Angels Stadium Workers Authorize Strike
Apparently negotiations between Arte & Co. + stadium workers not going so well. "It's our money." - A. Moreno
Comments
I don't know what dollar amount they're seeking, but maybe instead of seeking a contract that pays something like $10 per hour, they should seek one that pays $6 per half hour.
Arte hates long-term commitments.

Arte could hire two $6 per hour workers to equal the output of one $12 per hour worker.
It works for pitching.

haha true!
how funny would it be if that happened and then when they went back to work they refused to give me any of the giveaways as I walk through the gate? and vendors “accidentally” spill their sodas all over me while walking by, or chuck peanuts at me as hard as they can. and ushers make sure I don’t sneak into better seats, which I do every game.
damn, I better not do that. those people have some serious control of one of my favorite things in life.

I have zero sympathy for the unions
They price themselves out of the labor market, then bitch when the jobs go elsewhere. In the public sector they give us the hard working people of Caltrans and the DMV. Every Saturday afternoon, the people in my building exchange the mail that was delivered to the wrong mailbox by a union worker — and all the boxes are next to each other.

One anecdote will just earn another.
I know a lot of really skilled union laborers, including my father and grandfather, and I also know a lot of private sector workers are lazy, poorly-skilled and inefficient, but muddle through due to gladhanding and convenient friendships.
It plays both ways. If you’re gonna generalize to all union laborers, you’re directly insulting every male member of my family — everyone of them veterans and union guys, working class dudes that worked themselves to death, frankly.
Generalization is just prejudice. Everything is in the specifics.

The Angels play in a government owned facility, too.
Pollyanna is dead. But don't get mad at me, I didn't kill her. Tony Reagins did.
Arte leases the stadium from Anaheim
His leasehold estate establishes his right to collect revenue as well as his financial obligations. In this case, he is obviously obligated to pay for the cleanup crew.
In Oakland, I believe the stadium authority provides all maintenence to its tenants (been awhile since I lived there) and pays for them. The A’s and Raider have contracts similar to if you and I were to rent a restaurant.
Arte pays the city about $2.5 million a year
While taking in $250 million in revenues. That probably doesn’t even cover the interest payments on the bonds the city took out to pay for the renovations, to say nothing of the services and infrastructure the city has to commit to the facility each year.
The last legal Ponzi
Funny how the second level of the sports stadium ponzi scheme is always that the city benefits from jobs, thus tax revenue, but the people end up begging for raises.
Theres a small little company whose office i can see from my window (aeg) pushing that game on the la city council now. Not very many people are successful in resisting this sensational drug. How can they? There are plenty of cities courting your favorite team with loads of cash. And no one’s even insisting they be good! Ah the glorious Ponzi

So every job they provide should pay for a house, wife, and a couple of kids?
We are talking about 81 home games a year, an exhibition or two, and maybe playoffs. A total of 81-90 working days a year. Even teachers work more than that.
It is a part-time job and should be treated as such.
Where does it say they're looking for more hours or an annual salary instead of higher hourly wages?
$11-$15 per hour is part-time work wage
Hell, just 10 years ago I worked chopping hay outside of Bakersfield for much less than that. Hard labor, 100 degree plus heat.
I just don’t see “Peanuts, get your peanuts here” as a $20 per hour job.
If they can get it, then that's the market.

I'm pro-union
And disagree with the comments above saying, in effect, union workers should be happy to have a job, regardless of what it pays. In general, unions protect workers from corporate abuses. The outcome is far from ideal, and we can all come up with examples of overpaid and under-qualified union workers, but in my opinion that is the exception and not the rule. Without collective bargaining, most workers have no hope of obtaining a fair wage, a safe workplace, insurance, or many of the things that I, among others on this site, take for granted. I do not begrudge any union worker for organizing in favor of what they believe is fair.

Please find me an example of a productive, cost effective union employee
Unions are like medicine. Good for when there was a problem (Industrial Revolution to end of WWII) but becoming toxic once the host is healthy (see: US auto industry and manufacturing 1970s on). If continued the union/medicine will eventually then make the host ill (see California, NJ, NY, etc.) until it eventually kills you (see entire Rust Belt).

