Turn out the lights.
The Angels are ill-served by a front office that willfully disregards both modern and classic performance measurements when it comes to Jeff Mathis. Astonishing, and nearly unforgiveable.

BOTG: Wells and Mathis: 0 for 6 between them, the only two starters without a hit.
Especially if you add in Mathis pass ball and throwing error.

None of us could rationally think we'd hang around until game 160. Nevertheless it is a cruel ending to the roller coaster ride this season's been
...on the road....
Hanging around this long just to see it blow up is rough
At least when we lose in the the playoffs you get to experience the nirvana of a division or Wild Card title.

I will go to bed dreaming of next year
with Trout, Fleet Pete, and Torii in the OF, Trumbo at first, and Morales as DH
That does seem like a nice dream
Just need Conger behind the dish to make it even better.
It’s odd how much of a better team we could field every night if we just played the best players.

Such a proud club for the past decade
… the front office has quickly turned into the laughing stock of MLB. Arte needs to right this.
Some fans will be satisfied with a second place finish, lamenting the “what ifs” and “if only” throughout the season.
140 Million reasons this club should dominate the west. Pretty disgusted right now.
What do you need a fancy suit for, Charlie, you ain't got no job to wear it to.
Sad part is we had the players to do it
Starting conger and anyone else in place of mathis and wells and this team would have been at least a couple games better off… enough to win something meaningful.

He may have stunk, but Wells is just a steaming pile.
Expensive shit. That’s what the Angels trotted out to LF every night.
Rivera would've just been a bench option and placeholder for Trout.
And with 73 RBIs, he actually was more of a “run producer” than Vernon this season (66) in fewer plate appearances.
Rivera would’ve been a perfectly fine bench piece for a single year with Beltre and Napoli playing daily.
by Turks Teeth on Sep 26, 2011 10:30 PM PDT up reply actions
If Vernon was simply a placeholder, like Rivera was,
I don’t think he could catch as much flak here. He would just be gone in a year, and he wouldn’t cost that much (in this imaginary universe). But he makes way too much money to be any of kind of placeholder, at least in the eyes of the FO, and he was brought in as some sort of “solution” to our hitting woes. It’s baffling.
Truly baffling.
I was really adamant in the offseason that leftfield was truly the least of our problems — I was completely happy to deal with a little defensive softness for part of a season, given the approach of Trout and how much of the field Bourjos covers. I thought, we either stand pat in the OF (let Rivera, Willits and Abreu rotate, and wait for Trout or Jeremy Moore), or go for a one-year rental. Even DeJesus, as much as he underperformed in Oakland, would have done much less damage.
I was really surprised at how controversial that was in the off-season, and how even the front office adamantly viewed LF as our worst hole. And so we filled it with a landmine.
by Turks Teeth on Sep 26, 2011 11:16 PM PDT up reply actions
Well, in the adamants' defense, we didn't imagine Trout would be ready this fast
Rivera being replacement-level is fine as long as the replacement gets here in time. Which, it turned out, he did. A full year of Rivera the way he played in Toronto, and with Trout not quite ready, would have played out differently.

So now that the Angels are officially eliminated
can Sosh stop fooling around hoping Mathis will still get his avg to .175 and finally play Conger???
Conger doesnt look that good either. Just compared to Mathis.
How about compared to say . . Mike Napoli and his 1000 OPS? Or even Miguel Olivo.
by Wally's World on Sep 26, 2011 10:23 PM PDT up reply actions
How about letting him play a whole season
and without all of these mind games about “improving defense” and being yanked in and out of the lineup? how about letting the youngster work with weaver and haren and maybe he’ll have a chance at being the CERA king? how about being given consistent playing time without being benched because the veteran complains about playing time? Feels funny that after the kid hits a pinch-hit HR, he never gets played again. Being punished for being a better offensive player than a defensive player. Like Napoli all over again.
If he won’t ever get a fair chance to compete and unseat Mathis, then just release the poor kid from his misery and trade him for a bag of chips. I’m sure there will be a lot of takers for a young switch-hitting catcher who has lots of potential. Then Soth can finally live and die with Mathis and let Mathis be finally his fall from grace.

Frankly, no catcher looks good under Scioscia.
The last good catcher under Mike was Bengie, and that was a player Mike inherited. Every other catcher has progressively withered under his management.
The things Scioscia said in the press about Conger this season were astonishing. Absolute classless.
Napoli’s liberation in Texas to me stands as dispositive evidence of Scioscia’s critical deficit in catcher mentorship. He’s a liability to young catchers — we should trade Conger sooner rather than later, and bring in a veteran defensive catcher that Scioscia can’t “reform”.

