No Kidding: Yanks Never Wanted Crawford
"New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman admitted Thursday that he feigned interest in Carl Crawford last offseason to drive up the price for the Boston Red Sox to sign the free agent".
Damn! Who'da thought it?
For all those who want to bitch about Arte's not spending wildly, think about it.

A lot of people here supported the team not signing Crawford.
And the biggest criticism on Arte is that he does spend wildly. After failing to get Crawford, he moves forward with an equally stupid idea to trade for Vernon Wells (dumping value while taking on one of the worst contracts in baseball).
This is the least talented $140m team in history. Think about it.
Arte Went Biblical sounded nice until it was clear it didn't involve sitting the twenty-three million dollar man.

I didn't think they spent that much.
I thought they were in the $130m neighborhood. If they topped $140m, then you are correct. Arte found another way to be in second place.

Yep, the Mets spent $142m this year and $149m in '09 according to Cot's.

Is a lot of that incentives or deferred payments?
The salary database on the USA Today site (sourced to the MLB Players Association) has the Mets at just under $119M this season.
It's whatever I saw or maybe misread on Cot's.

Maybe 142 was '10.
That would make sense coming off 149 in ’09.

Almost doesn't count.

SnowHor, not to be argumentative..........
Someone else can get the Matt Welch posted link: The Angels thought they were getting another Torii Hunter at approximately Torii Hunter money over four years.
NO ONE thought VWells would perform as he has.
Just so everyone can have something to stew over, here are the up-to-date numbers of the players involved..
I thought the common consensus was...
The Angels were getting Juan Rivera for approximately Torii Hunter money while giving up Juan Rivera and Mike Napoli.
This bitter pill would go down a little easier if not for the chips Tony gave away.
What do you need a fancy suit for, Charlie, you ain't got no job to wear it to.

Vernon Wells Stats This Year vs. Last Year's Road Stats
Current stat line: 223/.254/.419
2010 road stats: .224/.299/.400
Slightly more power, less walks this year. Should we really have expected better?
Also, you may want to reread that Matt Welch post – that was the absolutely best case scenario, not what we should have reasonably expected. Also, I believe Suboptimal did a great post back then on what we were getting with Vernon Wells.
I can’t wait to see how Tony outdoes himself this fall with the next big splash.

Fixed.
I can’t wait to see how Tony outdoes himself this fall with the next big splash little ripple.
A wise man does not need advice and a fool won't take it.
We got hit my more than a little ripple with VW.
I think big splash was right.

I knew what the stats would say, but I looked at them anyway.
I must enjoy pissing myself off.

Not signing Beltre was huge too.
There is still a chace until elimination.

Not that huge
Adrian Beltre 2011 WAR:4.9 Salary $14 million
Alberto Callaspo 2011 WAR: 4.0 Salary $2 million
Not necessarily.
Beltre is a big bat. Hot Dog has a much better glove.
If the Halos don't care about the way they play, then why should I?
Yeah, I don't think the evidence is exactly there for that conclusion yet.
Beltre UZR (2010, 2011): 11.8, 11.2
Callaspo UZR (2010, 2011): 4.1, 3.8
Beltre, dWAR (2010, 2011): 0.6, 1.5
Callaspo, dWAR (2010, 2011): 1.0, 1.4
What I’m seeing there is some questionable volatility in dWAR — I’d love for Chone Smith to clear that up for us.
Until the picture’s clearer, I’m still pretty convinced that Beltre is the best hot corner glove in the AL.
(Callaspo is a nice little player, but we still need an upgrade at 3rd.)
Baseball Reference dWAR is just crazy about Alberto's glove.
In a way Fangraphs is not. (Though Fangraphs still likes his glove overall at 3B.)
We need Rally Monkey 5 to come over here and explain the diff.
I've Got to Wonder
whether, on this particular team, Beltre would have a much bigger impact by virtue of his ability to hit the ball out of the ballpark. Callaspo certainly has a better OBP, but he doesn’t get very far around the bases. Beltre, on the other hand, goes much farther around when he does get on (and also thereby advancing whatever runners are on farther around than they get with a Callaspo single).
