Are The 2011 Angels Better Than Predicted?
Going into the season I had a gut feeling the Angels were going to be better than they were in 2010. I just wasn't sure how much better. There were many writers, anchors, commentators, fans, etc. who predicted a third place finish due to the Rangers stepping up and not losing much in the offseason; the A's being the "sexy" pick; and of course because the Angels fell flat on their faces in the second half of last season. I knew, coming into 2011, the team had the potential to win 95 games again. But potential isn't enough.
This team is very young. With young players comes development, maturation, and scouting reports. The report on the Angels says to bust them away, away with off speed stuff; classic approach to young inexperienced players.
In the last month and a half, however, the Halos have found ways to win... Wait a minute. Isn't that the old formula? Yes it is. Or is it?
Angels baseball has still not quite materialized this season. That has a lot to do with not having the dynamic leadoff man the team used to have; lack of the franchise center piece that was here for so long; as well as a less dominant back end of the bullpen. Those are the three biggest differences.
The 2008 team that won 100 games had a roster that was almost exactly the same in terms of production. The difference is, once again, that lack of dominance in the bullpen. But is it going to be as much of an issue as the season progresses?
The kids sure are showing signs of maturation right before our eyes. Mark Trumbo is looking better and better at the plater everyday; Peter Bourjos might win a Gold Glove in just his first full season; Jordan Walden has handled the closer role as well as any rookie can; Tyler Chatwood has stopped the bleeding caused by Scott Kazmir, and is proving that the Angels of 2010 might have had a chance just by subtracting Kazmir.
Are the Angels better?
This writer thinks they are. In fact, this writer knows they are. It's just matter of the young players on the field developing into the players they can be, and the veterans providing enough to carry the team. Vernon Wells has stepped up the last two months. Torii Hunter has shown signs but is clearly slowing down at the plate. Still, the young players are the key.
A bat at the deadline will help, as will a dominant arm in the bullpen. But this team needs to improve it's strikeout totals, increase the sacrifice flies, and overall just create more productive outs. The bullpen needs to make bigger pitches late in games. You take away at least four of Walden's blown saves -- leave him with three and that's about average for a good veteran closer, and suddenly the Angels are 2 games ahead of the Rangers. Get those productive outs and we're talking at least a 5 game lead; and that's before even talking about any additions made at the deadline.
Some people might argue, others might just give up, others might just be trolls looking for people to put down. Bottom line is that this team is doing better right now than they were last year. From here on out, however, it is a question of whether or not they can maintain that, or even improve on it.
I guess all we can really do is get behind our team and cheer them on into October. For now, I will leave everyone with a quote to illustrate where I'm coming from: "You've got a gift, Roy. But it's not enough. You got to develop yourself. Rely too much on your gift and... you'll fail."

I think 500+ word blog posts lacking stats in an attempt in self-promoting one's own blog
is worse than predicted.

He must somehow be related to Greyson
Mike Scioscia has zero credibility to get mad at anyone, or anything. He is the reason Jeff Mathis plays baseball.
Perhaps You Missed The Links
to the all the stats you can dream of using to compare this season with last season?
Listen, I can look at stats all day
but if you are writing a blog post, it is of my humble opinion, that you use those stats in someway besides just throwing them out there for perusing. Back your argument up, dude!

I'm Not Even Going To Dignify That
Your first comment was rude to begin with, so I’ll assume your intentions go beyond lecturing me on the use of stats in my blog. So I’ll move on to comments which actually discuss the topic itself.
What topic?
That Angels might be good or they might not? Sounds like a pretty broooooooooad topic, buddy. Hey don’t get on your high horse, alright. If you do, you wont last a second on HH or the rest of the blogosphere. I was just expressing my opinion.
I found your blog post to be uninformative, uninteresting and shameless self-promotion. Just my opinion. Don’t get your Angel Skater Hat in a twist.

I Administer An Angels Site
and I come down hard on trolls who have nothing constructive to say. As a result the site is fun and people have a good time. I think I’ll be fine. =-)
You mean you practice extreme censoring of viewpoints that dissent from your own?
It’s all in the phrasing.

Halo Space is already on the sidebar under the Halosphere btw
Not necessary to promote it again

