This guy, in my non-sabermetric-understanding opinion would make a perfectly reasonable 4th starter next year - our new Joel Pinero. Let Jerome Williams go for the 5th spot and our starters are set.

I suppose a team that has a $21m per year DFA candidate shouldn't balk at a $9m back of the rotation starter.

I agree that Buehrle would make a great addition

But the pitching market is bare with probably Sabathia and CJ Wilson topping out the list and Buehrle is probably the next best option. The cost will be too high. If they can get him for a decent deal, I would love that guy. Our rotation would dominate. With the lack of a 3B available, the Angels may be able to swing for a starting pitcher instead.

I agree

Without CJ or Buerhle, it’s still a pretty sick rotation. I’m bringing back an old angels chant, “We need a power bat! We need a power bat!” And “superstar” is a key word. We need a new Vladdy. If Arte wants to make any money of this team, he can’t skimp on talent. Weaver only pitches every 5th day. He’s not enough to bring in the droves alone. We need Pujols or Fielder. I don’t think we have the chips to make a big trade, so it’s gotta be a free agent.

by Rally Manatee on Sep 27, 2011 2:11 PM PDT up reply actions

We also shouldn't neglect the option of flipping a starter for offense.

Pitching market is thin — Santana has one year and a team option left, and is making 24M+ over that span.

We could pick up a Buehrle or Kuroda for the same span and get a reasonable return for Santana. (The Angels could also explore the Japanese market as well.)

Santana has broken the pattern of off-year collapses this season, but I can’t get past the feeling that he always carries a bit of risk with him.

by Turks Teeth on Sep 27, 2011 7:25 PM PDT up reply actions

I'm allergic to ever trading good starting pitching

It is vanishingly rare that you go through a whole season without having to scrape some serious depth. You’re already one Jered Weaver boogie boarding accident away from having a mediocre rotation as is.

by mattwelch on Sep 28, 2011 3:35 AM PDT up reply actions

CJ Wilson for 5/80

or Mark Buehrle 3/30?

I’ve been in the go after Wilson camp, but I’ve always been a fan of Buehrle, who’s also pitched in a hitter-friendly park with a low WHIP. I also enjoy watching him pitch games as he works fast.

Rarely can a team have too much quality pitching depth, and I believe the Rays are the only team I can think of with 6 legit starters, so would it be worth pushing Richards/Chatwood out? Maybe…

but I think signing one of those two guys does more for this team for the money than most of the other FA’s to be.

by lightupthehalo29 on Sep 27, 2011 2:16 PM PDT up reply actions

Pitching Depth

only goes so far. The Yankees have all of one legitimate starting pitcher, yet cruised to a division title because they score a shitload of runs. On the other hand, despite scoring a shitload of runs, Boston might not make the playoffs because of a lack of starting pitching.

I think the Angels have more than enough starting pitching. They could stand to upgrade the bullpen a bit, but the bottom line is they just don’t score enough runs. They get inadequate production from LF, DH and C. Unless Arte Moreno is willing to eat the contracts of Wells and Abreu, they’re not going to solve that problem in 2012. They’re not going to solve the C problem, either, unless they’re willing to non-tender Mathis. That’s not going to happen.

by jjackflash on Sep 27, 2011 3:19 PM PDT up reply actions

The logical solutions to LF, DH, C

C – Cut Mathis; insert Conger. Automatic upgrade at lower cost.

DH – Morales/Trumbo/Wells/Hunter rotation. Abreu on the bench.

LF – Wells/Trout platoon. If Wells isn’t doing squat come May, then man up and DFA. Trout might actually give us $20+ million worth of production once he’s given the opportunity and makes the right adjustments.

None of this requires the involvement of an outside team, and the only question mark is how Morales’ rehab goes this time. Then again, I’m not the GM, so maybe you’re right about none of it happeneing.

re: your solutions. They’re both simple and obvious….except to management. And that may be the real bugaboo: expecting the current management to correctly identify the problems and implement solutions.

The notion of paying too much for a 4th starter simply beause he's a 4th starter is utter nonsense.

We haven’t won the division the past 2 years. We should make changes that improve our potential to win games and achieve a playoff spot. If that can be done through starting pitching better than through position players, it is worth doing.

As an Angel fan, we don’t have the luxury to create a team that will succeed in October, we need to build a team that first and foremost has the capacity to GET to October. Because once your in the playoffs, anything can happen!

