How is he not an All-Star?

I keep looking at the stats and in wins, WHIP, ERA, K/BB ratio he is top-6 in everything. How did they decide this?? Is there a rule (like only 1 starting pitcher per team) that I am missing?

In the long run men hit only what they aim at. Therefore, though they should fail immediately, they had better aim at something high.

We lost our 7th of 8 on a homestand.

This season turned around June 8th

when Bobby doubled in 3 runs. Even though we lost that game, that was the at-bat when we finally started scoring runs. Aybar tripled in 3 two games later – June 11th – and the Angels won 7-5, scoring more than 3 runs for the first time in 10 games.

It doesn’t appear to me Angel management gives a damn about ROY awards. They seem to prefer the process (with few exceptions) of dipping their toe in the majors, then ankle high, then knee high prior to full baptismal immersion.

By then, they have played too many games to qualify for the award.

by sothball on Jul 10, 2011 3:44 PM PDT up reply actions

Beyond the marketing, I agree.

In the pre-game montage, they still show previous Angel award winners (Cy Young, Batting Champ, etc).

by sothball on Jul 10, 2011 3:38 PM PDT up reply actions

I'm not convinced that Morales' defense exceeds Trumbo's.

The advanced stats are beginning to state the opposite. And I think we should expect impaired defense from Kendrys when he returns.

Another data point: At age 25, with a cumulative 407 plate appearances logged, what did Kendry Morales’ stat line look like?

.253/.302/.435

At age 25, having accumulated plate appearances, Mark Trumbo:

.260/.305/.483

Factor in work ethic, conditioning, and make-up — do we know who will be the better player two years from now?

by Turks Teeth on Jul 10, 2011 3:57 PM PDT up reply actions

Looking at his career stats

makes it look like the Angels were moving him up slowly because of the lack of need on the big club.

By the time he would have made it up last season we were out of the picture, and got his reps in SLC

by eyespy on Jul 10, 2011 4:02 PM PDT up reply actions

There wasn't room, no, and the organization was right to slow walk Trumbo.

His walk and strikeout totals were scary, not in a good way — and they still are.

But it seems increasingly clear that this guy will hit for average and power, low OBP or no.

And we should all start asking ourselves — “compared to what?” — given the folks the Halos have played at first in past seasons, and given that Morales is not OBP king himself (.338 on his career).

Trumbo’s on pace to his 30 HRs in his rookie season. It’s time for us OBP religionists to start thinking about whether we can swallow the salt for that sort of sugar.

by Turks Teeth on Jul 10, 2011 4:11 PM PDT up reply actions

To answer the question, there’s no way to know who will be better in 2 years. Morales may never return to the form we saw in 2009 and last year prior to his injury.

My speculation is if he returns to his anything close to his hitting form, that would be an asset to the team. Where then does he play in the field (unless he’s full time DH)? The only real answer is 1B. That was the position he played prior to the injury. If he was too slow/inexperienced for any other position prior to the injury, he won’t be any better post injury.

So, my guess is he’d be a lock for 1B, which leaves Trumbo without a position. Trumbo can then enhance his value by learning to play an OF position. Scioscia loves guys that make that kind of effort.

The only other options is for one of the 2 to be traded or sent back to AAA.

by sothball on Jul 10, 2011 4:09 PM PDT up reply actions

Barring injury, I don't think the Angels will demote a rookie that hits 30 HRs a season.

Trumbo will probably split time with Morales at 1B, play right field a bit, and Morales will spend a fair amount of time at DH.

2012 is Kendrys’ final year with us, no? I suspect that’ll be a factor as well.

by Turks Teeth on Jul 10, 2011 4:16 PM PDT up reply actions

I’d agree they won’t demote rookie that hits 30 HR’s…IF he hits that many. I will be curious to see if the league adjusts to Trumbo. At the moment, he seems to be ahead of the advance scouts.
Beyond all other considerations, I hope Morales can returns somewhere close to form next year. 1 1/2 – 2 seasons away from the game can make a return to form questionable.

by sothball on Jul 10, 2011 4:23 PM PDT up reply actions

Advanced scouting is so endemic and prevalent now, the league was adjusting to him in May.

He’s had some nice hits off of some very good pitchers of late — and they weren’t cheap. It wasn’t for lack of scouting him, I’m sure.

I don’t want to exaggerate Trumbo’s talent — he could bomb out, sure. But there’ve been some positive trends. 15.5% K rate in June, for example, after a 26.1% K rate in April, and a 23.9% K rate in May.

Those are the trends we want to see.

by Turks Teeth on Jul 10, 2011 4:41 PM PDT up reply actions

Wouldn’t you want to see him play the outfield before you write that?

by sothball on Jul 10, 2011 4:27 PM PDT up reply actions

Played some flawless outfiels in SLC last season

He won’t be an Adam Dunn or Reggie Jackson out there.

Being better than Bobby, or Juan, is all I would look for. And then he could correct his faults whit his stick.

by eyespy on Jul 10, 2011 4:35 PM PDT up reply actions

I don’t see him in the OF, by next year the OF will have Hunter, Wells, Abreu, Bourjos, and Trout (most likely)….if we add Trumbo then that is 6 guys for 4 spots (including DH) and that is too many games on the bench for some of our best players.

Yes, no, maybe

It sucks to be in this predicament.

No other team would want Wells, unless he was almost for free.

I don’t see trading Torii. I’m still pissed that we got rid of O.C. I think when we lots him, we lost that voice in the clubhouse that every team needs. Now Torii might be it. He did make some dumb comments earlier, but they are nowhere to be heard now.

Trout is still young. Could use some more seasoning by the looks of it.

by eyespy on Jul 10, 2011 8:03 PM PDT up reply actions

So does that mean Trout

Doesn’t come up next year? As much as I like what Abreu is doing, we would be foolish not to have move him. Aybar, Kendrick, AC, Izturis or whoever we have can be the #2 batter. Let Hunter bat thirds Wells fourth with KM and TM batting fifth and sixth. We’d finally have some power throughout the line up.

The advanced stats like his defense as well.

0.4 defensive WAR since he came up last year.
+4.8 UZR (8.7 UZR/150) over the same span.

Those UZR numbers count him as the second-best defender at first in the AL (behind Adrian G), and the third best in the MLB.

Folks can be (perhaps rightly) skeptical of UZR after half a season, but it was similar benchmarks that had a lot of Angel fans adjusting their perceptions of Morales’s defense when the stats started telling us to look twice.

by Turks Teeth on Jul 10, 2011 4:07 PM PDT up reply actions

And dWAR, now that I look at it, is based on Chone Smith's Total Zone.

I’ve been hunting for Total Zone numbers, so it’s nice to have two conveniently available takes on defense from free sources.

A few months ago-

I figured the chance of us being in spitting distance of first at the all-star break are about the same as me getting my hair back (been balding since freaking high school, and I’m old enough to have been at the Halo’s first division clinch in 79). Pitching is great to OK, bullpen has seriously improved, batting and slugging are totally improved, and defense is great. I want to see an outfield of Peter and Trout next year. Things are definitely looking up.

In the gameday thread, Jeff wanted Felix to break Trout’s legs? Someone else said, after Trumbo hit the homer today, that “[He] wanted the Mexican with the broken leg back”.