I actually feel sorry for Mathis
Any glimmer of confidence he might have had in himself has been destroyed by Soth. When your boss trots you out there and yanks your butt in the middle of a game like Soth has done to him the past few weeks, he’s publicly embarrassing him, basically telling everyone watching the game “hey you suck and cant hit well enough to play so I’m gonna PH for you.” If he’s really a defensive gem, he should be coming in late in the game to help hold a lead. The best thing for both team and player is to let him join Brandon Wood in Pitt or something like that. Mathis should have been gone end of last season; but, by keeping him a year too long, Soth has dismantled this player just like he did Naps and like he probably will Conger. Soth may have been a great catcher; but, he has trouble managing them.
On more than 1300 other occasions
Scioscia said “I trust you, son” by letting Mathis grab a bat and head out of the dugout. Mathis doesn’t suck because of Scioscia, Scioscia sucks because of Mathis.

There's an odd balance, at least in how I view it,
Of expectations of a $140 million team in a vacuum and the current makeup of the Angels’ roster. A $140 million team should never be described as “overachieving,” but a look at the lineup that Scioscia trotted out every night and you wonder how this team was “still-in-race” in the last week of the season.
I put it more on Reagins right now for the current makeup of the roster, but I also can’t excuse Scioscia for the lineup out there night after night.
Every personnel decision is approved by Scioscia.
Arte has said so, and even Terry Smith reiterated it last night. Reagins presents Mike with ideas, and Mike approves or rejects them. It’s really that simple.

Yeah, like for a start-up in Bangladesh.
Then we can get a GM of cold genius that puts Scioscia on ice.

Has everybody forgotten what the pre Soth days were like? We never bitched like this because…wait for it…we were in the playoffs exactly THREE times in 40 years!!! and, oh by the way, didn’t win an fing series. I know that everyone is diown and frustrated and actibng like armchair quarterbacks, but let’s try not to look too stupid here. Washington won the division and he’s an idiot. Correlation is not causation.
The biggest change between pre-Soth and post-Soth is that the Angels now have one of the top five payrolls in baseball.
We had one beautiful, fluky run in 2002, followed by a devastating 2003 that proved how miraculous that season was, and from 2004 on, Arte Moreno poured money into this club like a fat magic fairy hemorrhaging lucre, much to our benefit. We outspent our rivals in a weak division, and smart free agent acquisitions like Vlad and Colon kept us in the postseason for several years until they were gone.
It’s a different time. Now Texas kicks our asses with 40-50M less in team salary. And it’s not really even close.
I think the burden of proof is heavily on the Scioscia faithful now — this is a manager who made Jeff Mathis majority-time catcher, kicked Napoli to the curb, and bet the farm on Vernon Wells. Those who would stand by him now stand by that record of idiocy as well.
by Turks Teeth on Sep 26, 2011 10:47 PM PDT up reply actions
I'm of two minds re Scioscia
Regarding the management of men, he seems to be singularly gifted. Regarding the evaluation of ability, he seems to be either inept or mulishly contrary. This year, it seems as if he purposefully assembled a mediocre team, just to have the challenge of managing them.
This I think is the source of the “overachieving” idea: independent of payroll cost, the team did rather better than most people expected. As ludicrous as the concept is, I think it’s just the way some of us are coping with this season of bitter disappointments.
As others have said here, I’d dearly love to see the Angels hire a GM who would take care of the personnel decisions himself, and limit Scioscia to that which he does well.
You boys stick around--there'll be turkey and ice cream later!

shoot, I knew I was forgetting something.
I even went back and messed up the spelling to make it more authentic.

Mike can feel free to use Rodney these next couple of games now that they don't mean anything. Shut him up about his lack of playing time.
NO - I never what to see stupid crooked hat again
I know it’s over but I’d still like to win the series against this Tx team. They are going to be resting so many people now. We can win these 2.
Well, at least there's hockey to look forward to
I was hoping for basketball, but even those jobs are leaving overseas. Let’s go Ducks! and Bulldogs! (Gotta throw in the college props)
F.F.F.
"Do you think we need one more...? You think we need one more... Alright we'll get one more"
Beltre with the curbstomp
It’s only appropriate that his home run would be the difference. Failing to sign him in January started the cascade of events that ended with elimination. The Angels’ Brainbust lost this one a long time before the players did.
I’m actually pretty proud of them. Well, some of them. The front-end of the rotation carried a heavy load, and the kids reached beyond expectations. Every player under the age of 30 deserved better than this.
At least Naps didn't hit one out
That would have really sucked.
(I’ll take my victories any way I can get them)
+1
In agreement again. We acquire Beltre and retain Napoli, and this whole season is emphatically different.
It’s been said a million times, but it’s amazing how catastrophic that moment of panic was. It really was the Donnie Moore moment of this generation of the Angels franchise — a chilling plunge into the outer dark — and it didn’t even happen on the field.

