Down 5, Angels Win in Tampa Comeback!
The Angels bullpen was stellar in support of the comeback allowing two hits in five shutout innings. Scott Downs pitched two innings of zeroes, entering the game in the fifth with two on and nobody out with Chatwood having walked that shutdown tightrope as far as a kid could. Rich Thompson got the win, Fernando Rodney got a Hold and Jordan Walden had 1-2-3 9th for his 5th save. When Rodney walked the leadoff bater in the 8th, the alarm bells promptly sounded and Hisanori Takahashi and Wolverine Rodriguez jumped into warmup tossing. When Chatwood was shaky early, longman Trevor Bell was spotted warming up, meaning every all arms were on deck this afternoon for a game the Angels, by all rights, should have long lost.
After his non-stat CERA had suffered with five runs in the first inning, Hank Conger started the long road back for the Angels with a solo homer to RF. A four-run fifth inning saw the Angels score on three walks, two singles and a passed ball. In the 8th inning, Torii Hunter scored on a 1-out dribbler form Conger when Vernon Wells smartly pulled a Benny Hill and Yakkity-Saxed between two infielders, allowing Hunter time to cross the plate before the out was recorded.
After taking this series from the Rays, the Angels open a four game series in Boston's overrated capitol of whitebread sentimentality, Fenway Park with their nemesis Red Sox awaiting.

now time for some boston payback!!

Gotta give Vern some love
for that good baserunning play. Something positive from him.

Downs is the correct answer.
Nice series.
Now let’s head to Boston and not get our teeth kicked in again.
I've got nothing.
A baserunning Benny Hill? Good analogy.
That’s a play that I’ve always thought would work, but had never seen someone do.
Best case scenario: Run scores, guy beats the throw to first.
Worst case snenario: They throw to get the runner and you still have runners on first and second.

Thanks
It was pretty savvy, I bet that 2nd baseman feels pretty stupid right now, he should have tossed to the shortstop for the force.
Could have easily turned two. It was Conger lumbering down the line
what a dumb play by zobrist. If that was Sean Rodriguez, the inning is over courtesy of a 4-6-2 DP
I love this team.

I'm still blown away that this kid is splitting time 50/50.
His talent is self-evident, and all the tales of him being a liability behind the plate are old testament now.
Unless they’re legitimately worried about Hank’s injury potential, he should be starting two games out of three. I’ve seen enough.
Notice how the number of dropped balls drops significantly when Conger catches?
Also, he is MUCH better at throwing runners out. These are two things that MAthis AND Napoli were both horrible at. Conger should be out starting catcher.
Sosh is running a straight lefty/righty platoon
Unless Sosh feels more confident with Conger’s splits in that he can hit left handers better then Premium, I’m sure this situation will continue
by Bozo's1000son on May 1, 2011 3:08 PM PDT up reply actions
Of course, Premium can't hit righties or lefties
If we have to go with this approach,
I’d rather see Wilson splitting time with King Conger
How bad would that be?
According to Basebaall Reference – % of starting pitchers who are left handed
Angels American League Opponents: 33%
Angels American League West Opponents (Tex, Sea, Oak): 53%
Figure that would average out to 40% of games started by a lefty against the Angels==> 60% of the games would be started by Conger. I would take that. Soth obviously likes Mathis, any step towards playing Conger as the #1 catcher is a step in the right direction.

The Angels must be desperate to say something positive about Vernon Wells.
Leading off the postgame show with his smart baseball running. Come on, was it really that brilliant? I’ve seen little leaguers do it.
He was still 0-3 and is down to .170.

his 1st base coverage was awesome.
I was so prepared for some kinda brain fart on his behalf. A reliever has to be angrily obsessed with getting out of innings and he showed that today.
"We are not on an austerity program," Arte Moreno
Tuned in late
so what i saw, I’d go with Hunter.
maybe Wells is just slow afoot too (j/k – nice job there but it was more Zobrist for BOTG)
and i thought the reference to Downs was the reference to him making Weaver sick which led to today’s chain of events. Nice to hear he pitched well…..and it’s the city of Boston hoding the barf bag tomorrow night after Weaver gets through with them. But you won’t notice, the whole city smells like puke anyways.
That's why I didn't give Downs POTG.
Did it for Conger.

why wasn't chatwood given a shot?
granted he gave up 5 in the 1st, but that’s all he gave up. he did settle down for three scoreless, and the offense came alive. that is a pretty gutsy accomplishment for a veteran pitcher, and he is a barely out of triple a rookie. i vote for tyler on this one.
by hoffy loves the angels on May 1, 2011 2:29 PM PDT reply actions
Is this just the Impressive Rookie Effect?
I don’t get all the love for Chatwood’s actual performance so far. He’s got a 5 ERA (and probably deserves worse), his walk rates and strike out rates have been bad, and he’s making the bullpen do a lot of work. His potential is there, and I’m excited about it, but he’s just not ready, and his performance so far has reflected that.
So why a free pass? If you’re not going to criticize him, at least criticize the front office which is doing the short-sighted thing by keeping him up.
Defending maligned chants since 2009
Praying for speedy recovery for Weaver.
I think maybe God had a plan for him to pitch in Boston to show the Red Sox that we were in control.
Good to see that we can get some offense. Conger was great; we need to see more of him.
Get well soon, Jered!

