Jeff Mathis Abandons Dan Haren in Angels Implosion
Final Score in Baltimore: Orioles 8, Angels 3
Results updated. Chatwood (Over) was the correct answer.
I read somewhere that Jeff Mathis is a winner. The words were a lie. Lyle M. Spencer of mlb.com is a liar. Mathis has made a liar out of a man who does not even understand the game about which he is paid to write. Mathis made a liar out of poor senile Lyle and loser out of Dan Haren and dug the grave on this season a hell of a lot deeper than it was before the first pitch.
But let's not let Mike Scioscia off the hook, as his late-game addition of Hank Conger as catcher yielded the first 2 runs of the game with a King Conger Big Bomber - a monster HR hit in the 9th inning off of Baltimore's über mop Kevin Gregg. Oh, and the inclusion of Vernon Wells in the lineup led to an 0 for 3 night with 4 LOB.
Pretty much summarizes the season. The Rangers Magic Number is 9, could be 8 later tonight and might be zero as early as Wednesday. Do you think this will mean more or less ABs for Mathis and Wells?

I voted Wells, though I gave serious consideration to Mathis because 8 runs is a lot to give up in a game.
I’d never, however, vote for a meaningless pitcher whose performance is practically meaningless to the game. I don’t even know why Haren would be included in this poll.
Arte Went Biblical sounded nice until it was clear it didn't involve sitting the twenty-three million dollar man.
Haren? Against the O's? A loss?
What the fuck?!!!
I woke up in a great mood; I don't know what the hell happened.
Not just a loss,
An ass whoopin’ of a loss. To the Orioles. Playoffs, here we come!

ordinarily true.
but tonight, NO BATS showed up until the youngins got thrown in the 9th inning

Gotta play the kids. If we don't make it with the kids, at least we tried.
Playing the vets is accepting 2nd place. Nobody expects more from Wells/Mathis at this point do they?

I sympathize with you.
Scioscia is an idiot. It is painfully obvious that he is NOT fielding the best players on the roster. Maybe he is TRYING to lose (cue the conspiracy music) – or he is just that much of a moron.
Regardless, he is my favorite member of your team. ;)

The "fate" for this season of Angel baseball wasn't sealed with the Wells/Napoli/Rivera trade...
…but it was close. It became that much closer when the Jays flipped Napoli to your Rangers.
I believe we will look back in 5-10 years to that trade as the worst in the Angels history. There’s almost no upside. It’s a total one way trade. The GM should not be allowed to keep his job for signing off on this abortion of a trade. And if Scioscia was strongly involved, I’d have some fundamental questions for him about his judgement. I don’t think he’s an idiot, but I sure don’t look at him with the same level of esteem.
To overcome this much of a bone-headed trade, we would have needed some fortunate breaks. We got some of those breaks with Trumbo and about 2 decent months with Tyler Chatwood, but those gains were balanced by Pineiro’s 2nd half disappearance, and a mostly ineffective bullpen.
Praying for Seattle to go radioactive on the Rangers today.
If the Rangers win it will start to look really grim.
There is still a chace until elimination.

What a bunch of gutless pussies led by our moronic captain Mike Scioscia.
Lyle Spencer is a douche. We don’t win because of Jeff Mathis, we win in spite of him.
Vernon Wells is the 2005 version of Steve Finley. How much more information do we need to know before we realize he’s worthless? Hopefully we figure it out before 2014.
Goodbye season. I hope Mike Napoli is the World Series MVP.
I've got nothing.
Vernon's not worthless
He’s hit 20+ homers this year, that’s not worthless. Yes, he makes 21 Mil a year, but as i’ve stated before, it’s not his fault baseball salaries are out of control compared to other sports. He got traded to the Angels that’s on the front office, not on him. If he made a “reasonable” 8 Mil a yr, I’m sure HH would be more ambivalent about him. HH is just upset because Napoli was on the other end.
At the end of the day, the Angels will probably have to win all 3 games at the end vs Texas to get in.
This is going to be my team, and we're going to rise together.
-Clipper Darrell
He's also made outs roughly 75% of the time.
Homers are neat, but teams have a finite number of outs. Wells has made a whole bunch of them.
Terry Smith summed up the thought process of the FO/Sosh
“We’ve got this far with Wells, no sense in taking him out of the lineup.”
This is a dumb baseball team, deserving to lose to a smarter, more efficient Ranger club.
What do you need a fancy suit for, Charlie, you ain't got no job to wear it to.

