Dipoto keeps working his magic
Sign Aybar and completely bypass the grueling arbitration process this season. Perfectly reasonable deal for Callaspo and hopefully silences those (both here and the local media) who are desperate for more power at third.

It's good to have some "budget" Infiedlers that are productive
Not sure if Alberto is better that replacement player level, but at 3 mill, he’s still reasonable. After the crazy Pujols siging, wasting money signing a marginally better 3B to a long term deal would be the worse thing that could happen.
"After the first six minutes I was heavily winded"-Andrew Bynum
Are there better 3B-men? Yes. Are there better hitting 3B-men? Yes.
But Callaspo was a 3.6 WAR player last year. Those don’t exactly grow on trees. He’s above-average defensively, gets on base. I don’t get the dislike for him among some on this board.
He’s definitely better than a replacement player.
More Howie please...
he doesn't hit 500 million HRs
therefore he sucks

I think I had a protracted argument in a game thread this year
when I had the audacity to suggest that Callaspo was a valuable member of our team.
Solid defender, 4.5 WAR, .366 OBP, and a 111 OPS+.
And he’s ours.
For Sean O’Sullivan.
And ours for another year.
For $3 million.
I’m sold.

I think people on HH are coming around on the 'Berto...
I heard something last year about how his strike out rate is one of the lowest in baseball…
His baserunning is atrocious. Otherwise, love him.

Never noticed on the base running
but he was 8 for 9 on SBs last year…so at least he was opportunistic.

That's good...
My critique is purely observational. Watched probably 80-100 games last year. Felt like he was always making silly base-running gaffes.

I felt the same way
Between him and Izturis, they had the baserunning blunders department covered.
Otherwise, I really like Callaspo. Solid defense, good OBP, low strikeouts. He’s not a prototypical leadoff hitter, but I’d really like him there or in the 2 spot.
Defending maligned chants since 2009
Maybe my memory is failing me, but I don't remember Izturis being a bad baserunner last year
I think Torii was the master of the baserunning blunders on the 2011 Angels though.
my only criticism of AC last year was that he was often batting 6th and not driving in runs
then again, he had VW popping out to third base hitting in front of him.
As a number 2 hitter or number 8 or number 9 hitter, he would be good.

He batted .292 with RISP, so maybe he didn't have enough opportunities
At least his RISP was better than that loser catcher we traded last winter. I’m still glad we traded what’s-his-name and his .182 RISP ass.

reply fail, sorry, he had 2 RBIs in July in 79 at-bats despite a .329 average during that month
he only had 4 RBIs in June in 60 at-bats (batting only .200 for that month). Thus, six RBI’s in two months (139 at bats) from the team’s third baseman and primary #6 hitter is what struck me as him not being a run producer but the RISP data shows that he did not have a lot of opportunity.
In 2012, celebrating the 10th Anniversary of the Angel's First World Championship
interesting
I wouldn’t mind him in the #2 spot, mainly because of his OBP and low K rate. It seems many have already given the 2 slot to Howie, but I’m not sold on that quite yet.

he only had 113 at-bats with runners in scoring position out of 475 at-bats (23.7%)
then again, Nelson Cruz primarily batting 6th for Texas had only a slightly higher 122 opportunities with runners in scoring position in 475 at-bats (25.6%) and Cruz hit .328 in those circumstances also finishing with 29 homers and 87 RBIs. So I think power still matters from a number 6 hitter. I don’t think it is AC’s fault that he was asked to hit #6.

DP's from Tori, and Pop-Ups from Vern
would shut down your opportunities real quick. Alberto probably started off a lot on innings last season.(*no facts, links, or stats, to back that last statement up)
Vernon Wells
was actually a somewhat respectable .252/.306/.450 last year with RISP.

SEE!?!?
Napoli couldn’t hit with RISP in 2010. Useless! Tony stole Vernon because the Jays (and the Rangers) didn’t value RISP like we do! And we were able to dump our RISP sinkhole in the process. Genius!
I wonder what goes through Jerry’s mind when Mike starts into his RISP2 discourse?
By the way, for those who care, Napoli batted .372/.486/.744 with RISP last year. He amassed 50(!!) RBI’s in only 86 AB’s. Crazy.

23% of Napoli's at-bats were with runners in scoring position and yes, 50 RBIs in those 89 at-bats
In 2012, celebrating the 10th Anniversary of the Angel's First World Championship
yeah but compare that to his 2010 numbers with RISP...
and then scratch your head and expect a regression this year.

Or realize judging players on RISP is pretty dumb.
After this off-season, I have no recollection of this Del Ninja character we used to discuss.
Nice. I'll take it and hi 3.6 WAR...
his .366 OBP last year and his 7.6% lifetime k-rate.

solid
if he played any other position besides 3B, people would love this guy.
I’m guessing 2012 will be the year Trumbo serves as a swingman, playing a little 1B to spell Pujols, a little 3B here and there (only when absolutely necessary), share DH with Morales (if healthy), and spell the corner outfielders here and there.
Interesting situation for him.
Could be good experience and good for his development and versatility.
Also sounds like a lot of fun.
I think you could probably put Alberto in at SS or 2B in a pinch and he would be just fine.

Didn't he use to be a 2B-man?

Alberto Callaspo is what separates real Angel fans from the bandwagoners
By this I mean, if you asked Joe Schmo from the OC who Alberto Callaspo is, he’d have no idea.
I like keeping him on. He’s an elitism test.