You sniffed this one out long before I did
There was still a limit to how much wrong-headedness I could attribute to the management before Black Friday. Now it’s plain as daylight. If Arte doesn’t see it now, then I’ll truly believe that any idiot can become a billionaire in America.

That's my greatest fear about this season
What if he doesn’t see? While I am happy with how well the young guys played and I am excited about the future, I have to question if they didn’t do themselves and us a huge disservice. They didn’t win enough to make the post season, but did they win just enough to save Tony and Jeffy?

I'm sure they'll make the argument
It’s a dumb one, because Texas will still win the division by 6, 8, or 10 games, depending on how Tuesday and Wednesday play out. The fact that the Angels were still alive on September 26 is really just an accident of where the wins and losses fell down on the calendar. Texas was a significantly better team from start to finish.
I actually worry that Arte might find himself trapped by organizational inertia. It’s hard to make big changes. There are contracts, personal feelings, and even the daily routines these guys established will take effort to replace. Arte might try to wait them out and see if they get it together. Who knows how long he’ll wait.
It’s like when you’re stuck in line at the store, but the line next to yours keeps moving. When do you give up and make the switch? In situations like these, people tend to hesitate and end up hurting themselves in the long term.
The team lost the division by eight games, thusfar.
Could be ten if they play the final two like they did tonight.
If Arte is satisfied with that — I agree — he’s the luckiest man in the world. There’s no difficulty he won’t stare down…
…at his shoes to avoid.

As someone who has been an unrepentant Scioscialist
Tonight I eat my own shit sandwich.
I didn’t want Beltre. He’s looked like a future Hall of Famer this year.
I thought the Wells deal was a huge gamble, but kind of liked it because it got rid of Juan Rivera. Also from the standpoint that it so defied conventional wisdom I hoped it would work out. Jesus H, what a disaster. Vernon is Andruw Jones.
Scioscia’s thing with Mathis has baffled and pissed me off, but I have been willing to give Scioscia a ton of leeway with regards to picking his catcher. No more.
Tip of the cap to Subop and Turk for your astute foresight and the shit I’ve given you all season.
I don't take any pleasure in the way things worked out
I also realize there’s a slight chance things could have broken a little differently, and I’d look like an ass right now. At the end of the day, it just sucks to be a fan of a team that misses the playoffs, whether you believed it was likely or not. No hard feelings, dude.
I should also probably stop sticking up for Brad Pitt. The book served a purpose, but that legend is getting out of hand now.
why was he even born.
i honestly thought, if sosh had a brain, that he would bench mathis for the rest of the season but i guess i had to much faith in him. now i really think mike has lost his mind.
conger > mathis
Damn This season is what is it is.
A major cocktease. I am still proud of the team for making it this far. However I am not proud of the gutless September performances. They are young but still. Oh well 2012 could carry new hope. Can’ wait.
The 2011 Angels, the biggest cocktease ever.

And hopefully, Kendrys is good to go.
We need both Trumbo and Kendrys in the line up a majority of the time. But its going to be very crowded… way to go Reagins.

The 2011 Angels season should end with a Dr. Seuss quote
“Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened”
From Jeff Mathis' TOPPS card: "Jeff is a defensive catcher, but he can rake it when it counts." Jeff has a lifetime .199 MLB batting average
Man, the title on the blame of the game poll should be changed to blame of the season
With an effective catcher or a guy who cared about his performance in LF, we might have won the west easily

Even when they won...
did you ever really like this team?
I will always like the Angels
I may not like how they play but I will always like them. Just my opinion.

even when they were winning, it wasnt as fun to watch as the teams of 5-10 years ago.
the bullpen was ugly, hitting was weak and there arent any players you get excited about at the plate. I hope trout changes all this… can he pitch too?

Dear Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim
Now that 2011 is essentially over, let’s discuss 2012. Please give me a reason to change my signature.
Thank you,
red floyd
If the Halos don't care about the way they play, then why should I?
Last night, Sosh said he's already "turned the page" on 2011
Which I interpreted as, “missing the playoffs isn’t my fault, I did absolutely nothing wrong, and I’m not going to change anything next season.”
Sometimes you just have to tip your cap to the rest of the league.
Arte Went Biblical sounded nice until it was clear it didn't involve sitting the twenty-three million dollar man.
Don't worry though, Mathis will be the 2012 Comeback Player of the Year
Actually, I think you have to have past success for that.
So, maybe a participation ribbon?