POTG, Bullpen and Offense
Amazing job by the pen to shut down the rays offense and the offense for waking up after yesterday and scoring 6 runs. I’m hoping hoping that run down that Wells got into will maybe(?) help him with his confidence at the plate and make him more relaxed and not think he has to win the game every time he’s at bat due to his past screw ups, we’ll see. Thompson and Walden are pure money. SO nice to know there are two guys out in the pen that we can rely on when the game is on the line. Let’s kick some chowder-head ass!!
Agreed.

Anyone hear Jose Mota talkin about how the offensive numbers are way down this year in the MLB?
Teams are batting a cumulative .251 and are averaging only 8 runs a game (both teams combined) per game. All the power numbers are way down as well. He said it was the lowest numbers the league has seen at this point of the season in 17 years (back to 1996).
His reasoning for this abrupt and shocking change: the total disappearance of steroids and other performance-enhancing drugs.
Pitchers used steroids too, so I don't know how well that reasoning would hold up
if everyone fessed up who did them. I think there are an unusual amount of injuries to players early this season than usual and possibly more slumps like Wells and others that usually may hit better.
"It's our money," owner Arte Moreno said.
My intuition says roids give a bigger aid to hitters than pitchers
Tim Lincecum is a twig. Pitchers don’t need bulk up to throw harder and be successful.
Bulk helps batters hit the ball harder and farther.
I agree that a ton of pitchers had been juicing, but it seems there is less advantage gained by a pitcher using steroids.
The mota-less Mota refers to ALL sluggers
I tell ya what though: when Trumbo gets ahold of one—SEE YA!
Of course that's what they say
But there have also been larger historical shifts in league statistics without an identifiable cause. Correlation, as they say, is not causation. In this case, I would be much more suspicious of the media’s eagerness to put this black eye behind it. “Oh look, steroids are over now, let’s give ourselves credit for a job well done…”
Maybe so.
More pitchers using wicked splitters and 3-seam fastballs this year; more rookies struggling; more overpaid lazy fatcats basking in their millions as they flail helplessly at balls they would have jacked previously before wallowing in their new-found riches; or maybe it’s just “heavier air”—flucuations in global warming, and atmospheric conditions due to the tsunami have produced more humidity and conflicted air currents which negate the powerful drives of our sluggers. Maybe it’s those damn maple bats. Maybe it’s—somehow—the fault of the teachers of America, as the Tea Party would have it.
Maybe it’s…yes! . . . the intangibles . . .
I tend to think Mota may be right.
Maybe it’s—somehow—the fault of the teachers of America, as the Tea Party would have it.

But I suppose it was a bit of a cheap shot
and for that, I apologize.
(sometimes I can’t help but channel the spirit of Twain, Swift and Voltaire)
Twain & Swift were satirists, taking shots in all directions
so you’re disqualified on those two.
Voltaire hated the idea of a people’s democracy because, in his view, the commoners were idiots. This one more you?
"If a woman has to choose between catching a fly ball and saving an infant's life, she will choose to save the infant's life without even considering if there are men on base." ~Dave Barry
No. No. Not disqualified, my Halo brother.
Very much in the thick of it.
It’s just postmodern satire. Voltaire went after all self-righteous social and political movements. Give me more time and I’ll hit the other side, as it were.
Ah yes, humor.
What makes a statement humorous is some strain of truth in the humorous statement. What is the strain of truth in the quote above? For example (since you mention Mark Twain) he has been quoted as follows, “I never let school interfere with my education”. I believe you would agree there are numerous “strains” of truth in that quote.
What are the strains of truth in your statement? It would have to be along the lines that the Tea Party somehow dislikes teachers…which would be newsworthy and would make your statement humorous) if true. Would it be as humorous to you to write, “Maybe it’s – somehow – the fault of the teachers of America, as the Green Party would have it”?
Yes there is great irony there--and Twain would have loved it.
How he railed against the medicrity of education back then, while years after his death he becomes ensconsed in the very fabric of American Arts and Letters—we all adopted him no matter what he thought about education. And with the popularity of Adventures of Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer, along with his keen perspicacity and insight, I’m sure he had an inkling that he might be perceived in a favorable light by future writers and teachers, and like Huck Finn checking out the wild shenanaigans of his buddy Tom Sawyer, would idea would have definitely given him a chuckle.
Ha. Good thing . . .
When you combine a piss test and performance malfunctions, you’ll find performance-enhancing drugs I’m sure.
(Byw, remind me not to joke about anything you write here ever again )
what about the smaller bats
I think that plays a big part
i voted for mike in my head
for playing conger over mathis. thank god!
conger > mathis
i can't believe they came back
this is the team i remember, but not the team i’ve seen. i half-expected a headline that read, “angels go down 5-0 in first inning, quietly forfeit.”
way to go angels, and way to go vernon. if your bat is ice cold bring it any other way you can.
