Angels Bullpen Woes Lead to 6-4 Loss

Soth: "I'm telling ya, using two relievers to record two outs is a brilliant idea. It has always worked out for me before...."

Star-divide

Kevin Jepsen, who was called up yesterday to fill in for Francisco "Wolverine" Roriguez's spot on the roster, pitched the 10th inning retiring Juan Pierre on a groundout but then started to show signs of his former self giving up a base hit to Alexi Ramirez followed by a double down the left-field line to Adam Dunn to set-up the intentional walk to Paul Konerko.... At least that was the plan until Jepsen unleashed a pitch over Hank Conger's head which allowed Ramirez to score and Dunn to advance to 3rd. A sac-fly out to Peter Bourjos for the 2nd out allowed Dunn to tag up and score. Pierzynski struck out to end the inning.

Looks like Jordan Walden has picked up some bad habits from bullpen teammate Fernando Rodney as he was staked to a 4-2 lead only to blow it in the top of the 9th inning. Unfazed by this recent turn of events, the Angels in the 9th saw Reggie Willits take a walk to leadoff the inning only to have Peter Bourjos hit a pop-up to Ramirez and Erick Aybar ground into an rally-killing-double-play.

So yeah... 15 hits surrendered by Angels pitching  + late inning meltdown =  the shadows of the 2010 season still haunt this team....

Why bring in Jepsen?

He sucked in bigs, sucked in AAA…lets put him in a tie game. Did all our relievers that actually get outs all leave? What about Downs or Thompson who both have earned some trust with a game on the line?

Terrible bullpen management tonight.

Pulling Downs and Thompson when they were pulled was ridiculous.

Downs got a K and allowed an infield single, for some reason Scioscia didn’t want him facing Quentin

And then Thompson got a groundout on 1 PITCH!

But Rodney is the setup guy, so he has to pitch the 8th

BOTG has to be Scioscia.

Bad bullpen management helps lead to another BP meltdown. Hard for me to be too pissed at Walden, Fraudney is the one that allowed the Sox to chip away at our lead, and why the hell was Chopper pulled anyway? The Soth loves him some BP roles.

Rodney was a lousy closer and now he is a lousy set up guy. He is a lousy pitcher period. Why can’t Soth see that after a while? I guess because of the money and the contract. Hopefully he will be gone after this year.

Did anyone else think it was weird how Jose Mota pretty much called out Morales on the post game?

He said this surgery was elective and no one the Angels asked him to get it. Supposedly it is clear out scar tissue. In 1999 when Mo Vaughn had that bad ankle injury he supposedly went to some ballet dance instructor person and broke up the scar tissue with some exercises that are known to those types because of similar injuries arising in dance.

BOTG Waldo

He failed to do his job, plain and simple. Sosh was an idiot with the bullpen yet again: Thompson throwing one pitch in the 7th and not going back out for the 8th was asinine. But Walden had a 2 run lead and his job is to finish off the other team. He couldn’t find his command and blew the save.

As for Jepsen, that was simply pathetic. How do you throw an intentional ball 5 feet over your catcher’s head? Tonight was an embarrassment. March 12 was a shitty day in Angels baseball. Let’s move on.

I'm surprised the team had the lead it did when it lost it.

Not to take too much away from Chatwood, but I don’t know how you put eleven men on base, strike out no one, surrender a home run, and still only give up one run. That’s some David Copperfield shit right there, and it seems only a matter of time before his Rodney-esque luck swings around to the other pole of the pendulum.

25 walks against 18 strikeouts thusfar — and a WHIP of 1.54. We shouldn’t expect that 3.67 ERA to last.

by Turks Teeth on May 11, 2011 11:16 PM PDT reply actions

I agree

I have been very surprised about the recent string of luck that Chatwood has experienced since his Angels debut. He’s been a definite improvement over Kazmir (remember that guy?) but somehow this has all the makings of a bubble, as applied to luck and pitching, and sooner or later the clock will strike midnight on this Cinderella.

Yeah, even Palmer had better peripherals during his magic run in 2009.

It’s really fun to hope it will, but this won’t last much longer.

Chatwood has a good sinker — he’ll eventually be a good pitcher. But I think we’re very fortunate with the results thusfar.

