What about if we want to resign Haren and Santana?
Think we get a good deal with them now?
Be a Angel Fan till I die... The only good team to come out of Texas is my Dallas Cowboys Baby
How good is "good".
Haren’s deal would have to be at least $13MM per year and Santana’s would have to be at least $12MM per year.
We need some playoff and World Series money.
The comment was interesting in the article Rev linked about CJWilson:
That could be good news for the Rangers, who might have a better shot of resigning him, or it could be bad if he decides to join Weaver in LA with the extra money freed up from Weaver’s apparent hometown discount.
Joe McDonnell's rendition..........
Joe McDonnell reports some of the same plus a lot more in his column about Weaver’s new contract. I think all of us should read this.
Love and loyalty to family and friends is what Jered is all about.
I was particularly interested in information regarding Scott Boras’ reaction and participation in this process. From Reagins in the video, we learn that the team “had to move quickly, as an organization, to get this done”, implying to me that Weaver’s side was making the “latest” first move to which the Angels had to respond quickly. However, the wording of this column makes it seem that the Angels were the aggressors:
“Jered will tell you that (what) we put him through to prepare for this was something that was difficult for him. (Surprisingly) the Angels still wanted to do this during the season, despite all the work we all had to put into getting him ready to make this decision. It takes a lot of time. Jered was up to it, though, because he really wanted to stay home.
I suspect that once Jered finally decided that he wasn’t going anywhere, probably due to his marital plans on top of everything else, he instructed Boras to “get it done”. It seems logical that then Boras contacted the Angels with acceptable terms to a deal which the Angels were going to “get done quickly” before Jered changed his mind.
Boras isn't a stupid man.
He kinda owes the Angels one and Jered wanting to stay here was a good opportunity for that. If I’m Scott Boras I wouldn’t have been thrilled about the tension between one of baseball’s highest payroll teams and my agency. The number of teams with the money to deal with him are few. He didn’t need one of them pissed at him.
Woah! Check this out from Tim Brown:
On the occasion of his great grandchildren’s trust fund, however, Weaver found himself defending the contract, the organization, his agent and a decision – according to sources – reached against a Saturday night deadline set by the club.
Weaver’s choice was to accept the deal or have it withdrawn until the offseason, when the Angels would measure his demands against the likelihood he’d be lost to free agency after 2012 anyway, implying he could be traded.
Evidently, this shindig got started in earnest less than a week ago........
…..about the time the Angels called up Mike Trout and Hank Conger.
The plot thickens……..
In an interview, Weaver said that they had been talking about a month.
Can't believe they're still placing these short bullshit deadlines on players / agents...
Hasn’t this blown up in their faces enough?
I see red people
If it never works again.
It worked the only time that matters to me.

I think the Angels signed Weave in spite of themselves...
I think the only time those deadlines make sense is when you’re trying to sign a free-agent with multiple suitors and you want to prevent them from leveraging your offer against others…. In a sense they could still do it, it just limits the extent to which an offer could be leveraged.
You just described negotiating with Boras.............
and every other decent agent out there that has learned from him and his tactics.
Ugh - this pisses me off
IF TRUE, why and the hell is this team continuing to play these bullshit games? This “take it or leave it” mentality is ineffective long term and will alienate more than it appeases. This is on Arte and TR.