Hunter, Wells & Abreu
I heard him make a similar comment on Angel Talk saying he thinks they should play these guys and let them either succeed or fail with them. That’s definitely the FO mentality. Problem is they’ve done this for 2 seasons now. I wonder if Arte is starting to regret the L/T deal he gave Soth?
by frosse on Sep 16, 2011 11:04 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions
Terry also said
Branyon should not DH bec he’s only batting about .200. He never said anything about the .180 Catcher. I like Terry but he’s a total shill for mgt. He doesn’t want to be the next Rex Hudler and get canned, yet Soth practically has a govt deal which I believe has made him complacent.
by frosse on Sep 16, 2011 11:10 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions
Sort of agree about Sosh
But if the front office does it’s job Mike’s shortcomings wouldn’t be nearly as magnified.
I didn't see the game but how is this on Mathis?
Haren gave up 6 runs against a abysmal Orioles team. I don’t care who the catcher is, that’s a terrible outing.

Because all wins are attributed to Mathis...
…according to MLB’s impeccable beat writer Lyle Spencer, and Mike Scioscia, who kicked Mike Napoli to the curb in favor of Jeff Mathis.
As such, all losses adhere to the catcher as well.
There is no such thing as pitcher responsibility on this club. The catcher dictates the game.
Get with the program. Are you an A’s fan or something?

the captain calls the pitches and the location
haren executed the captain’s plan with ace like precision.
until we can find someone with better fucking intangibles than the current captain of all wins, jeffrey lyle mathis has this team right by the scrote.
Somewhere, right now, Mickey Hatcher is ruining a swing.
by Quinlan's Goofy Swing on Sep 16, 2011 8:48 PM PDT up reply actions
Yes, Haren gave up six runs
but on the Rangers that would have been good enough for a W.
Our problem is that for every nine ABs, we only have seven legitimate chances for a hit. Good God, a contender simply cannot have guys batting .217 and .181 in the lineup! If we don’t make the playoffs, this will be why.
by Seraphan on Sep 16, 2011 8:26 PM PDT reply actions 1 recs
I think Scioscia
has to start taking some more blame at this point. He knows Well, Mathis, and Abreau bring nothing to table offensively. There are better options on the bench.
For a guy who should be an expert on catching
He sure got it wrong by keeping Mathis and unloading Naps. This decision has cost us this season if we finish 2nd. Nap’s mother must have failed the lasagna test.

at least we know how this team responds to must wins against shit opponents
:/
haren actually looked pretty filthy the two innings I saw him, well, other than the lineout to end the 2nd.
guess that was the beginning of the end for mathis’ brilliant game plan.

I think
they need to put Sosh’s fat ass on the hot seat! It’s totally unacceptable! Mathis deserves to be on the Orem Owlz roster and not on ANY major league roster.
Wells needs to either die or sit on the bench! What’s that overpaid oaf going to do?
I blame Mathis for Haren’s crap performance, for me being 100lbs overweight, for not having a GF, and for me still living with my parents (while I’m still in my 30s)!
so far you're living the good life .....back to baseball .
If this was Steinbrenner team , Soth will be in the hot seat right now .
by Ed@northridge on Sep 16, 2011 9:13 PM PDT up reply actions
Arter needs to channel his inner Steinbrenner!
Keep Sosh on his toes! Otherwise, there will be mediocre years ahead!
Our winning streak/run in the standings coincided with
1) Conger and Trout being recalled to the big leagues
2) Scioscia vowing to play said recalled players on a regular basis
3) Scioscia admitting that nonexistent offense from one position is hard to withstand.
Our plateau has coincided with:
1) More Mathis; less Wilson and Conger.
2) Return of underperforming veterans to the lineup on a regular basis
3) Benching of rookies who have carried the team
Just sayin’

To be fair.
Wilson is just as bad as Mathis as far as offense goes. And Soth never really played Conger at all. When he got called up he sat the bench most of the time so that is a moot point. But other than that I agree.

Watching the Dodgers game for lack of anything better to do.
Jamey Carroll has the same dumb walk up song as Mathis. As if the team and the stadium weren’t a bad enough assault on the senses, they have to listen to that as well.

For what it's worth
1st half numbers for Haren in his career: Opponents hit .232/.275/.371 3.19 ERA 1.080 WHIP
2nd half numbers for Haren in his career: Opponents hit .271/.311/.437 4.04 ERA 1.276 WHIP
I thought the picture in the story was some random, typical semi-toothed Texan in an Orioles uniform before I read the caption.
