Angels Waste Late Rally, Lose to Rays in Extras, 4-3

Photo

Bobby Abreu hit a bases-clearing double to tie the game in the bottom of the 8th inning, only to see Fernando Rodney walk the leadoff batter in the top of the 10th. And you know how THAT goes. A potential game-winning shot to center by Abreu in the bottom half fell just short -- a fitting metaphor for the Angels offense so far this season. In this episode, the Angels get swept by the Rays.

It should never ever get to Fraudney

In the long run men hit only what they aim at. Therefore, though they should fail immediately, they had better aim at something high.

Holy crap, no it isn't

Who else is back there? Rodney has to pitch sometime, and with the way the Angels play (low-scoring), they are going to have more high late innings than other teams. It’s reality. Rodney is better than Jepsen, and probably equal to Bell and Takahashi. Heck, Thompson has been struggling lately.

Yes, Rodney is bad. But that’s not Scioscia’s fault. He needs to manage the pen so he doesn’t destroy Downs and Walden.

a horrible season is what this team needs, if only, to get tony reagins fired and some media pressure on scioscia’s in game decisions. Of course, calling tony reagins the worst gm in baseball is basically taking a shot at Scioscia, since he has his hand in every move, especially something in the off season.

Somewhere, right now, Mickey Hatcher is ruining a swing.

by Quad Fin Rider on Jun 8, 2011 10:46 PM PDT up reply actions

all I can think of-- baseball isn't billboards.

lets face it.. its fuckin’ billboards.

Arte wasn’t splicing atoms or designing a cold fusion motor. Possibly not the sharpest tool in the shed, but is blessed with an ungodly amount of money. He’s positioned himself into taking some horrible baseball advice, and, quite possibly, is still making a profit from ticket sales and stadium operations so he hasn’t been too quick to react to the downward spiral the ballclub has taken.

Hopefully he will figure it out, surround himself with some smarter people (think sosh, when the ballclub was good) and do a press junket in the off-season about how he’s doing whatever it takes to win… or some other bullshit machismo quote.

What do you need a fancy suit for, Charlie, you ain't got no job to wear it to.

If you can make billions off of billboards, you’re obviously not an idiot.

Arte has made ~$300M off of the Angels, from what he paid, to what they are currently valued.

Problem is that he is very loyal and has given Reagins too long of a leash. We’re about to wrap up 2 losing seasons in a row, I’m not sure how many more it will take. I pray not more than 3 and hope for only 2.

It’s like blaming a loss on the ump or refs (in another sport).

It should never have got to where you depend on a player you already know is The Suck.

I think I'm going to put my positive Angels talk shtick to rest.

The biggest differences between the 2 teams game-wide were obvious.
1. FAR too many runners left on base
2. 2 Errors
The last nail in the coffin was definitely Fernando Rodney’s lack of clutch ability, or for that matter any true pitching ability at all. Walking like that is just not a good sign.

Question of the day: Where is the good ol’ fundamental “it’s just” (in the words of Sosh) baseball that this team built itself around? It just seems like everybody has been asleep for the past 1 1/2 years now.

Slump buster: Break out videos of the last season of REAL Angels baseball, the ‘09 season and have the team and coaches compare with now. Find out what’s missing in the play style and strategy. I truly don’t know what can help this team, but anything’s worth a try at this point.

Too High in the BMI

I not just saying that to be mean (it’s implied I hate him something righteous).

He doesn’t mean to swing at pitches that high or intentionally have slow bat speed – but his sugar levels are so high from eating bacon wrapped twinkies that it’s a physiological issue which he can’t control.

You can also notice this is in lack of hustle in the outfield, lack of speed grinding out to first, etc.

I think the only solution is for all of us to email Obama’s wife and force her to use Wells as a public posterchild for obesity and put pressure on him to lose weight. And we need to do this fast before the Obama administration and Obamacare collapse under it’s own weight (or Wells weight, whichever comes first).

And yes, medical obesity is considered being 30 pounds over your target weight (or BMI over 30).

I think he might be doubly obese.

the thing that really pisses me off, but doesn’t surprise me, is that Tampon Bay was struggling coming into this series. Then they sweep us. FAIL.

Glad to see Torii extend his league lead in GIDP. Feels good to have a lead in some offensive category.

Also, I had choice seats in F125 and saw Weaver throw shit and go nuts when he got back in the dugout. Did that make it on the broadvast?

I love this team.

by Downing Rules on Jun 8, 2011 11:24 PM PDT reply actions

So what team do you figure will make the biggest run at him in the offseason?

I don’t think even the cowabunga dude weather of SoCal will make him want to deal with another year of wasted pitching excellence on this team.

It’s a shame because when he started out finally getting support at the beginning of the season, I thought “finally!”. The poor guy never seemed to get a break with this offense last year.

And then… the hitters remembered that they suck.

He’s going to want to find a team where he can experience what an offense is and doesn’t waste his starts.

Well, he won't become a free agent until the end of 2012

It’s hard to predict exactly which teams will be the most motivated for first-class pitching that far into the future. But the big-budget clubs in the East are always looking for starter, and they can pretty much guarantee him offensive support. If that’s what he really wants, someone will be there to offer.

