nothing is well with wells
First time poster, and I'm sure there are many threads on this topic, but I've just got to ask...
If vernon wells wasn't making $26,642,857, would there be any chance in hell he'd still be in the lineup? Seriously, 355 at bats with a .208 average. They didn't keep Brandon Wood in the lineup this long.
Looking at the stats, only Adam Dunn is batting worse with close to at many at bats. Then again, Adam is making a paltry 12 million dollars.
I've got to think they're just stuck not wanting to wave the white flag at such an obscenely pricey blunder.
I never, ever thought I'd say it, but wells makes me miss gary matthews jr. That is such a terrifying realization.
Also, out of curiosity, what's the reaction from the home crowd when he comes to the plate? Is he greeted by boos? Are there chants for Trout? What's the hometown reaction to such high paid... well, you know.

Too Blessed to Be Stressed
Who needs the stress of the postseason when we are so blessed to have Vernon and see Napoli drop bombs like Dresden in February 1945.
Anyone else think that the 1st AB homer in Toronto was a setup?
Look at the replay … you wilI notice VW tip his cap to the pitcher just as he settles into the batter’s box. He also had an extended “conversation” with Jose Molina during Vern’s standing O, just prior to stepping into the box. Suspicious, I tell ya. Seems fishy to me. Maybe Alex A felt like he owed the Angels since the trade ended up so terribly lopsided and ordered the meatball pitch?
I love this team.
And then he went 0 for 10 to finish out the series.
In the ballpark that he allegedly owns, based on his BA last season.
Yep.

Since no one else is answering this guy's question...
Yes, I think the Angels continue to play Wells because either sitting or releasing him would be admitting they made one of the worst transactions in MLB history.

Good point, let's answer the question ...
At the 10 games I’ve attended this year, fans are indifferent when VW comes to the plate. By the end of the game after 3 consecutiveat bats resulted in popouts on first pitches, people are booing lustily (mainly me).
Adam Dunn is a walk machine compared to VW, but VW has better power numbers. Both are abysmal OPS+’s less than 70!!!!! Woof! But, at $12M, Adam Dunn is a better bargain.
Speaking of dead horses … how is that Napoli guy doing this year? I have no update on his progress/production this year!
I love this team.

Agreed.
Maybe if he sucks even worse towards the end of his time here, they sit him.
But they’ll probably take their time doing that, hoping that they can squeeze enough value out of him to make the trade slightly less disastrous.
I just hope Trout doesn’t end up blocked while that happens, although I could see it happening. Even if they trade Abreu, I have to imagine Morales is guaranteed a starting spot somewhere as long as he’s physically able to play.
Don't boo... Unless we do
At least not in my section. We mostly look around at each other, and make jokes about how this out will come. (when it is Mathis, we just start throwing money down on how many pitches it takes to get him out). Me and my brother mostly just predict his next BA. Usually about a point less than he started the at bat. I sit near left field, so I like to yell at him a lot, because I think he might be able to hear me. At the Angels, Mariners game last week, I was saying how VW was about to get out, and he hits a game winning RBI, and I start joking that now I need VW shirt. Props on being a fan in Brooklyn, I asume you used to live out here.
Why do you come to my park in a Dodger, Yankee, or Sox hat when they aren't even playing? No ,I seriously want to know.
Yep, lived in LA during the Rod Carew years. Still have the baseball cards to prove it.
I have to give the Angel fans props for being polite if they aren’t booing him. That’s probably a far healthier approach.
I just read this, it reminded me of a certain left fielder:

All the Angels need to do is give Wells some time off to rest, the season is long
I’d say give him about 3 .2 years off to rest up
CONGER, CONGER, CONGER !!!
get over it
VW is here to stay through 2014.
Vernon Wells / #10 / LAA / LF 2011-2014
2011 - $23M
2012 - $21M
2013 - $21M
2014 - $21M
To be honest
I’ve only gone to one game all year so I can’t speak to how the fans react to VW. I would typically go to more in a season, but the retaining of Mathis and the Wells trade have really soured me on this team. Yes, I’m still a fan and follow closely, but it is almost depressing to see how much damage Reagins has done to this roster and it gives me no motivation to spend my money to watch it in person.
I still want to see this team win the division and go to the playoffs, because I’m a fan. But because I’m a long time fan who is concerned with the long term health of this team, I would be just fine to see the team fall flat these last two months so that Arte wakes the hell up and makes some wholesale changes, specifically in the decision-making wing of the front office.