Go look at the 4th and 5th starters on the other playoff teams..

Outside of Philly they are nothing special.

You don’t need 5 good starters to get to the playoffs. Then when you make the playoffs your 4th starter gets 1 start per series and your 5th starter is in the pen.

It makes no sense to go spend more money on starting pitching when we’re clearly at diminishing returns. Go get a bat or 5 dammit.

by Nashdiesel on Sep 27, 2011 2:51 PM PDT reply actions

this team needs 5-10 more wins to get to the post season, plus some to compensate for the potential regression of trumbo, bourjos, callaspo, etc...

whether it comes from amazing pitching or improved hitting, I dont care. But the angels need to add something significant to have a real shot.

by Balls and Strikes on Sep 27, 2011 3:05 PM PDT up reply actions

"If Arte will pay up"

And there’s the key problem. On top of the fact that we already have two more-than-adequate first basemen of our own, either of those guys (Fielder or Pujols) will cost more than Arte has ever signed any player for.

On the other hand, our rotation has two question marks after Santana. The only in-house candidates to fill them are a reclamation project (Williams) who had an okay September, and two rookies who should probably spend another season or so in the minors.

Given these two facts, a pitching acquisition is probably more realistic than anything else.

Solid reasoning, as usual

But whereas we could indeed use another starter, still our offense is substandard. It makes little sense to get a spare tire when you are also short a sparkplug. Sure, every car needs a spare to make sure you get where you’re going, but without a needed sparkplug, you’re not going anywhere.

According to ESPN his agent came out with a statement last week stating he was going to opt out of his contract. He would solve our 3B problem. I would do it if only a 2-3 yr deal. But if that could be done I would also trade Howie (high trade value this year after 18 HRs) for a good/cheap starting pitcher and plug Callaspo at 2B. The drop off from Howie to Callaspo is not that great. We would also save money on a free agent starting pitcher finaly have a legit 3B.

Maybe you guys are right. The main difference is in the power numbers.

Ramirez’s 2011 numbers .306, .360, .506 with 25 HRs & 92 RBIs – 147 games

Callaspo’s 2011 numbers .290, .368, .377 with 10HRs & 56 RBIs – 146 games

by The Mikay on Sep 27, 2011 3:53 PM PDT up reply actions

Not Much Difference

Away from the “Friendly Confines,” Ramirez’s SLG is .458 this year, 100 points below his Wrigley SLG. Callaspo’s road SLG is .436. Ramirez hits a few more HR, and that’s something, but considering that Callaspo is far superior defensively, it’s questionable whether Ramirez would be any kind of upgrade at all.

by jjackflash on Sep 27, 2011 4:19 PM PDT up reply actions

The only way it would make sense

is if we got great value from Callaspo to make up for it in a trade. That way 3b is basically a wash but we gain another player in return (like a closer or a catcher).

Move Hunter behind Trumbo and maybe this offense will be able to keep up with the increased runs allowed by the pitching staff due to no Premium.

Arte Went Biblical sounded nice until it was clear it didn't involve sitting the twenty-three million dollar man.

What do u guys think...

If we trade aybar and Jeremy Moore for Martin prado? U could play Prado anywhere and is just entering his arb years and is getting paid at 3.1. Aybar is getting paid at 3.0 and is at his second arb year and allows Callaspo to play everyday and the opens up a spot for segura to soon play in the bigs. We already have too may outfielders and will give Moore a chance in their outfield while Aybar instantly becomes the starter on the braves at SS. If this somehow happened, I would applaud TR

I will never applaud TR, even if he apologized and selflessly resigned.

Just for kicks, and to maybe start a shitstorm, how about:

Sign Buehrle for 2 years/22M, and send Santana to Boston for Youkilis.

Angels faithful hate Youk and Boston loves him, so it’s improbable as hell. But let’s just say theoretically…

Both have one year and a team option left. Both have nearly identical money left on their contracts. Boston has more offense than they can deal with, but shitty frontline pitching. Angels have the opposite problem. Youk was a bit dinged up this year, but plays 3B well enough not to detract from his bat’s value, and is of course a fine first bagger.

Beyond the optics, what about it as just a value for value trade?

Youk is the type of guy you hate until he's on your team.

Kinda like Jered. I’d be perfectly ok with this. He’s got a good glove and a good bat.