This team is on the edge.

You could see it out there tonight. One of two things is going to happen. They are either gonna use their anger, get focused and start winning..or they are about to devolve into a clubhouse wreck, pointing fingers and badmouthing each other. Weaver looked ready to kill someone. I think the yard crew had to go replace the divot from Wells slamming his bat into the ground like Bam Bam. It doesn’t look to me like they have any real clubhouse leadership. Letting 5 veterans go after 2009 was a huge mistake that left a massive leadership vacuum.

by firebird81 on Jun 9, 2011 12:33 AM PDT reply actions

Where are those veterans now?

Darren Oliver: making awesome in Texas.
Chone Figgins: sucking in Seattle.
John Lackey: sucking in Boston.
Vladimir Guerrero: sucking in Baltimore.
Gary Matthews Jr.: sucking on his sofa.

If the Angels had kept them all, they’d be plus one solid reliever and minus 10000 for the rest. No amount of “leadership” would make up for that. The problem isn’t who they let go, it’s who they planned to replace them with.

The funny thing is, having Vlad would actually be a plus for the Angels right now

I would argue that having Abreu as the LF and Vlad as the DH, despite the massive hit in defense would still be better for the Angels because it would mean no Vernon Wells and his albatross of a contract. (And Vlad is still hitting better than Vernon for a lot less money.)

by hunterfan on Jun 9, 2011 5:41 AM PDT up reply actions

Lackey always sucked in Boston. I don’t know what made him think that by putting on their uniform he was going to suddenly pitch well in that park. Vladdy was hotter than hell last year and everywhere he goes the latino players seem to start producing better. And…I’m not totally convinced that Figgy’s performance with Seattle isn’t at least partly because of the environment he plays in…they’ve really mis-managed that guy from the moment he got there.

But, that wasn’t my point, anyway. This team for two years straight has gone thru pretty large transformations. People talk a lot about a rebuilding year….look around you. This team has basically been doing that these past two seasons.

by firebird81 on Jun 9, 2011 9:23 AM PDT up reply actions

Abreu and Hunter aren't veterans?

And at this point, guys like Weaver, Santana, Kendrick and Haren should be considered veterans too. The problem is too many old guys and role players being expected to perform like superstars (or at least everyday starters) in their prime.

He might have still been able to get out of the inning with the two runners at 1st/2nd, but that Jaso play was the backbreaker. That was on Callaspo. Not to mention that odd mound bounce on the Longoria hit.

Feels weird to defend him, but there it is. The offense had plenty of chances, and they only cashed in that one time to tie the game. Not good enough. Bobby gave it his best shot, but that’s as far as it went.

by RedFog on Jun 9, 2011 1:37 AM PDT up reply actions

This is the fallacy of the Wells trade

It will take at least $25m per year to get Pujols; I’m guessing he gets over $28m per when it’s all said and done. To keep Weaver long-term will be at least $18m per. So, is Arte going to keep payroll above $170m?

by mustard_man on Jun 9, 2011 6:16 AM PDT up reply actions

I don’t believe it for a minute. The Wells trade hasn’t affected that, because they were never going to make a serious run at Pujols to begin with. Arte won’t pony up the money and years for one guy that Pujols will demand.

I think there's some rule in baseball that if you can't hit, you have to be able to do things like bunt successfully in exchange for a roster spot.

That must be what Soth was thinking.

Oh wait, no, didn’t Soth say something a couple of weeks ago about how well Mathis was hitting the ball but things just weren’t dropping for hits. Maybe that’s the problem, he asked his power bat to do something a power guy shouldn’t be doing.

Think about it, the guy we shipped off who competed with Mathis for catching time currently has a 127 OPS+, so Mathis must be even better.

I think we have the answer to that fanpost about who should be in the cleanup spot.

Pollyanna is dead. But don't get mad at me, I didn't kill her. Tony Reagins did.

How do you have a runner on second and third with zero outs, and not score?

Just like the Halos did. K. K. K.

Bobby was great last night...

it is a shame he and Weaver were the only ones who were in the game. Did you see Abreu after that 3 rbi double, don’t tell me that guy doesn’t have a desire to win. It is a shame he didn’t get the walkoff home run in the 10th.

Last night, Mrs. red floyd asked me if there was a game, and why wasn't I watching it?

My answer: “If they don’t care, why should I?”

So....

We still have a lot of season left to play. Seattle won’t keep up their success and Texas is a shitty state full of shitty people.

That being said, we’re not out of this yet. We’re also not the Twins for the Nats. It could be worse.

Also, we have some valuable trade chips. I’m hoping there’s a trade out there that will make both teams involved better. At this point, I don’t feel it’s a stretch to imagine Aybar, Callaspo, Kendrick, Trumbo, Wilson, or any of our pitching prospects as all viable people we can move in order to improve.

Here’s to looking forward.

Geren's out

“But it was the rash of injuries and the total lack of offense that led to the current losing streak that spelled the end of his tenure.” Hmm…..

Can Bob Geren be our new hitting coach?