Great article
Boras’s quotes are fascinating. I make jokes about Boras, but I don’t hold anything against him. He is great at what he does and, it seems, really does the best possible job of informing and guiding the decisions of his clients. I am glad that he made this about Weaver and not about himself. Weaver is such a class act. I love that guy.
Actually, I hold one thing against Boras
What the hell was he doing yesterday that was more important than being at Weaver’s press conference??
Not a fair comparison...
In the NBA there is a salary cap with a maximum amount of money a player can make per year. If you’re the best player in the world you’re going to get a max contract. LeBron didn’t go to Miami because he’d make more money (Cleveland also would have given him max money), he did it because he apparently felt he had a better chance to win multiple championships there. I don’t blame him for that. The mistake LeBron made (I actually think it was his idiot manager Maverick Carter) was that ill-conceived special on ESPN where he announced “I’ll be taking my talents to South Beach.” It was a very poor decision as far as marketing his brand and building his image.
I love Weaver too, don’t get me wrong. I just don’t jump on the let’s diss LeBron bus like alot of people…
I hate LeBron because of that ESPN special (among other things)
Yeah, it probably was the brainchild of his agent, but he gave the go-ahead. How much denial do you have to be capable of not to realize that thing was a terrible idea? I’ll be happy if that guy never wins a championship.
Defending maligned chants since 2009
By all reports, James is exactly what he looks like
An arrogant, spoiled child who is as caught up in the life as he is in anything else. If he was as dedicated as Bryant or Jordan, he could be the best player in NBA history. Instead, he’s content to be an excellent player who will likely win a few championships (probably starting next NBA season, whenever that is) but is generally disliked outside of wherever he’s playing.
R.I.P. Nick Adenhart - Always an Angel
Agree and disagree Kernel
Concerning the work ethic and training habits there is admittedly no one in the NBA who trumps Kobe. His dedication as far as practice, workouts and efforts to improve his game are unquestioned. What I do question is your calling James an “arrogant, spoiled child” and then contrasting his workout habits with Kobe, as if that implies Kobe is not an arrogant, spoiled child and LeBron is.
Unlike Kobe LeBron is generally liked by his teammates (I’m talking ex-Cavs here in particular) and it seems he was accepted in Miami as well. Does he have an ego? Of course he does. So does Jered Weaver otherwise he wouldn’t have responded the way he did in Detroit when Guillen pimped his homerun. I’m not saying Weaver’s ego is on the level of a LeBron, but, he does have one. Everyone does. You do.
Much of the recent LeBron hate has been media-fueled in my opinion. What LeBron did was perfectly normal and within his rights. He didn’t demand a trade like other stars have while still under contract. At the end of his deal he simply exercised his choice, his right to go somewhere else. Just because he did so does not make him a bad person. I don’t know him personally, but I will say that I have not heard the same large number of negative anecdotal reports about LeBron’s interpersonal dealings with fans and others that I have about Kobe.
I'm not arguing about his right to go somewhere else.
What pisses me off is the WAY he went somewhere else. Or did you forget about “The Decision” on a certain four-letter-network?
Pure ego-tripping.
If the Halos don't care about the way they play, then why should I?
Yes, I've already stated above that I thought "The Decision" special was a very poor decision.
I also added my assertion that the whole idea, including the format was almost certainly constructed by LeBron’s business manager Maverick Carter. I wouldn’t be surprised if Maverick even gave LeBron a script to read and that comment about “taking my talents to South Beach” was actually thought up by him. In fact, when LeBron delivered that line he looked like he was reading a line of dialogue in a script. It didn’t look like a natural response to a question.
In addition there were reports that Maverick was quite heavy-handed in his dealings with ESPN and was jerking them around alot and making alot of demands in the negotiations. All that aside, I think it is important to remind you that LeBron did not pocket the money from that special but gave to his charity (I believe it was The Boys and Girls Clubs of America).
Could he have done things differently? Certainly. As stated this was most likely driven by his business manager who seems more interested in throwing his own weight around and building his own reputation (ironically it was worked in reverse) than in protecting and building LeBron’s public image and good name.
Is LeBron at least partially to blame for hiring this man, who by most reports was unequipped to do the job? Yeah, I’d say so. Seems to me like a case of a superstar athlete trying hard to “keep it real” by bringing the friends of his youth into his professional life. Sadly, by giving a Maverick Carter this kind of power and authority LeBron has only ended up hurting himself. What started as a somewhat noble idea has turned sour for him, in my opinion. Even if inadvertantly, Maverick has done the opposite of what he was hired to do. Instead of helping LeBron to blossom and to grow into what could and should be the most appealing and marketable name brand in the sports world, Maverick has been largely responsible for a good portion of NBA fandom turning against him.
Even taking LeBron’s shrinkage in the NBA Finals into account, it is Carter’s handling of James’ career that has been the most damaging thing to this man. It has done immeasureable harm to his public image and may take LeBron several years to recover fully from.
Kobe seems to be a pretty flawed human being
Just actually reading about the whole sexual assault case from way back when is pretty shocking. I don’t think there’s any question that he’s probably not the nicest guy. In fact, were I to put fandom aside, I would much rather meet LeBron James and his 1.21 gigawatt smile than Kobe Bryant.
But if I have an athlete pet peeve, it’s players that are great but could be even better. Players who have so much intrinsic talent that while they certainly succeed, and are often very good, they could be legendary.
I don’t hate the guy. ESPN is as much a part of that giant mistake as LeBron was. I just wish he tried harder and put in more work on the court without the drama, theatrics, and sore loser body language.
R.I.P. Nick Adenhart - Always an Angel
Was ANYONE other ESPN and people from Miami pulling for the Heat in the NBA finals?
I was at a bar during one of the games, and everyone was cheering the Mavs.
If the Halos don't care about the way they play, then why should I?
Thats right
IIRC Lebron, Wade, and Bosh pretty much signed the same contract and all 3 left money on the table so all 3 can be on the same team at the same time re-sign Haslem and sign FA Miller. Not to get too much into Heat but Wade left even more money on the table to make this all happen. As a fan of the Heat i couldn’t believe that happened it was a pleasant surprise.
Hmmmm CJ Wilson a possible Angel?
As much as I want to punch him in the face, I wouldn’t mind him an Angel. I mean, CJ Wilson as your number 4 pitcher could be awesome. If the Halos have to spend money to replace Pinero and Kazmir, might as well go for the best or at the very least, make the Yankees and company pay premium money for this douchebag.