"I Administer An Angels Site"
Big Fucking Deal. What’s the barrier to entry for that? Something close to, like, ZERO?!? Or is there some Internet Council of Elders to which I have yet to be exposed, which has sent their messenger winging down from Mount Autry and blessed thee as Worthy of Baseball Blogging, granting you the Rod Of Extra Base Hits to protect you forever from a mighty smiting?
Look ChUmLy, the bottom line here is that:
a) you did not state anything informative or insightful,
b) you did not state anything that might provoke thoughtful discourse on your subject,
c) you did not even have the balls to put your own stake in the ground, around which others might gain some point of reference as to who you are and what you think about your own subject of interest.
And your “use” of statistics to frame your lack of position is insipidly pointless. This site must have more than 50,000 direct links to Baseball Reference already, many of them to specific data points or pre-culled data sets, which were used to explicitly direct the reader to the facts supporting a specific claim. Regular readers and posters here at HH are very well aware of Baseball Reference and many use it daiily, so your “link” to your “stats” comes off as monumentally lazy, incredibly stupid, and childishly naive. You might as well “prove” that you have written the next Great American Novel by pointing us all to an English dictionary.
Anybody who would come in to the most popular fan site for Angels baseball, which already does the good deed of trying to send people over to his own work, who then eats up column space here by saying nothing of any material significance while telling the local membership to go look it all up for themselves, and then has the balls to accuse locals of being trolls for objecting to their worthless consumption of browser space on our own site is a jackanape risking a serious kick in the ass all the way back to the Dark Ages.
You are not the owner here. Show some courtesy and be welcomed.
Show some intellect and make a point. Even a wrong one is useful.
Show some courage and take a stand.
Show that you have made an investment in your position first, by doing your own research on your own topic and bringing the results to us.
Show some fortitude by being willing to discuss and debate anything and everything, even beyond your subject.
And, for the love of God, refrain from slandering the locals in their own house.
Sincerely,
Righteous Indignation
P.S. – Take some time to look up the meaning of the word “troll” as it actually applies to Internet behavior. Then spend the rest of the day reflecting on who would REALLY be behaving as the “troll” in the context of this Halos Heaven web site.

Look, I Felt Like I Was Being Accused Of Something I Wasn't Doing
Which was lacking stats in order to self promote.
I took it as being rude because nothing else was said after that in the comment. It was only after the fact that clarifications were made about it being an opinion.
We got off on the wrong foot and I apologize for it turning into a battle.
Btw, I know full well there are several types of trolls. At Halo-Space — which is still under construction and is currently functioning through Facebook — we developed what would be close to a zero tolerance policy against trolls. One of the more common is the “Concern Troll”: the kind that tries to sway a large group of people into believing what they want to believe, positive or negative.
Perhaps I took that over here and I apologize.
I’m trying to get a feel for what my readers will be. Are they mostly well informed or are the majority casual readers who seek out information via the web?
So I’m not claiming my first two posts are good, lol. I’m just getting my feet wet.
Mostly well informed
Your first two posts did nothing to further the knowledge base. Take some time to read the works and fanposts of this site before coming in, guns blazing.

Then I Will Do That
Btw, I came in guns blazing because I believe in putting it out there and seeing what happens. It works for me. Now that I’m more aware, I’ll look for more informative material to write about.
Guns blazing
and it got crushed. Welcome to the next level.
Hopefully you can do like Haren and show us a different look with your 3rd time through the batting order.

Rec’d
A wise man does not need advice and a fool won't take it.
And I said to myself, Is this team better than expected? No, well maybe.
And then I said to myself, you are wrong it is better… psych! This team is not better. HA! Got you again, self, Double Psych! They ARE better! World Series here we come.

And you may say to yourself, "Where is that large automobile?"
If the Halos don't care about the way they play, then why should I?

i predicted that we would be in 1st place by now
so, we are not better than I predicted.
o_O
You Were More Optimistic Than I Was
And I’m one of the most fanatical Angels fans you’ll find out there. I predicted 85-77 to 88-74, based more on better defense, stopping the bleeding caused by Kazmir, and I knew Rodney was going to lose his job to Walden; I think we all did. We could have won the division last year just with those 3 things working. The offense probably would’ve knocked themselves out in the first round though, unless they got hot like the Giants did.
They might be
And they might not be. Do you think they might? I think they might not. It’s possible that they could have possibly been better, but when you consider the possibilities, you have to wonder what could have really been possible in an impossible world. Is the impossible possible? Read my blog.
This Is Kind Of What I Was Going For
I wrote this blog on the fly last night while taking a break from an all-nighter at work. I was trying to raise the question without really answering it for the readers. That’s why I put the poll in there. I hope it was clear.
its also called a "post"
a blog would be Halos Heaven. This would be a blog post. Just sayin’!

dude, I am being constructive...
I am helping you use the correct term so you don’t come off like a idiot.
I also told you that in my “humble opinion” you should use stats besides just linking to them.
Being rude would be calling you a fucking moron and saying nothing else. Wipe that chip off your shoulder, boyo.

You Made An Accusation
That I was lacking stats in order to just self promote. Of course I’m going to look at it differently than just you expressing your opinion.
I’ve never posted on here so I’m getting a feel for what kind of readers I’ll have.
My question is this: Are the majority here well-informed, or are there a lot of casual fans who look to websites for information?
I need to understand this so I know if I need to come up with better topics, or continue providing information that you might already know, but most of the world does not.
Accusing me of self promotion got us off on the wrong foot, but you didn’t realize that so I’m not going to drag this out into a heated exchange on HH.
I apologize for taking it the way I did. I’m not here to cause problems, otherwise I wouldn’t be trying to get my foot in the door here.
This post did nothing to address my concerns about trading for Freddy Freeman.
Official prediction: The Angels will win the AL west this season.