I know some really productive union workers from my days in a grocery store
But, compared to workers in non-union shops they are not really cost effective.
Still, it’s unfair for me to lump all union employees in with the SEIU and gov’t employees.
I’ll admit I overstepped a bit.
Unfortunately the need for a union is a lot of myth.
I agree with second half of your post, but have some issue with the 1st. Workers have a right to be outspoken, which is protected under the 1st Amendment. However labor is a commodity like it or not. People also have a right to buy it at what ever price is agreed upon.
All gains by the unions are passed on to the consumer in the form of higher prices. This infact actually hurts the poorer in the community who are forced to pay higher prices or do without some essentials; food, shelter, energy.
The fact that the Federal Reserve inflates every year destroys “real wages” and makes it necessary for labor to keep up with inflation. A hard money system would lead to stronger " real wages" because of a stronger dollar.
Sorry, I forgot this was a baseball site, not a political economy blog.
OK
I’m a productive, cost-effective union-represented employee. A public employee, as well. I forfeit over $100K a year that I could make in private practice in exchange for the security and reasonable working conditions secured by my representatives, and the public reaps the benefit of a skilled, knowledgeable and dedicated worker at a huge discount.
I don't think you can use yourself as an example
I, on the other hand along with many other private engineers, am forfeiting $30k more per year by not working at LADWP. No joke. I choose not to because I believe ceiling is higher in the private.
o_O
So...
… you’re really forfeiting your present $ 30K for higher future wages, then. Meaning, at some point, you would be a cost-effective LADWP employee.

I'll say it: Professional athletes get paid way too much for what they do.
I put my life on the line every day when I go to work for a fraction of what they make. But on the other hand, I don’t hold their salaries against them – more power to them. The players are entitled to every penny they can suck out of the owners. The owners are entitled to raise prices to the fans’ maximum tolerable level.
But, it seems more than fair for the owners to keep their finances in perspective. They shouldn’t squeeze their mimimum-wage workers, who support the organization in hundreds of necessary ways, just to literally throw money down a “Wells.”

I'll admit it, i'm a lazy, over-paid, card carrying union member here.
And while I don’t know everything regarding the SEIU’s negotiations with Arte & Co., I will say this. Every time you hear somebody bitch about unions, they’re non-union. All those jobs that do not provide health-care or retirement bennies (for the most part), non-union. And FYI for those of you not involved in trade or construction, it’s harder to make good money, because so many shops, are now non-union, thanks to the union busting of the 70’s and 80’s. So, just as i’m sure there are just as many non-union lazy asses out there as union ones, I get sick and tired of the portrayal of all of us being the same. From my time working as a state employee BTW, the waste and corruption takes place at the higher levels of management, not amongst cops, nurses, teachers and custodians, or us electricians. You're right Dono.
The hiring of illegal aliens has hurt the industry tremendously. My cousin is also an electrician with the IBEW, and although he and I do not work residential, the majority of contractors that do hire illegals. Food for thought, if you’re getting home repairs and it’s a really cheap job, you may (probably) have hired illegal aliens. BTW, i’m not a SEIU member, and of all the AFL-CIO teamster unions, they’re generally considered the weakest. But the massive hiring of undocumented workers has been done purposely, as a form of union busting.

Ok.. from a former member of SEIU..
I was a member of the same local as the stadium workers when I worked at Disneyland. The union was pretty much useless. I paid them the equivalent of one hour a week (before taxes) for their “wonderful” union services. Yet when I needed those services after being harassed after turning in a co-worker for leaving $50,000 on a counter overnight, I got NO HELP from my union at all!!! I was stressed out and harassed at any of my locations where I could work, and the harassment got so bad that I ended up in the hospital.
I have friends that work at the stadium(yes, we hang out other than at the stadium), and I have asked them if it would be a problem if I crossed the picket line to work at the stadium if they went on strike. And not one of them has a problem with me doing so—they know how much I love the team, but also know that I am unemployed and would do almost ANYTHING to work at the stadium, even as a temporary thing..

Yep, that is the primary complaint of union members-
They will get zero help when it is union vs. union. They just stay out of it if at all possible and when they do side it is generally on the side of the guy with the most seniority. Unions are not there to protect members from each other, they are there to manage labor relations with the management.

The cost of living is much higher in the Bay Area than in Orange County. So, comparing wages between the two areas would be like comparing California housing prices to Oklahoma. I’ve worked for a couple statewide companies and the wages we could hire people for in Southern California wouldn’t even get consideration in NorCal.
