An Appeal to the Design-Minded
DEAR Halos Community and hopefully, the Angels Marketing Department,
I grew up a California Angels fan and frankly lost interest when Disney bought the team and wrapped it in periwinkle pinstripes and cartoon wings.
As an illustrator, I understand how design can crystalize feelings about practically anything. When it comes to branding a sports franchise, there are few opportunities to completely reinvent a team's identity. It typically happens after an ownership change, a scandal or a terrible losing season - the kind that makes you want to sever all memory with those icons.
My return to the Angels came in Spring Training of 2002 when the new uniforms were introduced. The Angels were rumored to be up for sale and the Disney team ditched their family-friendly fluff for a sharp and bold typeface. The overhaul didn't stop there. Color became an expression of strength and passion; Red and White Home unis with Road Grays.
It may sound silly, but this was a team I could rally around - a team I was proud to wear.
It turns out I came back to root for my home team just in time. I credit some part of our World Series season with the power of iconography and color. Our success the last decade is inextricably tied to our design in memory and going forward, you do not want to completely reinvent the wheel.
You can however, evolve a palate. We did it before with the introduction of the red top unis. You also have an option with the Blue trim - but I think it distracts and dampens from your main message - Angel Red. The one cool change we've added recently and can build on is the Golden Halo. Introduced for the 50th anniversary, the gold adds a bit of complementary pop to this year's gear.
What better way to add to our design language than to keep the Golden Halo going forward?
It tells a story: From now on, the Golden Halo will represent a team that is not just turned 50 years old, but has 50 years under its belt and is moving forward with tradition. Plus it introduces another color - when used correctly - to reinforce our story for years to come.
This Fan-Post is authored by an independent fan. Tell us what you think and how you feel.

Since the golden anniversary is on its way out, that means the diamond anniversary is
on its way in. Each player should wear a large diamond in their ear next year. Especially since it is looking like the great golden anniversary season is going to be a big bust and one we will want to forget as soon as it’s over.
"It's our money," owner Arte Moreno said.
Diamond anniversary is 75 years
Long time to wait, but I like your idea!
They should go
back to the silver halo after this year. I like the gold, but it is definitely more fitting for an anniversary such as this.
Most kickass logo the Angels have ever had.

You need to drink more ovaltine

The same number as those since DOV was a member of HH.

I'm all for keeping the gold halo
I like its tie-in back to the California Angels days, and I like it on aesthetic grounds as well.
It was a tough break, that's all. How did I know I was shooting up a police car?
As do I looks clean with the Red.Silver was just meh...whatever but gold is like BAM!!!

I don't like how the gold halo looks on hats
But I understand it’s significance, so meh.
What we've got here is a failure to communicate.
"I'm just like you, but 10 times better"
I say keep it. I like the golden halo.
Cautious yet very optimistic about the 2011 Season. Go Angels.
Fifty years
a team that is not just turned 50 years old, but has 50 years under its belt
But this team plays like a bunch of fifty year old, ladies. Nothing against fifty somthing women, this is a pro baseball team for crice sakes.
The Halo on the cap is so lame
no wonder no one takes them seriously as a baseball team.
I brought sexy back, but they only gave me store credit....
Which? The throwbacks? That's what they had from 61-69.
Or do you mean the halo over the “A” on the front of the cap?
How is that lame?

I think he's referring to the ring around the top of the hat
reminds me of the old Pirate’s hats from the late 70’s
I'm an Angels fan
That hasn't been there since 1970, except for throwbacks. Why is Phi bringing it up now?

And I, for one, love that look.
I would rather have a distinctive halo on the cap of a team that could hit and score and hold a lead from the bullpen and manage resources wisely, than have a team with a cap that looks pretty much like anybody elses being worn by a team that does all those things poorer than pretty much anybody else of consequence.
