Wow.
Thought the Red Sox FO understood the game more than to make the manager the scapegoat here.
Not like he didn’t put the best possible team available to him on the field every day like other managers we know.
Other than that, what did he have any control over?

The GM is not going to blame himself.
Vernon Wells 2011 Stats (.218/.248/.412) and 2010 road stats (.224/.299/.400). The front office shouldn't have been surprised.
Chowds are doing it wrong
You’re supposed to blame the scouting director & the athletic trainer for a bad season.
All I need are some tasty waves, a cool buzz, and I'm fine.
It's Entirely Possible
That Francona himself wanted out and asked the team not to pick up the options on his deal. Otherwise, it seems like a rash and foolish move. Francona didn’t sign John Lackey, and didn’t make him have an ERA over 6. Francona didn’t injure Buchholz’s back, as far as I know. The Sox were so desperate for pitching that they were looking into making a deal as recently as this week!
Regardless if he left on his own for was forced out
Francona couldn’t get the team to play at the levels he expected, and he was smart enough to know that his time was past in Boston.
We have Soth saying in the LA Times today that:
"We’ve had issues this season, but I love the nucleus of this club," Manager Mike Scioscia said. "I love the youth, and I love the veterans. I think we’re still championship caliber, with some depth that needs to be added."
Championship caliber?
Where is Arte?
Why is TR still employed by the Angels?
Where is the accountability within baseball operations?

So is Kyle Whittingham!
Future manager? Unfortunately, Whittingham stresses defense, too. But he’d probably realize Mathis is overrated for his glove. And then kick Jeff’s ass.

HA!
I asked my angry Red Sox-fan buddies on facebook if they thought Francona was out; the responses I got were indignant, to say the least. One went so far as to say that I was “clinically insane” for asking the question. Turns out I have epic foresight and prophetic powers!!!

Well I hope Boston pines enough for Soth
to foolishly trade for him. Then he can bring his championship caliber catcher Mathis with him.
Meanwhile, what does it take to get Maddon?
Whats he saying?

I sure hope they do.
They get Soth, we get Tito and we can throw in Hatcher, premium, Abreu and Wells and take back Lackey and Crawford.

Since like they've summed up Soth in less than 3 posts.....

All you guys who shit so much on Scioscia obviously weren't born before 2000
Or if you were, definitely weren’t following the Angels.
This team may have NOT made the playoffs but I think its a damn good feat that they even won 86 games. I did not expect a winning season. I chalk a lot of that, not all of it, but a lot of it up to managing.

I am with you to a certain point.
But as long as he keeps playing mathis and is so freaking loyal to failing veterans, I cant believe he is helping this team more than hurting it.

I'm still a big Scioscia honk, but his Mathis fetish kills me
and the logic that being a part of 2002 somehow buys Scioscia a lifetime exemption from all criticism is just pure idiocy.

it's a lot more than that.
it’s consistently taking a team of league average players to the postseason. What other manager does that?
Gardenhire?
If the Halos don't care about the way they play, then why should I?

Yes!
This! Goddamn, blaming Sosh? Yeah he played Mathis and Wells but he’s not brain dead. 2002? 2009? Hell, this season!? No. If you think Francona > Sciocsia then you’re a total asshole.

THIS is the truth!
I guess it’s cathartic to rant, but in reality, Mike Scioscia is one of the best managers in the game. Mathis and too many chances to aging veterans are his weak spots, but he consistently finds ways to scratch out significantly more wins than anyone expects from this team every single year. Players WANT to play for him. 28 other teams would kill to have him at the helm.
Free agents don't seem to want to play for him.

Marc Normandin can kiss my sweet ass
Dude’s just still butt-hurt that the last team the Sox played in the playoffs was the Angels….who swept their ass.

I saw Theo Epstein on TV last night.
He empatically stated when asked, that “Francona is not to blame for the Red Sox collapse”.
that's because Theo Epstein is to blame.
And he knows it. Mr Sabremetrics was caught with his pants down. Whether he lost his focus or was a fraud the entire time is the big question. He had a massive payroll to deal with and he eventually threw it down the toilet.
i blame bill james

It sounds lie Boston is buying into Beane's philosophy that the manager doesn't matter....
This is a decision they will regret, apparently already have, but that train has left the station. Francona will go to Chicago now and take the White Sox to the postseason for the next 5 years….or better yet, the CUBS.
