Hard to normally feel bad for a Ranger fan but...R.I.P.
Ugh. I heard about someone falling and dying out in Arlington and assumed drinking, typical douchery, etc.
Then I read the story and feel horrible for his young son and family, and feel bad for Josh Hamilton as well. Well wishes to the family. Throwing balls into the stands is as old as baseball itself, so hopefully nothing changes at that park - although I'm sure Josh can't help but wonder "what if..."
Rest in peace.

I've been tearing up since I heard about it.
Me and some friends are collecting donations around our town. He lived about an hour from me.
Baseball is a funny game...
If you set up something (especially if via PayPal) let us know...
…I’d love to help.
It’s sad that his poor son will grow up and every time he should be watching and enjoying a baseball game like we all do, it will likely be a bittersweet experience.

I should find out all the details tomorrow.

Perhaps the HH community can make a combined contribution to show our condolences and support.
Maybe even some kind of fund raiser during the Vegas week. I’d like to contribute however I can.

Yeah me too
This is shocking to say the least
After all these years the one thing I still want to know is why Figgy wears that stupid band aid!
Signed up there just to offer condolences.
If the Halos don't care about the way they play, then why should I?
For those who are interested
We at Lone Star Ball are attempting to set up something with the Rangers to help the family. We’ll have links and such on our page when everything is settled if any of you are interested in donating.

It kills me that his poor son had to witness it

I feel absolutely sick
This is such a tragedy. A man trying to enjoy a game with his boy, trying to get him a ball…and this. Ugh.
My prayers are with his family, and with Josh Hamilton, who probably feels devastated as well.

Learning about this really took me out of the game tonight
Devastating for that poor little kid and his family. Going to the game with your dad is supposed to be a wonderful memory.
We Want Wilson
Rangers need to close that gap before the next game.
Obviously someone falling there is rare, but once is already too many times. Add some netting, some fencing, something to catch a falling fan to prevent another tragedy like this.
And the A’s announcers obviously need to publicly apologize if they haven’t already.
Exactly.
It sounds so reactionary, but MLB needs to add nets to prevent these sort of incidents. Aesthetically pleasing? Probably not. But they can bubble-wrap the entire stadium for all I care if it happens to save a life.

I missed it...
…and wondered did the A’s announcers say something insensitive (or worse?)
Then I checked and saw a Mark McGuire post:
The announcers surely wish they could have their initial chuckles back, but keep in mind they could not see the fact that he landed on his head.
A very sad night for that family and rangers fans
My heart goes out to them. No one should ever have to worry about dying at a baseball game.
so sad
feel bad for Hamilton after all he’s been through and Conor Jackson is a great kid who I watched in AZ.
Well, I’m not going to sleep tonight….
How can something like this happen? Its just so wrong.
What we've got here is a failure to communicate.

Devistating
Baseball stadiums are places are life, energy and excitement. What a terrible thing for the fans and the organization to deal with. But you got to just feel beyond terrible for the boy. I am sure the Rangers organization will do something for him and his family.
Almost reminds me of NA...

I agree..
I felt a little more sorrow with NA because he was an Angel, but a person is a person and this is tragic.. Especially with the poor kid watching and having to remember all his life

I have that same pain in my gut
that I had one that fateful morning. I felt that when I heard about Brian Stow as well. At least this time is was a pure accident, no criminal villian in this case, not that it probabally matters to his family.
After all these years the one thing I still want to know is why Figgy wears that stupid band aid!
This isn't supposed to happen.
I should hate the Rangers. Hate their fans. Hate their players. But this is a tragic moment that hits so close to home, and we all have to remember at the end of the day, we all are just baseball fans rooting for our team. So God bless you Shannon Stone. My thoughts and prayers go out to the Stone family, Ranger fans, and also Josh Hamilton. Good night.

Sports are never about hate, they're about competition
And so while I might burn up about the White Sox in 05 or the Yankees in 09, at the end of the day it’s just a game, and their fans aren’t that different from anyone else – just people trying to live their lives and enjoy some baseball.
This is a terrible, terrible tragedy. Don’t reach too far for that ball, dads, don’t lean out too far over rails. You’re more important than a piece of horsehide is to your children.

Damn man, thats horrible feel for his family.....condolences to them
whats even more pathetic is some peoples comments on youtube they have no heart whats so ever….and then the As commentators shouldnt laugh at that either

I don't think the A's announcers did anything wrong
Just watched the video..just a terrible accident. Obviously knowing the tragedy that occurred the announcers would take it back..but IMO they weren’t out of line.
yea i see your point

This is my thought as well
It’s insensitive in retrospect, but they had no way of knowing the outcome at the time. If there wound up being a net right below the level of the wall and the guy was fine, it would be all over SportsCenter as a blooper reel.
I still can’t get this terrible feeling out though…that poor kid.

