwbacks...
…however, my favorite uni’s are the ones they still wear occasionally. The sleeveless white with the red undershirt!
Kazmir, 9-15 with a 5.94 ERA for the Angels in 2010, made his fifth Cactus League start and admitted this outing was discouraging.
Those were my favorite unis too.
I never could understand why we gave up those uniforms for the periwinkle crap.
YOU DON'T KNOW THE POWER OF THE DARKSIDE.....
I like the throwbacks
I don’t like wearing uni’s we wore in 86 against the team we lost to in 86. Other than that, I think they’re great.

love the 80's uniforms and the Hat
I for one wish the Halos would go back to the 80’s color. I loved the 1979 uniforms and 80’s. Would be cool to go back and have them just add the button down. The Angels also had a dark blue uniform shirt that they would wear in spring training and warm ups. The two best logos on the side of the uniforms is the state with the Angels spelled in it from 71 to 85 and then 85-92.
The Angles had the best colors in baseball and the best hats. I understand the all red concept that Kevin U. started but I feel we copied the Cardinals.
The 1995-96 Blue alternate jersey was cool too. Finally, miss the name the California Angels and now with Anaheim and the cities rule we have to have the name Anaheim in all teams, bummer.

I agree with you (and your stylish avatar icon)
I loved the old CA logo. A co-worker even found an old baseball mini batting helmet with that beautiful logo. The first logo I remember was last night’s thicker halo, and I love that one, too, but I loved “CA” – it seemed instantly old school.
I can’t say I was ever a fan of the awful Disney one with the toy bats and the vaguely Avalanchey design.
Throwbacks are awesome, and for once our wishy-washy history of logos comes in handy.
That being said, the AL was waiting for an all-red team. The NL has too many red-primary in the Phils, Cards, and Reds (can probably count the Nats, too), but the Angels are the only ones in their league.
But the cap I wear is still the 09 BP cap, with the navy hat and red bill. My Angels hoody is navy with the little current red logo. I just love me some navy.

I thought this would be kind of a meh gimmick at first
but when I went on opening night and saw those unis from when I first started going to games in Anaheim, the sense of deja vu was profound.

I could not agree more -- I love those unis for precisely the same reason
Reminds me of when I fell in love with baseball and takes me back to being a wide-eyed kid going to Anaheim Stadium and watching childhood heroes like Rod Carew, Reggie Jackson (my favorite because he could swing harder — though he might also miss — than anyone else), Freddie Lynn, Brian Downing, Bobby Grich, et al.
Have been on the lookout for the late 80s-early 90s throwback caps online w/ the 50th anniversary patch, but haven’t had any luck. Alas!

Lame
Maybe because I associate those uni’s with failure, but I just don’t like the color combo of red and navy blue, and that Angels font is, well, lame. The Disney uni’s are ok, the CA uni’s are ok, but this one, ugh.

HOW
are the cartoon Disney logos okay? Periwinkle and Pinstripes doesn’t say “grown men playing a competitive sport” to anyone.

Because Erstad batted .355 with that uniform!

I liked the way they looked compared to anything the Halos had used previously.
Except for maybe the CA design. And I first took my kids to games when they wore those uni’s, so maybe they have some sentimental value for me unlike the loser uniforms they wore last night. I realize that nobody else here cares for them but so what, I likes what I likes and you can like what you like.

but i know for me, with that chip on my shoulder as an angels fan, i didn’t need anything else adding to the idea that the angels were a joke of a professional team.

disagree on loser uniforms
why is everyone calling the 80’s uniforms the loser uniform?Yes I understand had several loosing years in the 80’s. But, won two divisional titles, and in 79 .A lot harder to win the division then and not a stupid 4 team division. Yes, had heartbreak in 82 up 2-0 on the Brewers and then 86 is the worst moment for me ever as a baseball fan, was in 7th grade at the time. But, hey the 86 team was good, I believe was it Joyner or someone maybe Ruppert Jones was hurt in that series. But, dont take away the titles the Angels won in a tougher division. The Royals in the 80’s our rival was very good. The White Sox had good teams, also had the Twins, Rangers, A’s Seattle who sucked.

