Meet Your Angels Blogger: Rextookmystash
In our ongoing series of getting to know the powers-that-be here at Halos Heaven, we present you with interviews of the bloggers and site monitors that make this place the paradise on earth that it is. Tonight brings us to Nick Lopez, aka REXTOOKMYSTASH. Take it away RTMS...
WHO WAS THE FIRST ANGELS PLAYER YOU DECIDED WAS "YOUR GUY" ?
I wish I could name some random obscure player from the 1970's but I'm not that old school. On that note, I'd have to say that guy I looked forward to seeing the most was Troy Percival. Percy definitely got me stoked for Angels baseball. I really enjoyed his focus and attitude. He had a presence on the mound that perfectly edified what a closer should be like. Plus he totally kicked ass in the playoffs. According to BBRef, he had 7 saves and a 1.00 WHIP during our 2002 campaign. What would we have done without that? I shudder to think.
WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE CURRENT ANGEL AND WHY?
Jeff Mathis by a long shot. Okay enough of that. Aside from his current stink fest, it's Torii Hunter. I really appreciate the attitude and cheer he brought to the team. You can explicitly tell that everyone likes him. It must be great to have a teammate like that in the clubhouse. I'm assuming the younger guys go to him for advice as well. He's definitely lost a step in the field but that doesn't mean he can't share the holistic depth of his baseball knowledge with the young guns that we've had so much fun watching over this season. His charity work outside of baseball, which garnered him the Branch Rickey award in 2009, is also very commendable.
WHICH SIDE OF THE "STATS VS CHEMISTRY" DEBATE ARE YOU ON AND WHY?
I'm still relatively new the world of advanced statistics but I'm definitely leaning in that direction. No matter how ingrained statistics, both old and new, impart themselves into baseball decisions, I'll never dismiss the importance of team chemistry as it relates to the overall club house atmosphere. All-in-all, I think they are both integral ingredients when discussing the recipe for organizational success, and avoiding either would be doing a disservice to any franchise.
PICK A SONG FOR THE ANGELS TO REPLACE BUTTERCUP WITH?
Domination by Pantera. Why the hell not right?
IF YOU WERE IN CHARGE OF THE ANGELS SUMMER CONCERT SERIES, NAME THE PERFORMER YOU BREAK THE BANK TO GET.
I'm going to have to pick more than one. It'd be Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros opening, then a set by the Black Keys, and finally a reunion show by Led Zeppelin, although that would likely never happen. A man can dream can't he?
SAY SOMETHING BALLSY / CONTROVERSIAL FOR US TO REMEMBER YOU BY....
I grew up on food stamps and welfare in the biggest shit hole roach motels that the Beach Boulevard corridor had to offer. Sporadic bouts of foster homes were also a mainstay for me. Nevertheless, I started out going down a pretty bad path but luckily one semester of community college, which was free thanks to Uncle Sam, changed my whole outlook on life. Five and a half years of hard work later, I became the first in my family to graduate college with a BS degree in business. Due to this I became a staunch Republican and will destroy any liberal in an informed debate. Living in San Francisco, this has been a difficult position to be in to say the least. I've lost friends over my political affiliation but hopefully none of my HH friends are going to abandon me now that it's clear I'm a rich white war monger. :)

It has got to be lonely being a Republican in deep blue San Fran.
A wise man does not need advice and a fool won't take it.
That would be one hell of a concert...
God #@%^ Mother F@#$in' Reagins! You make Omar Minaya look good.
"Nevertheless, I started out going down a pretty bad path"
Best piece of writing I’ve seen all week.
Congrats on seizing your own destiny!
Dude,
I became the first in my family to graduate college with a BS degree in business.
Respect!

rec'd for proving that a bad start....
is not necessarily a bad finish.
Will be showing this to several of my teen son’s buddies who need to think about this concept.
Glad to see you had the balls to make a change for the better........
as someone who could have easily chosen a much easier and detrimental path as a youth as well……I applaud you good sir!

I like that: "one semester of community college changed my life"
I’m happy to say we hear that all the time, and it’s good that your so-called “change” wasn’t directed exclusively towards a “liberal slant” (if you will), which shows that a college education can “direct” people in any number of ways—not just the liberal path, as many claim. (Howz that LAASurfin?).
As an educator, I’m not so caught up in “changing” people’s lives, but more in assisting people in their choices or even inspiring some choices, ideas and/or changes: creating a positive experience from a number of angles.
I would definitely attend that concert
The Black Keys are my favorite band. Saw them live at the Glass House in Pomona. Amazing show. They just went in and rocked it for an hour.
As a Democrat in Orange County, I can appreciate your position
Good for you on your success in the face of adversity.

"Due to this"
How does earning a college degree on federal grants/loans lead immediately to staunch Republicanism? I would expect the opposite. The students I’ve had in my classes who also receive heavy financial aid tend to be the most outspoken liberals.
There must be more to the story. I’m also the first in my family with a college degree, but in my case, education has filled me with political nihilism. I’ve studied too much American history to see contemporary politics as anything more than same shit, different day.

My guess is that he's basing that comment more on his experiences with food stamps/welfare and entering the business world and less on his experiences with government subsidized education.
Pollyanna is dead. But don't get mad at me, I didn't kill her. Tony Reagins did.
Didn't it take a "hand out" to get from A to B?
Again, I’m not pushing a political view. This just reminds me of a classroom discussion I had a little while ago. One of my students, who comes from economically disadvantaged circumstances, made the same argument when a couple of other students attacked the government’s science education policies in the 1950s. I had to move the conversation elsewhere to keep things from getting too personal.
syudents wearing their life on their sleeve
is the biggest downer in college classrooms as far as I can surmise from my adacemic friends
“I had an experience and demand that all discussions of related topics be filtered through my perceptions with terminiology I approve and with deference to my feelings, no matter how ludicrous, self-entitled, out of touch or downright narcissistic my perceptions about this experience.”

My main problem is getting kids to actually think on their own
In my experience, the image of the Ivory Tower as a chamber of indoctrination is at least half wrong. My students play games with me to find out what I think the “right” answer is, then they reproduce my opinion hoping to earn points. It drives them nuts when I refuse to answer and try to lead them toward an original thought instead. The system makes them feel like there are hoops for them to jump through, but damn, if there aren’t any obvious hoops they will beg me to give them some.
I was just interpeting, not taking a position either way.
I can see truthes to both sides of that argument.

It starts with Federal grants and loans, and ends up as staunch Republicanism. Federal aid: JUST SAY NO!!!

This is one of those joke interviews, amirite?
like peeps that go on the Maury Scrot-itch show. Classic made-up story. I like it.
I love this team.
Blood brothers!
I resisted the dark side too, and cut off friendships that were unhealthy, started out at Santa Barbara City College then finished at UCSB. I too managed to avoid the liberal brainwashing and remain a conservative in the ultra-liberal Santa Barbara area. Maybe it’s not quite as bad as SF here, but they wish they could be!
Trust the Deception
I thought that was only in Isla Vista.
Other than Neverland Ranch, isn’t Santa Barbara “Reagan Country”?

Far from it
Reagan had a ranch here, but there aint much loyalty to his cause. IV is certainly liberal because of all the professors brainwashing the students, but the rest of the city is pretty liberal too. Goleta is a little more conservative, blue collar than SB, but still leans pretty far left. Let’s put it this way – I can’t remember the last time a candidate or measure that I voted for actually won.
