Around SBN: Win or Lose, Boston Celtics' New Big 3 Era A Success

Just in case you were wondering with all the news going on, MLB didn't go dark today because the Commissioner's Office has pumped about $1.5 million into congressional lobbying and campaign financing over the last two election cycles, with the distribution titled toward legislators friendly to the unpopular legislation. MLB is also listed as one of SOPA/PIPA's official supporters.

Angels Baseball has not made any publicly disclosed contributions to an elected federal official, although Arte recently gave $2,500 each to Mitt Romney and Matt Salmon, a Republican candidate for Arizona's 6th. He probably spent more lobbying CJ Wilson's agent.

Does this really surprise anyone?

MLB is part of Big Media

If the Halos don't care about the way they play, then why should I?

by red floyd on Jan 18, 2012 6:53 PM PST reply actions

I'm not sure why MLB feels so threatened

They’re much less vulnerable to piracy than the rest of Big Content, just by the nature of their product. People only care about sporting events while they’re actually being broadcast, after that, the content is much less valuable. Plus, the people who end up streaming an event online are often the people who couldn’t view it legally even if they wanted to (thanks, MLB.TV blackout policy!). I can’t imagine they’re losing much business over it.

by eyespy on Jan 19, 2012 12:58 PM PST up reply actions

I'm guilty of streaming sports broadcasts (not MLB)

And it’s because I can’t get the games legally.

Maybe if they put more thought into making their product more readily available….

Ridiculous

How does it even make sense?

Shocking

For what it’s worth, SB Nation is standing against. I’d imagine the entire network (including HH) would be pretty screwed under either of these bills.

Crap like this makes me consider giving up on sports entirely.

The problem with SOPA isn’t that it’s trying to restrict our ability to steal content. It’s in the specific ways it’s supposedly trying to restrict our ability to steal content.

Express Written Consent

Why do we even know these words? Baseball enjoys an anti-trust exemption and supports censorship in order to protect it’s assets. SOPA for MLB is about securing the rights to exclusive broadcast in foreign countries via the internet(AKA a monopoly). Free speech and freedom of thought are but a stepping stone to the revenue goals of MLB.

That being said……how’s Trumbo doing?

I've probably signed a dozen petitions on these bills and some worse ones in the past 3-4 months

Maybe this one will actually be paid attention to by congress…until they come back 6 months from now with a slightly re-worded bill with a cool new name like I-BONER, backed by the same interest groups.

Basically it puts politicians and public service beaurocrats in charge of internet content

Would you want a DMV worker or airport security worker deciding what content you can access on the internet?

THAT'S EXACTLY RIGHT!

That’s the intent from the git-go.

Politicians trying to CONTROL YOUR LIVES.

After a long time of futility, the internet has finally honed a very good model for making money. Ergo, carnivorous politicians have decided this is the time to make their move. MOVE IN. TAKE OVER. CLAIM IT AS THEIR OWN DOMAIN FOREVERMORE.

Once a precedent has been established, it’s only a matter of time before restrictions, AND TAXES, creep and abound.

Thankfully, for the time being, opposition voices are being heard.

Ask a Chinese or North Korean person what their internet access is like

Eventually that’s what either of these bills would probably lead to here.

Obama has vowed to veto these bills should they pass both houses

Ain’t gonna happen, not for a while at least. And even if Republicans win all three branches next fall, I have a hard time seeing these bills turn into laws. People love their youtube too much to let the internet become just another version of cable television.

Thanks for the fanshot. I was wondering about this legislation and MLB/Angels/HH. Seems like battle lines are drawn. Bloggers against the sport they love and even their own teams. No, not against the teams and sport, against the current ruling mechanisms. They are the feudal lords, trying to hand onto power. We are the serfs (maybe surfs in SC), fed up with the bullshit. The internet’s been a revolution. These laws are attempts to restore the old powers. If history teaches us anything, it’s that you can’t undo a revolution. You can smash it violently, but you can never bring it back to where things were.

What do republicans have to do with it???

You DO realize it has bi-partisan support and some of it’s harshest critics ARE republicans, right?

by firebird81 on Jan 19, 2012 8:25 AM PST up reply actions

They'll oppose it until the wording is right

Then when they have it full of total control, and as some heavy pork on another bill, will Barack will sign it into law. Probably sometime next December when they extend the budget for another month, before shutting down the Fed Government. You know he/they can’t do it before the Election.

Obama Administration?

Try Hedley Lamar Smith, R from Texas. and Patrick Leahy D from Vermont.

The Congress is going to do what they usually do….wait til something important is on the table and bury it in that bill.

Who knows what Arte, or anyone else like him, might be donating to Super PACs that support their desired puppet.

Campaign Donations

Just because Arte gave money to politicians doesn’t mean that Arte or those policticians support SOPA.

And it is spelled ‘sopapilla’.

by Barca on Jan 19, 2012 9:23 AM PST reply actions

I never implied that he did

It’s not news to anyone that Arte is a conservative. He’s contributed a remarkably small amount to election funds given his means, but that doesn’t have anything to do with SOPA.