What most touches me is the man's concern for his son while mortally injured
Several of the A’s relievers were waiting to get through the tunnel to get to the bullpen, and they were stopped there while the man was wheeled through.
“They had him on a stretcher and they were carrying him out, and he was saying stuff,” said A’s reliever Brad Ziegler, who was in tears after the team was informed of the man’s death. "He was saying, ‘Please check on my son. I was here with my son,’ and people were saying, ’We’ll check on your son, we’ll make sure he’s OK.’

And they announced recently (listnening to the radio in the background)...
…that he was a fireman.
Spends his time risking his life saving the property and lives of other people and then passes away at a baseball game.
Meanwhile Casey Anthony is soon to make millions via a book or movie deal.
Sometimes this world is one cruel bitch.
Dude it's just wrong to bring up Casey Anthony with this...

Oh my god, that's horrible.
My condolences to the man’s family, especially his poor son who had to watch. Also condolences to Rangers fans and the team, nothing this bad should ever happen at the ballpark.
Yes. Exactly one year and one day ago
He was a firefighter as well. Miraculously survived a 30 foot drop with a fractured skull.

Thank You for your kind words of support in this tragedy. While circumstances between the lines naturally makes us rivals, it is times like these that remind us that in the real world, there is more that unite us than divides us.

We are all fans of baseball
and when tragedies like this happen we can put aside our pride in our teams and feelings of animosity towards one another (no matter how unfounded) and come together to help heal wounds. My condolences to the family and friends, and all those affected by this tragedy.
There are no words that can ease that young boy's pain, as well as that of his family and everyone involved.
This boy lost his father tonight. Those of you who have lost your father’s in adulthood know your loss and pain were probably tempered by the many memories you had with him. This boy is probably far too young to understand or appreciate the times he has had with him. I pray he and his family have the support system in place to get them through this unspeakable tragedy.
Those of you who never knew your fathers (myself included) might feel especially sensitive to what this young boy has witnessed, I know I do. I sometimes go to games and see fathers with their young children and wonder if my father and I would have done the same. It makes me smile to think we might have, yet it saddens me to know that we never had the chance to.
All we can do is pray that someday, this young boy will grow up to appreciate the memories he had with his father, short though they were. Things like this aren’t supposed to happen. Things like this shouldn’t happen. Not at a baseball game, not anywhere.
My response to your letter of February 19, 1976, is - kiss my ass.
Sincerely,
Bill Baxley, Attorney General

So sorry for his family and son. And Josh Hamilton too...hope this doesn't permanently freak him out or anything
Yeah, I was wondering exactly how he views this (not what he is saying externally)...
…because this must reallllllly put a strain on his sobriety.
I’m guessing those in his support group are close to him right now to make sure he stays healthy – both mentally and physically.
Incredibly sad.
The first thing I think about is that I hope the guy had some amazing friends who will step up and take care of this kid, give him strong role models, and take the place of his dad the best they can (I realize it will never be the same…). I’m willing to bet that, being a firefighter, he had those kinds of friends in his life. Sad day in baseball. Sucks.
This is why everyone shouldn't be douchebags.
I don’t know much about him but it sounds like he was a cool dad. Took his kid to ballgames, helped people when they were in trouble, etc. I wish I could have met him. I hope his family and friends remember him that way.
Enjoy yourself, love your family, love your friends, love people you don’t know, be happy.
Do it now.

All I can think about...
…is how perfect that moment must have been. Father and son at a baseball game in July. Home team star tosses that ball up there, and for a moment, how could the world be any more right to that child, that father? For that one second, how is this not one of the greatest days of that child’s young life? And how proud is that dad, to see that ball coming, just out of reach? And then the whole world turns upside down.
Like other fathers here, I find this is just a haunting story to read about. Difficult to think about, impossible NOT to think about.

Such devastating news. My heart goes out to the mans family,
But especially his son. I too, lost my father at a very young age. And I know how difficult it can be, to lose a dad. The only thing I hope and pray for, is that at some point, this young boy, grows into a man, and can remember and cherish the good times with his father, however little the time spent together. I feel for you kiddo. Just typing this has got me thinking about my dad.
YOU DON'T KNOW THE POWER OF THE DARKSIDE.....
Oh Lord...
Please put your Heavenly Angels around that little boy and console him in this time of shocking sadness and senseless tragedy.
Be with the family as well. May Mr Stone rest in peace.
I am also praying for the Rangers organization, all Ranger fans, the A’s pitchers who saw him being wheeled away and also for Josh Hamilton.
Peace everyone.
I love this team.
