Seems both teams got a bit of what they needed. I think Mariners could to an extent afford to give up pitching in exchange for offense since they have a few other good arms. I don’t think it hurts the Skanks though cause they needed Pitching an just got a VERY good one.

The Skanks got a piece they need now.
That is the difference to me. I wonder how good the arm they got back will perform.

I do not like the Yankees acquiring quality pitching. I would rather face Pineda
Willits? Check. Reagins? Check. Mathis? Check
I would rather face pineda during the season than the playoffs

I meant in our division. So yes Not as a NYY in the playoffs
Willits? Check. Reagins? Check. Mathis? Check
I mean I'm not trying to get ahead of myself by shouting out PLAYOFFS
in January but here’s my thinking. If Pineda stays in Seattle he starts against us in realistically 4 out of the 162 games we play, behind a terribul offense. He probably wont keep us out of the playoffs. In New York if we meet in the playoffs he would start 1 or 2 games against us behind a good offense and between him and CC we could be in much bigger trouble.

My answer to these moves.
Sabathia Vs. Weaver. I feel fine.
Nova Vs. Haren. I feel good.
Pineda Vs. Wilson. Scared kid Vs. 1/2 ace with a chip on his shoulder. I feel good.
and just for who’re left sake… Burnett or ? Vs. Santana. Feel pretty good.
My only fear is that all of Derdick Jeters jump throws from the middle infield will blind our boys with their all time glory and we’ll wilt in that imperial light.

If the Halos don't care about the way they play, then why should I?

Prince Fielder to the Yankees
within a week.
"DOV all the way

Why?
Montero plays a different role, right? And this deal doesn’t cost them any money, so there should be room for Prince.
In the long run men hit only what they aim at. Therefore, though they should fail immediately, they had better aim at something high.

6:51pm: The deal is Pineda and Jose Campos for Montero and Hector Noesi, a source tells MLB.com's Greg Johns (Twitter link).
Campos is a 18 year old with pretty awesome numbers in low A ball.
Noesi is a 24 year old with pretty much the same numbers who appeared in some Yankees games last year. Walks more dudes.

According to Kevin Goldstein from BP...
‘Jose Campos was No. 5 on my Mariners prospect list. 19 yo Venezuelan with power frame, power stuff, huge upside, going to take time.’
Campos' walk numbers are impressive
Even more so is the fact he just does not give up long balls….. well so far.

I don’t really know anything about Noesi… I just think it would be funny
by WhatShouldIThrowToday? on Jan 13, 2012 5:26 PM PST reply actions
idk. Im not sure how Noesi does as a starter only started 2 games last year. Pineda may run into trouble cause although he did very good as a rookie he has a HR rate that is very concerning to me. He allowed 18 HR last year and is going to a very HR friendly park. (exactly half were at home and half were away games) but still a concern when you give up so many HR.

How? His Brandon Wood-esque slash line
.227 .316 .385
It’s good that he can take a pitch, but when he’s not watching the ball land in the catcher’s glove – the results are not that impressive thus far.
"When my mother was pregnant with me, they did an ultrasound and found she was having twins. When they did another ultrasound a few weeks later, they discovered that I had adsorbed the other fetus. Do I regret this? No, I believe his tissue has made me stronger. I now have the strength of a grown man and a little baby."
I get that his BA is low
And that his power is not showing up (but he’s playing in SEA, so…)
But Wood’s slash line looked like: .146/.174/.208
And Smoak’s minor league career is more impressive than Wood’s.

I like this trade more for the Yanks
Thought the Mariners could have gotten more for Pineda and Campos. The Pads got more for Latos and the Yanks will have more years of control for Pineda.
Seems like a fair trade.
Pineda was great for 2 months and Montero for 2 weeks. Meh. They’re both still just good prospects.
Now let’s hope they crap out now that more is expected of each.
WHo do you think won the trade?

