Ervin Santana threw 6 innings and struck out 5 but was haunted by the longball, surrendering a 3-run HR to Matt Joyce to break an early 1-1 tie between Mike Scioscia and his former right-hand man Joe Maddon. It was Santana's first win of the 2011 season. Scott Downs pitched a scoreless inning of relief having just left the Disabled List for a stomach virus acquired two weeks ago in Chicago. It was his first appearance since April 13. Jordan Walden got his 4th save of 2011, throwing 18 pitches in the 9th, 12 for strikes with 1 pitch clocking 100 MPH on the TV radar gun.
And since we cap on Vernon Wells plenty, let it be known that he made a great running catch for the second out of the 9th inning, saving a run. Vernon, AKA "King Lousy" also scored a run, had a hit and a whole RBI courtesy of a sacrifice fly. Wow!