Sentimental value
They were the uniforms I saw as a kid [well, the CA ones from Angels in the Outfield too].
But I liked the uniforms. Looking back, I see how much better some of these throwbacks and our current unis are, but I won’t ever really hate the periwinkle uniforms.
Not just cool, but BITCHEN!

Love 'em
I was too young to really follow the team much in the 80’s…born in ’79 but those the unis I wore as a Little Leaguer!
Throwbacks in general are cool to most people my age (21)
My go-to angel hat it the blue hat/red bill lowercase “a” with a halo over it.
I think the sentimental value is what matters to older fans and the retro theme is what is cool to younger fans.
"I have one word for you...Be careful."

My favorite throwback uniform: 2002
Play in red dammit and win it all.
Don't call me Bugs. Although Bugs Bunny could do it all on the baseball field.
It's fun, but that's about it
The hat with the lowercase a and the matching uni was the biggest design failure in the team’s history (the hat lasted for just one year [1971] and with a different cap, the uni was gone after the 1972 season). The lowercase a just made the team look small, as if they were the diminutive of the pro team. It was as if the Angels were on the cast of Muppet Babies.
The navy blue unis—I think they were alternates—first put into play by Disney in the mid 90s were really pretty cool.

The interlocking CA, with the curve of the C being the crossbar of the A (and thus, different from the original California Angels caps of the late 60s), combined with the navy color was pretty sharp, and it was a different blue from the team up the highway.
I’ll always have a soft spot in my heart for the LA Angels unis of the early 60s, the team I fell in love with. It was classic, traditional, clean.
But I love the red. It is a color unique among California clubs, it is dynamic, it is primal, it is the color of the Angels.

RE:Red
When they unveiled the new uniforms for 2002, my initial reaction was that they were exactly how the Angels were always supposed to look.
We’re never going to do better than our current look. They can mess around with our alternate uniform or do an alternate cap, but I hope we keep our current home/road set forever.
loved the 80's uniforms
as I stated, I have never been a fan of the all red uniforms. Also, wasnt a fan of the uniform changing a lot in the 90’s mostly due to Disney my guess. But, I do like the look above nice jersey love the colors. I hate all red, just hate it reminds me of the Texas Rangers when they started to wear just the red. If anything please bring back the hats of the 80’s. I see the Angels wear them I believe only in pre game.

Cool
At the Stadium Shop tonight, I bought one of the 1960s L.A. Angels caps with the interlocking “LA” and silver halo on top. Totally bitchin’ hat, and I’m not someone who wears baseball caps except when going to (or playing in) a baseball game.
I also really liked the “CA” cap; I think it must be a mid-to-late ’60s cap.
I hope to make it to one of the throwback nights. I’d love to see some of the uniforms from before my time.
There are two variants on the CA cap.
One from the ’60s and one from the ’90s.

The throwbacks don't look quite right. I can't quite put my finger on it.
The hats look right, and the jerseys, but they still don’t look like the 60’s and 70’s. Something is still missing…

I think it’s the black shoes that throws everything off. They wore red shoes when they wore those uniforms regularly.

Both uniforms were worn in the 80s.
They were v-neck to start the decade. They became button down in the late 80s/early 90s..
I hate the throwbacks...
Reminds me of the days of when we terrible, or choked.
I would be happy to never see them again.
I love some throwbacks.
The disney wing A crap was gayer than 9 guys on ten guys. The baseball gods will never allow periwinkle and movies like Angels in the Outfield to win a WS. Does anyone but myself and the Rally Manatee remeber that the angels had light blue alternates, in that same Phillies/Royals era that all teams had em. Those I’d like to own/see. Beyond that, i love those one season CA semi throwback, just before disney unis. i wish we’d just bring some “anaheim” version of those back…. I love our boys, but I miss blue… red’s not my thing, i hate walking around dressed like a crossing guard. love those dark blue 80’s BP jerseys too.
