Sam Miller, OCR: Assessing Vernon Wells’ season so far
With his hallmark thoroughness - spray charts and the works - Sam sketches up six ways to look at Vernon Wells' season so far.
Plenty of Millerisms included, not the least of which is this:
"Last year, Vernon Wells hit .224/.299/.400 away from Rogers Centre. This year, away from Rogers Centre — which is to say, his entire season — Wells is hitting .222/.248/.409. Why, those are virtually the same! I have no idea if this is significant, but it is definitely one way of assessing Vernon Wells’ season".

As in "So far away from performing as was expected" or
“So far from being worth the 86 million he’s being paid”?

He's not worth the $11 million he's been paid...
so far.

It's just an after-the-fact assessment of value to this point.
Your math, though, I can’t figure out :)

How about this:
Well’s WAR is .2 according to this. That puts him right up there with the other “reserves.” So far, TR has spent $11M on a “reserve.” Great.

I didnt do any math, its an expression
Is Vernon only going to be paid $11 million the next 3 years as well? The glass looks mostly empty to me on Veron’s expected production per dollar.
I would expect Vernon, no matter how he plays this year, to play worse over the course of the next 3 years simply because he will be older and slower.
If he is paid “$11 million” by the Angels this year, it will make sense for the Angels to give him a “raise” next year by “doubling his salary” to $20 or $23 million or whatever.
no point.
There’s plenty of baseball left and Vern’s going to be a part of a great season!

I remember johnnyangel101 ripped me a new one for mentioning Wells' road splits earlier this year.
I hope he’s taking it out on Sam now that he’s shown that Wells’ stats away from Rogers Centre last year are roughly identical to his stats away from Rogers Centre now. :)
For the sake of the season
he better continue to improve.