M's
five year bet – $100 per WAR differnece between the two. I take Montero and will make at least $300
Only because WAR doesn't do a great job of comparing the relative merits of pitchers and batters...
…if I gave you the option of either Jacoby Ellsbury or Cole Hamels AND Tim Lincecum, you’d choose the 2 pitchers in a heartbeat, but Ellsbury on his own had a greater fWAR.
If we take Montero for Pineda as a straight swap, the way I’d look at it is first of all which team does better in the immediate future in terms of their ability to shore up an obvious weakness. That would be the Yankees – their rotation is now a weapon, I think Pineda is going to be a much better pitcher than you do. The Mariners, on the other hand, still can’t hit for shit.
Secondly, if you look at the hauls that young pitchers have been giving up this summer, the Mariners return is one partially proven, albeit higly thought of, hitter who probably won’t stick at catcher. Other traded arms, Latos for instance, have provided much more in return.
Thirdly they’re the Mariners and they always lose.
If I’d been the Mariners, I might have given up Felix for the rumoured offer of Montero, Banuelos and Betances & A.N.Other, flipped the young arms in search of more fire-power, and used the extra cash to make a run at Fielder. Their rotation would still have been a strength, but they’d have been able to add maybe three decent to very good bats, which is probably their minimum requirement.
I see red people
I'm disagreeing here. I think the jury's out on Pineda
He’s a two pitch pitcher that had a GREAT swing and miss ratio. But while his WHIP was good all year, his ERA balooned after the first two months and he could not get a win in his last seven starts. I know, I know Mariners offense blows, but his ERA ballooned to 4+ after the AS break and he is a right handed fly ball pitcher in a hitter’s park with short corners.
Only 3 NYY starters have had positive fly ball ratios in the new stadium and it didn’y turn out well for them. NY eats young pitchers for breakfast, even good ones (see Vazquez, J).
Remember this phrase — “It is high, it is far…”
Well, come see a fat old man some time!
I agree that Yankee stadium might not be the best stadium for him..
… his fly ball tendencies are going to be a concern, but his home/road splits were pretty even and for a rookie, his first season was pretty impressive, especially k/9 and k/bb. If he builds on that start, they’ll be pretty well set.
I suppose from the perspective that there are a number of opinions as to who did better out of the trade, you can conclude it must be relatively well matched with what we know at the moment. And since I really didn’t see a lot of him last year (those 7.30pm west coast starts don’t play so well in London) outside of highlights, I’ll defer to your judgement.
Nevertheless, irrespective of whether or not Pineda’s profile plays well in that stadium, don’t you think Seattle could have got more bang for their buck with the trade elsewhere? Seems like a small haul comparative to other young pitchers on the move this winter.
And as I said before, I still think they could have done better things for that ball-club and improved it more decisively by trading Hernandez, but Zdu%!?&@4nik would have been lynched by the fans.
I see red people
I don't know, but Montero was ranked as the 3d best prospect in baseball
(you know who the other two are) and the guy can rake. His OPS in the minors was .800+ and for his 69 ab in the show it was close to 1.000. Pitchers are notoriously inconsistent and they go down on a regular basis. The only way I trade a major league ready position prospect like Montero (think Trout) is for a pitcher who has been consistent AND healthy for a number of years. Pineda wasn’t even consistent for one season. I wouldn’t have pulled the trigger if I were the NYY. I think they sold short. Sign Kuroda and Jackson and keep Montero. Or go after Gio. But WTF, not my team and I think sooner or later, the aged wine of the NYY offense will turn to vinegar and Pineda pitching in the Stadium may be a joy to behold.
Well, come see a fat old man some time!
by Moondoggy on Jan 14, 2012 6:29 AM PST up reply actions 1 recs
I gotta go with Moondoggy on this one
The only thing I wonder about is if Cashman’s spider-sense began to tingle with Montero, and began to believe that he wouldn’t live up to the hype. Another “can’t-miss” prospect who matriculated with great expectations to the other NY franchise was Lastings Milledge, and I think he is now handling bags on a tarmac somewhere for Frontier Airlines. He went from being an easy chip shot to the green to being a 3-stroke penalty in the water.
Yes, Cashman said all the right things about Montero, continuing to compare him to a nuevo Miguel Cabrera, but I don’t see the point in trading a prospect whom one sincerely believes he will develop into Miguel Cabrera, unless it is Felix—not Pineda—who is coming in exchange.
Obviously, there are several years of baseball to play before this deal can get the winner and loser tags assigned, but my snap judgement is that the Mariners got the better end of the deal. Montero, Smoak and Ackley all in the same lineup? That is a nucleus around which to build a team. Oakland, I am sure, can’t wait until the Astros get added to the AL West, because the Ms just vaulted past them.

I would love to see Smoak blossom in 2012 for the Mariners (in any game not played against the Angels), because he was the guy the Rangers gave up for Cliff Lee. That would be some high-sodium insult to rub into the Rangers’ injury if Mitch Moreland doesn’t develop as Ryan expects him to.

Just figured after Kaz and Pinata ...
the management has shown the ability to DFA or limit the exposure to overhyped but bad pitching. They have now shown the ability to do that with field players much though (Mathis and Wells, for example) while they were on the team. Best way it to ship them out.

I was just coming here to post this.
DO IT! If it is straight up, Burnett only has 2 years $33M left. We could use a 6th starter and being free from the extra years and money on the VW deal. VW might be decent in that small park and Burnett might be decent in the AL West and pitching in Anaheim.
Nice idea, but...
There are a couple of problems with the plan:
° Wells still has a no-trade clause in his deal, which has him signed for $21M per year through 2014.
° Burnett has a limited NTC (he specifies 10 teams he won’t play for) and is signed for $16.5M for 2012 and 2013.
° The Yankees are (don’t laugh as you read this) adhering to a budget, and they won’t eat most of the salary to trade Burnett (such as to the Pirates, who expressed interest).
Therefore, there is no financial upside to the Yankees if they swap Wells for Burnett straight-up, since they’d be taking on MORE financial responsibility, not less. And if the Angels kick in cash to mitigate the difference, it would be about the same as if Wells was still on the payroll, albeit with a hole in LF for Trout to swim in.
Moreover, we don’t know the identity of the 10 teams Burnett won’t accept a trade to, but I imagine they’re the teams in the Pacific and Mountain time zones; Burnett’s wife won’t fly, and so she must take a limo to the games to see him play (there was a clause in his Blue Jays deal which paid for 8 round-trip limo rides for her from their home in MD).
And, finally, it doesn’t seem likely that AJ Burnett, even if he played for free, would be an upgrade in the #5 slot over Jerome (Don’t Call Me “Jeremy”) Williams; hell, I don’t know if he’d be an upgrade over Sean O’Sullivan. Burnett has regressed horribly over the past few seasons, and I don’t think Butcher would be any more successful putting him back together than he was with Kazmir.
I think reality is conspiring to derail your scheme.

Am I crazy? Did nobody see Pineda in the second half?
I had him in fantasy and he went from unhittable to un-playable.
He’s leaving a weak division in a pitchers park with great defense for YANKEE STADIUM, the Red Sox, Blue Jays, Rays, etc.
Pineda is good….but Montero looks like he could be a legit #3 or 4 hitter.
Big win for Mariners in my opinion from a risk/reward standpoint.