I also don’t like us lining up our sinkerballers back to back –– it lets the opposing team get too adjusted game over game.

by Turks Teeth on May 11, 2011 11:44 PM PDT up reply actions

The final base-runner tally was 23-11 Chicago

Inducing double plays is a legitimate skill, but that game doesn’t take 10 innings to decide on most nights. I just wonder how long the Angels will stick with Chatwood once the runners start coming around more often.

hey these things happen

you can’t expect guys to go out and win all the time against teams with losing records. you can’t blame a pitcher at the major league level to throw 4 intentional balls to the catcher without letting 1 get away. and bunting is not part of the regular game that hitters at this level should know how to do. i mean, you learn these things in little league, and you make to the bigs and your around 20-26yrs. old. that’s like 10 to 15 yrs. of doing it, so i think you guys are expecting too much from some of these guys.

HH community member.

We got into a long debate about Dunn the last series with the ChiSox.

He doesn’t like Dunn’s RISP, and would prefer a player like Wells (who has averaged 78 RBIs over the past three seasons) to Dunn (who has averaged 102 RBIs over the same span).

Dunn apparently doesn’t maximize his cleanup opportunities to the extent he could, and walks too much when he should be knocking in the boys.

by Turks Teeth on May 11, 2011 11:59 PM PDT up reply actions

i wish i was here for that debate

as soon as he came available, i said (to myself of course) we need to get that guy. even with morales back and healthy, he is a + for this team. and now it would sure be nice to have an everyday 1st/of player to have in our lineup. before i would have given kendrys a dollar i would have had this guy in my hip pocket. why do the angels think that having 1 power hitter in your lineup is enough. look at boston, new york, texas and even chicago. they all have 2 or 3 28+ homerun hitters and if we want to compete on a serious level with them we need to do the same.

by hoffy loves the angels on May 12, 2011 12:07 AM PDT up reply actions

We already had Adam Dunn Jr.

The Angels just don’t appreciate the skill set. They operate under the false belief that groundouts are more productive than walks so long as they advance a base runner, and that hitting a home run with no one on base is obviously the batter’s fault.

by Suboptimal on May 12, 2011 12:17 AM PDT up reply actions

No, I meant Mike Napoli

Napoli has a very similar profile to Dunn. Their career averages are both exactly .249 because they strike out so much, but they both draw lots of walks and hit for power. Dunn is just better at it.

that is a relief

i thought i missed something between fl. and ca., and ga. , but he would even be better than what we have now. which is a rookie w/ no help.you know i don’t mind the small ball approach if you have people who can get on base. and you have to have a real power threat to keep pitchers honest. we don’t have that.

it is not very wise to expect trumbo to carry the big stick for this team, some vet. exp. would be a godsend for him. torii doesn’t have it and wells surely doesn’t have it. there is really nobody on this team right now to help get him good atbats. by that i mean a viable threat to hit one out, so you have to make good pitches to multiple power hitters instead of 1

Why all the Scioscia hate?

If it had been Rodney still in the closer’s spot, he would have gotten 95% of the blame votes. Walden blew this one. No, Scioscia didn’t manage the pen the best. But he had his best reliever ready in the ninth inning with a two-run lead. Can you really expect him to manage differently?

Just because he’s a rookie doesn’t mean he should get shielded from blame. This one’s on Walden. A three-out, two-run lead against a mediocre offense at home should be a piece of cake.

BOTG Scioscia

I hate the way he is handling the bullpen. It doesn’t make any sense to bring in Thompson for one batter and then turning the game over to a crummy pitcher like Rodney just because it is the eight inning.

by LAA of A Fan on May 12, 2011 9:03 AM PDT reply actions

So you want to pitch Thompson every game?

No, it doesn’t make sense to bring him in for one pitch. But that’s not what lost the game. Walden lost the game. Rodney is one of the top four relievers in the bullpen (behind Walden, Thompson, and Downs, I would say). He has to pitch sometimes. And why not in a game with a three run lead? As we saw, he struggled, but ultimately delivered a two-run lead to the ninth inning when Scioscia had the Angels best reliever ready.

Scioscia’s bullpen management didn’t lose this game. The bullpen lost the game.

I was coming home from work check the score on my phone the angels were winning 4-1 after 7. I called the wife to say "i’m coming home and the angels are winning 4-1 after 7. She she’s if I want her to tape it I say no its looking good. If it gets close I’ll be home at least for the nith inning. Then a minute later it says Rodney is piching and I call the wife tell her Oh no the relievers are taking over and to tape the game. I come home play it from the top of 8 and watch the disaster the rest of the way. Un freakin real.
On a positive note we are still 1.5 games ahead of oakland and texas. If we have the bull pen of years past when after the 7th with a lead we almost always win, we’d probably be at least 5 games up and it would be without our best hitter. This thanks to our awesome starting pitching, they have taken their lumps too but its been one of the best in baeball so far. Come on bull pen get it together. Step up or get sent down, no matter how much you make. Getting ridiculous, like watching last year when our bullpen tried to hold and save games.