One of my great memories at Angels stadium
Was the one time I had seats in that area behind home plate and the visiting player hit an absolute rocket line drive to the right side of the field. Before I even knew what was going on, JT Snow was in the air and his glove had snagged the ball. There were no replays from that seat. My dad missed the play. But I remember and was in complete awe of such amazing split-second defense.
Also, he saves small children.

It doesn't have to happen
but we can make it real difficult for the Rangers. Plus the Yankees and Red Sux will go after him so if we up the price and then bail, we did our job.
Nolan has little authority over it.
Hence the term “free” agent. Figgy went to Seattle, and Arte could do nothing about it. Unless you think Nolan will spend whatever it takes to extend his contract before he hits the market. Wilson sure ain’t giving no hometown discount to TX. In fact, his hometown consideration favors the Angels.

Arte could have told Reagins to offer Figgy more money and more years, which almost certainly would have kept him an Angel.
It would also have put the Angels in an even worse financial position, but technically, he could have done it.

I read that CJ could be looking for $100 million
CJ is a very good pitcher. He is having another very solid year at the front of Texas’s rotation. In my view, however, he is not worth anywhere close to $20 million per year for five years. Just as I did not want to pay Lackey more than the $60 million and 4 years that we offered to him two years ago, I can not imagine paying CJ more than $60 million to be our fourth starter. I hope that Texas does pay him $80 million to 100 million — not a very good chance that he will live up to that kind of contract.
CJ is from Newport Beach, local boy may want to come home and get out of the Texas heat.

I'm curious if this will impact the willingness of future free agents to sign with the Angels
Aside from the FO’s deadline-based negotiating tactics, we’ve recently heard guys like Adrian Beltre say they went to Texas because they felt they had a better chance to win there.
Weaver is now regarded around the league as a legit ace and will be anchoring one of the best rotations in the game along with Haren and Ervin for at least two more seasons. The outfield defense is already stellar because of Bourjos and is about to get even better when Trout becomes a full-time player. We have a knock-out closer and setup man, a first baseman who is a RoY candidate and another who could be an
MVP candidate if he comes back from the DL. We have a solid supporting cast of guys like Kendrick and Aybar. Plus, the Angels play in the nicest climate in the country.
If I’m a big-time player looking for a new contract, after hearing Weaver’s decision, I’m telling my agent to put Anaheim on the short list of places I’d like to go.

This would only hurt for the signing of a top of the line pitcher
unless Jered gives the Okay to sign someone for more, maybe another Boras client. I couldn’t see a number two getting more than WTY from the Halos. Tony would say we have a number one, so you get less, and sign by now because the offer won’t last … oops too late.
Beltre – What was he supposed to say. I came to here because of the, everything is bigger in Texas, payday. The fans would have roasted him hotter than a Sunday afternoon game in Arlington.
But this may change some SoCal local, or even just a California native, into a dreamer. For the chance to win the whole enchilada in front of the family. Wouldn’t it be nice?

I don't think Weavers contract will have much affect on other pitcher's future contracts.
Hometown discounts are not going to become the trend I don’t think. Felix Hernandez’s something of a hometown discount had no effect on Cliff Lee’s deal. It will remain a supply and demand situation and above all where the pitcher wants to play seems to be taking on a greater weight in their decisions. If there is any trend it seems players are shying away from wanting to play for the “Big Fish Bowl” teams like MFY. Money does still matter.
"It's our money," owner Arte Moreno said.
I think it will tighten what I call the second tier market.
Players in the middle of the pack will try the same strategy to lock up guys, but the hometown discount in Jereds case is so unique it will be hard to cross-apply. But the Milwaukees, Atlantas, Detroits will use his deal as a comparable for free agents and re-signs. But the market that is created in free agency amongst the Yankees, Red Sox, Phillies, with the Angels and Rangers behind them takes on a life of its own. I can see Texas going 5/90 for CJ, maybe ATL goes 5/95 (he apparently likes the NL), and then New York will go 6/119. Boston will then jump in…sigh
