That's the Bees, not the whole farm system, but yeah.

I once heard Tony say in an interview that the Angels always have a five year plan for the team’s success. Really?

"It's our money," owner Arte Moreno said.

Yes, Tony's plan:

Success is always 5 years away.

I heard Barry Zito

is available
maybe we can trade for his contract too.

If true, this is the first intelligent baseball decision by Arte in months.

He’s spending $139m, the 4th highest payroll in all of baseball, and what he has bought is the island of misfit toys. Attendance is down. Merchandising revenue is down. Crap talent = crap results.

Like it’s been said: hit Arte in the wallet, and he’ll listen. I hope this is the beginning of the real changes that must be made before the team can return to respectability…and then competing for a championship.

I was thinking the same thing. I still have hope that the Angels can win the West as a fan. Maybe if the fall way back in the A.L West they could trade Joel Pineiro and Bobby Abreu.

by ramo on Jun 16, 2011 4:31 PM PDT up reply actions

Hilarious.

The one thing Tony had going for him was handing over blank checks to whomever would accompany him on a date to Del Taco.

Taco Tony isn’t going to outwit anyone at the trade deadline, so, this must spell the beginning of the glorious end.

I can’t wait until i read the headlines here on HH “TONY REAGINS FIRED.”

I don't disagree

and we all know very well that “Whatever it takes” was never meant to mean the budget was/is unlimited.

My only purpose in posting was to point out the dicohotomy between what was said and what ultimately happened. If I had that particular loss of face, I’d react to it.

Who was the last MLB GM to be fired mid-season? Let’s see… Josh Byrnes, Diamondbacks, right? Last year? Around the All Star break? And he still had, what, 5 years left on the long-term contract Diamondbacks’ ownership had given him in 2007? And Arte is tight friends with Diamondback ownership, right?

Hmm…

Why did Arte say "No more spending this year?"

Because he plans to fire Reagins by the end of the season and he’ll let the new GM, hopefully someone much more competent than Reagins, do the spending.

Rec'd

It’s our GM’s responsibility to put the best pieces possible on the roster, it’s the manager’s responsibility to put the best players on the field.
It’s the owner’s responsibility to take care of the finances and provide the best atmosphere possible. Not an all-telling thing but ESPN’s franchise rankings has us a the number 1 baseball franchise for like the 5th year in a row. Because we have the best ticket prices and one of the best in-park atmospheres in sports. Those are a tribute to Arte.
The team’s performance is a credit to Reagins and Soth and his coaching staff.

This is good news

Seriously. We need bad contracts off our books so we can lock up Weave and improve with smart moves, not colossally stupid ones.

Also, come on Cardinals, you don’t want Pinata back? At all?

Also, LOL at anyone wanting to pay Fraudney anything.

Should not have been made public

This is twice Arte has placed Tony in a position of weakness at the bargaining table. First, he promised to spend money and bring in a bat. Toronto heard those comments.

Now, Tony will be limited in doing the one thing he did well last year: work trades. Other GMs know he has a financial directive from the top and play that into their favor.

Tony has enough issues on his own. He doesn’t need help.

by JeffJoiner on Jun 16, 2011 5:52 PM PDT reply actions

good point

Dang it. If we can’t even make a decent trade, we’re screwed. Might as well stock up on prospects. Abreu could net a few. I don’t really want to trade Pineiro.

by Rally Manatee on Jun 16, 2011 6:19 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions

Tony put himself in a position of weakness at the bargaining table.

Other GMs have already figured out they could fleece him in a trade. Arte is just limited his damages to the ones already done by our pathetic, pathetic GM.

Pollyanna is dead. But don't get mad at me, I didn't kill her. Tony Reagins did.

by snowhor on Jun 16, 2011 6:24 PM PDT up reply actions

In the battle of wits, Tony Reagins was already unarmed

I don’t believe for a minute Arte made this decree. To make the statement to “stop spending” after he’s already committed $140m would mean that there wasn’t a budget for baseball operations already in place – which would mean Arte was operating without a business plan. Very unlikely.

