Awesome. Wells is the worst, and trending downward.
As bad as this year has been for Vernon, the other half of the "anti-Wells contract" argument was always that the back-loaded crapola that made his contract garbage will be earned while he is aging out of baseball. Well, folks, it appears that this process has begun.

Didn't somebody in the FO just have to look at his splits?
Is that considered voodoo? Is WiFi available at angel stadium del taco?
There are mistakes.. and then there are MISTAKES.
Arte needs to give this front office an abortion, immediately. I will gladly throw my name into the bucket of hats.. I’ve been known to show up to meetings on time, and I have baseball-reference.com handily bookmarked.
What do you need a fancy suit for, Charlie, you ain't got no job to wear it to.

Tony, get out of my head.

Look at his splits?
Tony isn’t too concerned with the Bill Jameses and sabermetric people.
Pollyanna is dead. But don't get mad at me, I didn't kill her. Tony Reagins did.
Splits don't matter anymore according to Del Taco Tony
and Wells proved it this weekend by sucking at Rogers Field. Wow, and to think, only 3 years, two and a half months more of this. Like a damn prison sentence without the “time off for good conduct” clause. Tony, you sir are a jackass.
CONGER, CONGER, CONGER !!!
I'm waiting for the Point Counter-point Rebuttal from thebigtizzle
While we’re waiting, please enjoy this classic moment from SNL……

Well, I am not innocent here myself. So there shall be no crossing of swords.
Last October, right after the season ended (startign here, where I must have been channeling an inner TR), I was in favor of Wells and posited trading for him as an unsolicited suggestion. I figured that his recent numbers were due to injury and recovery,a nd that he seemed to be coming back. Compared to 7-8 years for Crawford, Wells would have been the cheaper deal for that productivity.
Of course, I didn’t suggest trading away Naps for him. Nor did I expect that the “productivity” level wherein Crawford and Wells compare would be so miserably low.
Once I saw the actual deal that took place, and once I looked hard at the numbers between Wells and Rivera, I changed my mind on Wells immediately. It was kind of a “what the hell was I thinking???” moment.
Mike Scioscia has zero credibility to get mad at anyone, or anything. He is the reason Jeff Mathis plays baseball.
So it's your fault. Thanks for giving Tony the idea.

Any GM who takes his cues from me deserves all the bile that he receives.

Unfortunately, he only produces bile and fans receive it.
In Arte Moreno’s consequences-free world, TR is living the sweet life.

Arte is not ENTIRELY consequence free.
It could very well be that TR is the lowest paid GM in baseball. It appears taht one consequence of earning a higher paycheck while working in the front office for Arte, ends up meaning that you no longer work in the front office for Arte.

Even Halowood is smarter than TR:
As for Vernon Wells,, it would literally take nothing to get him from the Jays. If we took on his contract, they wouldn’t even bother asking for a player in return. He’s cleared waivers each of the past two years I believe. So if we want him, he’s ours, no exchange necessary.
I love this team.

I never agreed with that, even though it is proffered repeatedly.
Claiming a player on the waiver wire does not REQUIRE that the claiming team get the player for merely assuming his contract. That is only 1 possibility out of 3.
Odds are that Anthopoulos would still have asked TR for something back, and we all know how TR would react to such a request.

Wells current stats should be a surprise to no one...
…except Tony Reagins.
A wise man does not need advice and a fool won't take it.
I don't know what we are b^%&*ing about!
Loud Noise!
Vernon Wells / #10 / LAA / LF 2011-2014
2011 - $23M
2012 - $21M
2013 - $21M
2014 - $21M
With Wells, Mathis and Rodney ...
many many loud noises.
I love this team.

They'd never do that.
No one will trade one player for Wells. Ever. Even if we paid 50 million of Wells’ remaining salary, I don’t think anyone would take him.

December 2010 called. They want their quote back.
If the Halos don't care about the way they play, then why should I?
Zito for Wells straight up
Same number of years, a little less money for Zito, possibly a little more left in the tank for Wells.
Battle of the moronic GM’s: Who hangs up first?
Absolutely nobody liked this deal back in January 2011...
… except for Tony Reagins and Lyle Spencer. They both need to be shown the door.

You'd be surprised at the number of people on this web site that liked that deal a lot.
Spend a morning in the archives. It’s all there to bear nit-witness.

Rec'd, though some were suspiciously new people.
I’m surprised there aren’t more of them appearing now to help boost the team’s current Jeff Mathis PR campaign.
Pollyanna is dead. But don't get mad at me, I didn't kill her. Tony Reagins did.
I don't entirely agree with that article
There’s no trend. Vernon fell of a cliff this year.
I was one of those “wait and see” people after the January trade. Wells offered better defense than Abreu or Rivera, and had hit 30 HR’s in a season 3 times. Although I have never agreed with The Trade nor The Contract, I was not against having Wells (the player) on our team. (I preferred the Beltran route FWIW)
Well, it’s August now, and I was wrong. Vernon simply hasn’t done squat all year, save a few home runs. But that’s what keeps me from believing that his ability has completely disappeared. The home runs. Most guys that “lose it” don’t hit, period. Wells still teases us with some pretty big blasts.
Scioscia says the bat speed is still there. Fangraphs says pitcher’s are throwing him the same stuff. And like the article above says, he’s basically swinging at bad pitches. His BABIP is 80 points lower than his career average. His FB rate is way up; his LD rate is way down. But his contact rate is the same.
It still sounds to me like a guy who is trying too hard to impress. His “too blessed to be stressed” statement was a cover up. He’s wound tighter than a knot and the numbers prove it. Wells doesn’t need Hatcher. Wells needs this guy.

I never liked the contract...
But I definitely thought Wells was far more capable of what he is providing. But I also think Wells batting with Kendrys in the line up would have been far more effective.
Bottom line, deal is bad, has always been bad, and Wells isn’t doing anything to help change our minds.
