I'm OK with it if it's 1 yr $1 Million
Last Year for the Yanks he had:
BABIP .282
HR/9 .080
BB/9 .321
K/9 6.27
Those numbers are all very close to league avgerage.
His xFIP is 4.15 which suggests he had help from his defense to finish the season with a 2.09 ERA.
He earned $650k year.
2.09 ERA is good enough for me.
We have a much better defense than the Skanks, and he pitched well in an extreme hitter’s park. If anything, you could argue he’d pitch BETTER here.
He’s getting old though…

Last year I believe he also had a 50% ground ball rate as well.

This
is what helped him the most, but still I’d be scared he ends up closer to a 4.00 than a 2.00.

3.0000000000001 ERA isn't too shabby

Hes only had 1 good year at 35....
I would rather sign a reliever with a better track record. There aren’t hardly any availble but I’d choose someone cheap like Dan Wheeler, Chad Qualls, or even Juan Cruz. They’ve had a couple of bad years but pretty consistent for the most part.
If he signs with us.
That’ll be 2 Mexican players Arte signed this offseason. “Arte, why you no be more Mexican?” lol

Tough decision.
Over the next 5 years, I’m pretty sure we’ll have 5 more winning seasons than they will.

A nicer house probably means more to him than winning at this point
Not all athletes are Jered Weaver. If our offers aren’t close I’d expect him to go to the O’s

I will shit my pants if it's anything more than a 1 year deal.
But I imagine JeDi doesn’t want to go more than 1 year as well, as evidenced by the LaTroy Hawkins deal and by the general fact that he isn’t a complete moron that goes completely apeshit on mediocre has-been relievers like Del Ninja (Speier, Fuentes, Rodney, Takahashi).

Stoneman signed Speier.
Speier earned his money early on. Then something happened.
I always felt that he was coming down off of ‘roids, or something like that……..’cause he fell off a cliff.
He had a stomach virus and lost about 20-30 lbs
I would like to give him the benefit of the doubt. He is a Christian guy and a Marine, but disappearing and coming back lighter plays right into your theory too.

That's right. Forgot about that.
He was good for the first half of 2007 but sucked balls for the rest of his time here.
Regardless of who it is or what GM signed him, big multi-year deals for mediocre relievers is one of the worst things you can do.

This is possibly Ayala's last contract
If Baltimore offers him more retirement money, that could trump playing for a winner.
by JeffJoiner on Jan 20, 2012 11:40 PM PST via mobile reply actions
He's going to be 34 next season, and he doesn't have a ring.
If it is indeed his last contract, winning could trump a higher dollar amount.
You could go either way with that argument.

if he is married
dollar amount trumps winning

Money talks.
Yeah, I could see a superstar who has already made a buttload of cash going for a last hurah… I think his decision would be based on money or weather.

Anyone else hoping he chooses the O's?
Those stats outside of last year just make me cringe! I’d rather play one of our AAA guys to come up and suck!

What does Jerry see in this guy?
No Ks… Meh walk rate… 0.2 fWAR last year which came off three straight years of exactly 0 fWAR. There are probably better options in AAA.
We passed on Madsen to wait for Ayala?
If that’s the best we can do, please wait.

Do I regret this? No, I believe his tissue has made me stronger. I now have the strength of a grown man and a little baby."
I agree, I'd much prefer Madson.
But, it’s a bit of apples to oranges considering salaries, you know?
Winning doesn't matter. -Lyle
I'd rather give one of our own guys a shot first
Already set:
Walden
Downs
Hawkins
Takahashi
Thompson
That leaves 1 spot for the following to fight over:
Trevor Bell, Bobby Cassevah, Wolverine, rehabbing Kevin Jepsen, Michael Kohn. Throw in Brasier or Carpenter into the mix, and I think MIke has plenty to choose from. Ayala would only get in the way.
"There's nothing that cleanses your soul like getting the hell kicked out of you." - Woody Hayes
Or you let the kids compete like animals at AAA
And let the best of ‘em come up when the first guy gets injured. I’ve got no problem with that. The chances of Ayala being better than most of those guys is pretty good, and if you can upgrade for a million dollars, why not upgrade for a million dollars?
Also it adds depth something we really need in the Bullpen.
It is great we have some AAA guys almost ready for the Majors but vet. depth never hurts and he likely signs a Minor league contract like he did last year or if he does sign a Major league contract my guess is its under 1.5 million so not too worried.

I'd still rather Dipoto trade or sign a reliever...
…I really want one more reliever in our pen who has a K/9 rate higher than league average.
League average K/9 last season was 7.12 and only two in our pen had above that. Thompson had 9.33 and Walden had 9.99. Everyone else’s was below, including newly signed Hawkins and if you count Williams in the pen.
I’d rather drop a couple million on a one year deal for Jason Isringhausen or Brad Lidge. They had high K/9’s last year and would be cheap enough for a one year gamble with their other periphrals stats eing somewhat near league average.
Plus, both have Closing experience to mentor Walden. I wouldn’t let them pitch later than the 7th inning though. Leave the Walden-Downs tandem as is for now.
I think Cordero would be a worse signing than Ayala. Last Year for the Reds he had:
BABIP .214
HR/9 0.78
BB/9 .284
K/9 5.43
xFIP 4.14
With his BABIP being extremely lower than his career average and his K/9 declining, the Rangers are going use this guy as Batting Practice for a high price tag. He was only worth $600k last year with a WAR of 0.1 per fangraphs.
But I think these guys are good enough to compete like animals for our 6th spot
Let’s face it, Trevor Bell is ideal for our 6th spot. Minor league starter, has put up decent numbers as a long reliever, spot starter for the Varsity, still young with some upside. Conversely, Ayala is the anti-Bell.
In MLB’s alternate universe, I realize $1MM isn’t a whole lot of money. So sure, go ahead and sign him. But I don’t think a strong case could be made for a guy with a 2011 xFIP of 4.15, a 2012 projected ERA over 4, and whose last prior good season was 2007. Throw in the fact that he is injury prone and getting older, and I just don’t see it.
I wouldn’t be upset if we signed Ayala. I’d just rather save the money to sign a Matusz/Posey type draft pick.

I have to disagree that Ayala is better than in-house options...
Bell has a little more upside and can go into a long relief role when necessary, or even spot start.
Cassevah is simply better. his K/BB rates leave a lot to be desired but his GB rate is remarkable and does a great job keeping the ball in the park.
I'm hoping for Kohn to rebound as an internal option...
…he had high K/9 rate throughout the minors(11.92 in AAA 2011 and 10.41 in AAA 2010) but the combo of his high walk rate(BB/9 6.57) and hitters using him as a launching pad(HR/9 4.38!), he’s got a lot to iron out.
His FIP was 10.32 and if you adjust his HR/9 to league average, his xFIP is 6.85….so uh, may the force be with Kohn on getting back to 2010 form.
Don't overlook GRichards.
ALL the announcers were waxing about how well he was doing in relief as opposed to starting, last season.

Jerry Knows
What is best for this team. I’ll just sit back and give him the benifit of the doubt.
by CaptainCarlos on Jan 21, 2012 1:45 PM PST via mobile reply actions
it'll be low-risk
He’s probably not being signed on to be an 8th inning guy. like some of you have already said, this is about depth. He’ll probably serve in a Takahashi-esque role, coming in to spare the 8th inning guy once in awhile, but doing most of the work in mop-up, specialist, and 6th-7th innings.
Any update from the Ayala camp?
Haven’t gotten a wink of sleep. I hope he chooses us!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