The more plausible scenario is that Tony or someone close to Reagins created the story to deflect attention from the problems on the field for the team. Let’s face it – the team is still only 3 games out of 1st place. Tony now has room to make the case that he wanted to make trades, but ownership tied his hands.

Ultimately though, who cares. This is all just mental masturbation given how completely dysfunctional the Halo’s front office really is.

by mustard_man on Jun 17, 2011 4:07 AM PDT up reply actions

It wasn't made public....

Mark Saxon is quoting a “baseball source” . It’s hearsay at this point.

by firebird81 on Jun 17, 2011 6:52 AM PDT up reply actions

This hearsay happens to match perfectly with what we know about the Angels' financials

The team is losing money and won’t be gaining much of it back in the offseason.

by Suboptimal on Jun 17, 2011 11:21 AM PDT up reply actions

What do we know about the team's financials? Have they been published? Has the team said it's losing money?

I’m not saying it’s bullshit, just to be clear. I’m saying it’s hearsay until we get official word from the franchise. And, I’d still be willing to bet that if this team is in contention at the trade deadline and it makes sense….they’ll pull the trigger. Why? Because an appearance in the playoffs adds MILLIONS in revenue. Even if it is true, there could be several reasons for it. I just find it kinda funny that some of the very people getting angry about this rumor are the same people who have been calling for the Angels to sell since the second week of May! It should be good news to them….

by firebird81 on Jun 17, 2011 5:48 PM PDT up reply actions

Yes. The team's financials HAVE been published

along with several other team’s, on Deadspin.

Even if they hadn’t been, it’s not hard to deduce them. Salaries are known, sources of income – gate receipts, media revenues – are known. Average costs for MLB franchises – minor league operations, travel costs, etc. – are known. And, finally, the budget parameters under which Arte has run this team in the past are well known.

Pretty sure many of us were predicting this back in January in the Wells signing threads. Were you busy rec’ing thebigtizzle posts?

by LAASurfin on Jun 18, 2011 12:08 AM PDT up reply actions

you mean the financials for 2008-09???

Those are the financials shown on deadspin. It’s 2011. I can find absolutely no financials for 2011 showing Arte is losing money and needed to make this statement. Sure, it makes sense that he probably is. All that is beside the point. This is a rumor from an anonymous source. Normally Halos Heaven is pretty skeptical of anonymous sources, but this time everyone just glommed right on. I’m not here saying everything is fine, I’m saying it’s just a rumor until the organization says it’s not.

by firebird81 on Jun 18, 2011 8:34 AM PDT up reply actions

I also think that if Arte did tell Tony this

It’s probably the end of the line for Tony. But it’s just a rumor and I’ll bet that they pull the trigger if they’re in contention at the trade deadline.

Cutting Tony's credit card hurts, but it needs to happen.

Arte has all but fired Del Taco Tony, in my opinion. He should do it immediately, but will probably wait until after the season. This would be a mistake. Tony Reagins cannot be trusted to restock the farm system by trading our veterans. Finish him off Arte, pull the plug.

My response to your letter of February 19, 1976, is - kiss my ass.

Really?

It’s a rumor on mlbtraderumors.com. The very same website who’s sources have listed the Angels as front-runners for every major free agent available every single offseason. The very same website who gets it wrong more times than right…because it’s all hearsay. It is counterproductive for the team to have this be public and I’d bet that if Arte told Tony that, it would be between the two of them and nobody else. Again…it is a RUMOR from an anonymous “source”. When i read it on angelsbaseball.com then I will believe it. Until then, it’s just hearsay and reaching silly conclusions and insulting other people is just going tohave to wait.

My biggest rationalization of the trade (Which baffles me now but I own up to my errors in judgement)

was that Weaver and Kendry were already gone, regardless of money spent on anyone else.

also, he said pujols is much older than 31…
