Grantland Names Angels One of Six Teams "You Don't Want to Face in the Playoffs"
Nice write up by Jonah Keri on how the Scioscia formula (pitching + defense) has been a "secret sauce" for success. Weird to read on the doorstep of our season pretty much ending.
If you aren't familiar, Grantland is a new sports & culture site dedicated to long-form journalism and all things sports fan might be into. Some of the regular contributors include Dave Eggers and Chuck Klosterman. It was started by ESPNer Bill Simmons.... but don't let that deter you.

Are you Beavis or Butthead on this one?
If the Halos don't care about the way they play, then why should I?
Not to worry....at this rate, no one will be facing the Angels in the 2011 play-offs

Unfortunate, but probably true.
What a way to waste 140 million.
YOU DON'T KNOW THE POWER OF THE DARKSIDE.....
And now at this new rate, everyone is really quaking at the prospect of facing the Angels in the 2011 playoffs.
"It is a haunted game in which every player is measured against the ghosts of all who have gone before."
What?
I love both sites but they are pretty different. Don’t think there are any crotch shots on Grantland or blog posts on found ESPN footage of a dude trying to finger a girl in Fenway circa 1997 under her jorts.

in that sense no
but a blog that has everything a sportsfan maybe interested in, but with no way to comment. Unless you facebook, and are inclined to look there.
Maybe not Deadspin, but more like an electronic newspaper.
GRANTLAND
disappointingly old media interested in one-way conversations, but damn interesting old media.
Fine by me. Comments are overrated.
Comments also tend to overpower the actual article. On here, HH is a continual discussion amongst fans so it makes sense but comments aren’t totally a necessity.
Electronic newspaper? I dunno, I look at it like a sports-centric New Yorker.

Agreed.
It’s just a different format. Blogs are perfect for what we do here. Not every piece of written material needs to be soiled or vandalized. One only need to look at most “comments” on the internet following stories to see that if its not a blog dedicated to public commentary, comments should be outright done away with…

That's not entirely true. The Gawker Media comment sections(in this case, Deadspin) are usually hilarious and/or add great commentary to the original article.
Good sites and good writing attract smart people that can add to the post or the community as a whole. Sites that pay no mind to this portion of people are sites that I don’t go to any more.

Yep.
I’ll piggy-back this. I should’ve qualified. You can target certain demos, but once it becomes totally public you can’t avoid the vandalism. You’d like to think they can edit out the stupid stuff, but then that adds other issues. Again, moderator control and policing is probably the difference…

and this is true
What i mean by Electronic newspaper is that you can comment, but you have to out of your way to do so.
Regular newspaper – mail your opinion in
Grantland – go to Facebook and comment
Continual discussions can happen on other websites. If their fanbase sticks around to learn how, and why, commentators come to their opinions.
Originally I was was just stating that it was like Deadspin. Different types of stories with a sports theme base. Which is not necessary, but is provided if you would like to go out of your way having it mixed up with other comments from other stories around the site.
Plus it’s just an extension of espn trying to stress the “e” in their call letters, and be hipsters. Nothing wrong with that. It’s just it is. For now it is new, and when Grantland becomes popular, the four letter network will take over real good.
*edit
Originally I was was just stating that it was like Deadspin. Different types of stories with a sports theme base, but without the comments on the same page as the story. Which is not necessary, but is provided if you would like to go out of your way to state something you can have it mixed up with other comments from other stories around the site.
Should read:
I think Subotimal put it best when he called Grantland "McSweeneysLand"...or something like that; it was funny, just trust me.
But I think of it a lot like Deadspin, too. I actually followed some of it’s hype leading up to the day it went live. I was stoked on it, then the first tastes they gave made me barely ever go back. Longform journalism meant I could read thousands of words about the NY Knicks…or some lame summer movie preview that I, as an avid film buff, found lots of errors and shitty taste in. No thanks. Chuck Klosterman’s piece where he tries to make advanced stats to judge rock bands was one of the dumbest things I’ve ever read, but also a great example of what they TRY to do. I get it, Grantland. I get it.
The last time I went back there, the dude from Hipster Runoff was now writing, albeit in a totally neutered form, about how awesome the Tour De France was/is. Blech.

Some of my friends pointed me there
And I’ve found it hit or miss. I really like Rany Jayazerli. Simmons’ mailbags are usually good for a session on the john. I read that Klosterman piece you referenced and found it terrible. They had someone on talking about being at the World Series of Poker, and if I wasn’t so interested in poker, there’s no chance I would have slogged through that. As it was, I probably shouldn’t have wasted my time on it.
I visit there once or twice a week, click on three or four pieces, and usually like one or two of them. I have no problem with the lack of a comment area. That’s why I come here. Or hang out with friends.

Hipster Runoff is hilarious...
a damn sharp critique of that totally meaningless, pejorative term we throw around.

A true enough writeup.
Nothing really to pick apart.