We are definitely underachieving with the 4th highest payroll at $140M. Someone in the FO is not doing their job.

This.
And I’d like to see some Napo-smashes this weekend to drive that point home.
Pollyanna is dead. But don't get mad at me, I didn't kill her. Tony Reagins did.
Who do the Rangers play this weekend?
I want a Halos 4-game sweep of the Rangers, 15-4 in each game. The 4 runs are all solo shots by Napoli. Wells goes 0-for-20 in the series with 30 LOBS. Bobby Wilson kills the ball and CYCLES in each game.
I love this team.
by Downing Rules on Aug 15, 2011 11:58 AM PDT up reply actions
Bobby's only opportunity to kill the ball will be during batting practice.
And the only opportunity to cycle during the game will be if they put a stationary bike in the dugout for him while he sits on the bench.

August is about the time Mike gave up on Finley
From mid-August 2005 until the end of that season, Figgins switched between 3B and CF, with Finley and Quinlan “platooning.” DaVanon had a few starts in CF, even Juan Rivera.
Finley, who got off to an atrocious start, showed a little bit of life in May-June-July 2005. But a .143 August was the last straw, and our skipper finally pulled the plug. Vernon is in the midst of a .160 month of August, so the clock is ticking for him. Mathis is hitting .125 this month. Sosh is patient, to a fault, but he HAS made changes when he feels they’re necessary.
I don’t think we’re too far off from Scioscia tweaking the lineup. I could see a de facto platoon with Branyan, with Abreu playing LF while Branyan operates as the DH. Branyan might spell Trumbo here and there, too.
Despite newspaper reports, I can see Scioscia finally reducing Jeff’s playing time, too. Not completely, but giving Bobby and Hank (in September) more starts. I mean, it’s mid-August and Scioscia has to do something.
All that being said, Vernon will be back in spring training, with a fresh start. Unlike Finley and Alfonso, there is no trading partner for Vernon’s contract, except for Johan Santana. Seriously.

Sosh "tweaks" the lineup every day, every year. What would be so different about August 2011?
And if the cause is lost, Sosh could just as easily lock down Mathis in the catcher slot for the balance of the season in order to “get Jeff a chance to take advantage of consistent playing time and re-discover his groove.”
Mike Scioscia has zero credibility to get mad at anyone, or anything. He is the reason Jeff Mathis plays baseball.
I guess what I meant was tweaking the lineup regarding Vernon and Jeff
Scioscia hasn’t really don’t that yet (except for April when Jeff whined). I agree that Mike tweaks the lineup a little every night, but it’s more like rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.

I would equate it more as Sosh at the helm,
searching for as many icebergs named Mathis he can crash into during the same voyage.

Finley wasn't owed another $63 million
The Angels ate about $20 million when they released GMJ, which is only one-third of the amount still due to Wells. Since they’re in for so much money, it may take them a long, long time to finally give up hope on gaining any return from their “investment.” While there’s always a chance Vernon has a mild rebound next season, it looks like his days as a useful player are pretty much over. Still, we’re still going to see him at the plate just about every day for most of the next three years, no matter what.

I don't know whether to cry or break something.
A wise man does not need advice and a fool won't take it.
If your real name is Vernon Wells, try crying while breaking your knee.
Pollyanna is dead. But don't get mad at me, I didn't kill her. Tony Reagins did.
Sadly, you may be right
But at .203, Vernon (or Tony; or Arte) has no argument if Scioscia benches or platoons him at this point. So – this is all on Mike right now. Does he have the courage to sit Vernon?
I could see Scioscia reducing Vernon’s playing time from here on out. But come next April, #10 will be right back in the batting order. And Scioscia will once again give him 400 PA’s to find himself.

What is it going to take for VW to opt out of his contract
Some “We hate Vernon chants”..seriously, what can the fans do? I hate to think so negatively of someone, because I am sure he is a very nice guy; however, the Angels have no chance to win for the next three seasons while his albatross of a contract is in play…
I would love him though if he opted out, and re-signed for 5 mil a year..but it will never happen.
All right, I've been one of the biggest detractors of the trade and Tony Reagins
but I have this weird feeling that VW will be a 2+ WAR player next year. He’ll be embarrassed by this season, and he’ll look for a fresh start. I think he’ll work hard in the offseason and respond to the well-deserved criticism he will receive from a full season of these stats.
Now for what we’re paying him, he should be worth 5 WAR a year, but that ain’t ever happening again, so I can hope for this. As for this year, I’ve nearly given up hope.
