Seriously glad he won't be with Texass!
I was hoping he’d go to Washington and stay out of our league. But Detroit will work.
I woke up in a great mood; I don't know what the hell happened.

Yes, I'm glad he's not a Ranger... But that being said, I'm not sure I agree with this :
…Detroit will work.
I must admit I didn’t see this coming. Prior to this I felt if things broke right (no pun intended) with injuries that we’d have the inside track for the AL Championship. Now I’m not so sure….Verlander at the top of that rotation and a 3-4 punch of Cabrera and Fielder looks pretty imposing.
I would have even preferred him in our division with the Mariners…
I hate Detroit. I hate Arlington. I wish Washington got him.

deal's official
9 years, $214MM.
That’s some serious punch in the middle of Detroit’s lineup, but I’ll take that every day of the week to keep him out of Texas!
Thank you, Nick Adenhart. You will always be remembered. #34
Should’ve gotten Miggy when we had the chance!!

I love that this deal takes the spotlight off of Pujols. Now he can settle down and get ready to dominate the AL West.

Nope.
Albert is paid more for longer. He joined a franchise in a larger market.

Yes, that's all true.
But in terms of there being an “overpay spotlight” (patent pending), it’s firmly on Prince now. That was my point.
Sure, Albert’s contract will be a topic of conversation again, but for now, all the greed/loyalty/insane contract comments can be directed toward Prince.
The media is all about “What have you done for me lately?”

Yeah, sometimes teams get duped and fall for boras' tactics
Maybe the tigers flinched thinking they really needed his bat, but I have to think fielder wouldnt have held out so long unless there were offers that were good not great. Just guessing but he probably had a few offers in the 6-7 years, 20+ million a year range. I could see a few teams in on that scenario.

I wonder if they panicked because of V-Mart, kind of like we did with Hillenbrand.
Difference was, Shea was a cheap one year contract.
If the Halos don't care about the way they play, then why should I?
There's a more recent and harmful example of a panicked move than Hillenbrand.
After this off-season, I have no recollection of this Del Ninja character we used to discuss.
I'm not sure that VW was a panic result of KMo, though. It was a desperate attempt to back up the "big splash" braggadacio.
If the Halos don't care about the way they play, then why should I?
I'd say it was more of a panic move after losing out on both Crawford and Beltre
And maybe even Werth, but I can’t remember if we were ever really seriously interested in him.

In four years that guys’ knees are done. I don’t care what the media says about him being in amazing shape, the knees can only take carrying around that heavy load for so long. $20m+ for a full-time DH who will have trouble getting to second on most of his hits that aren’t bombs? Sick.

With Detroit getting him, I think it puts that much more pressure on LAA and TEX to win the AL West
even with 2 wild cards, we’ve got NYY, BOS, TB, LAA, DET, and TEX all looking like serious playoff contenders.
Actually, maybe it doesn’t change things that much since DET was the favorite to win the Central anyways and none of the other AL Central teams appear to be huge challengers for the WC spots to the teams above.
Greatest Inventions Ever? 1. TiVO, 2. Boobs, 3. Baseball
More pressure on Texas, for sure. That window is cllllllooooooosssssssing.
We’ll be all right over here, though.
Winning doesn't matter. -Lyle
Arguably
with a better lineup, Detroit wins even more games in its division, further diminishing any chance of a Central WC team.
AL Central really sucks other than DET
So yeah, the Wild Card picture doesn’t change much. The pressure for TEX and LAA was already there though I think both teams are better than TB and BOS so an AL West team winning a Wild Card shot seems realistic.

There is a long gap between #9 and #21.
Also, while the Cardinals were looking upwards at some big NL teams, they aren’t dwarfed in popularity by NYY and BOS like the Angels are.
Odd note, the only AL teams less popular than the Angels are the A’s, Rays and Jays. Sad company.

The market wasn’t what Boras had expected. I feel sorry for the back end of the Tigers' team bus.

Don't worry, Adam J. Morris is trying his best to move that to the next page.
There’s a big Fanpost about the Jays signing Cordero to help bump it down a bit.
You know, because that story is super relevant to the Rangers.
Winning doesn't matter. –Lyle
It gets better...
Uehara invoked his limited NTC which included Toronto on the list of teams he could block.
Since the put the kibosh on the deal, Toronto signed Cordero, and the list of teams wanting to take Uehara was reduced by one.
That is pretty much a win/win: Uehara mucked up the Rangers plans for a trade, and the fallout caused Toronto to keep Cordero out of an Angels uni.

LSB thinks the Rangers have the best rotation in baseball
along with the best bullpen. Lets get this season started.
CONGER, CONGER, CONGER !!!
I've seen a lot of Tiger fans go on about their rotation too
Verlander is top-rated, of course, but Fister is going to regress and the others are pretty mediocre.
but Detroit is gonna get a lot of dingers so there’s that.
This is good news.
Now Texas is only very good at scoring runs, instead of extremely good at scoring runs.
Scioscialist Party of America - Redistributing your defense since 2000.
Their road numbers don't look like a "very good" scoring team to me.
Willits? Check. Reagins? Check. Mathis? Check
The mystery team strikes again..
First our Halos with Albert and now the Tigers with Prince, I seriously would not mind seeing these two duke it out in this year ALCS
Game 7
Will be decided when Aybar squeezes off of Verlander to drive in the winning run.

This move by the Tigers seems reminiscent of Reagins big splash last year in acquiring Wells
Granted, Fielder is a better hitter, but it looks like the Tigers made a desperate move after seeing V-mart went down.
I agree with Dave Cameron on Fangraphs that if the Tigers had this kind of money to spend they should have gone after an infielder or a pitcher.
but whateva Tigs. you go. you go.

To a future trade of Miguel Cabrera back to the Marlins in exchange for Hanley?
Just a thought.
by C.A._Rep_Los_ANGELS on Jan 24, 2012 2:28 PM PST via mobile reply actions
completely true, agree 100%
But you have two very slow players hitting back to back mayne they feel the need to get more speed in their line up while giving up a little power in Hanley. He would also save them some money and give them better production across the diamond. But still your very right, id rather have Miggy/Fielder over Hanley/Fielder also. Just a thought like i said.

I love reading the sore loser comments from other fans
As if the Mariners signing Fielder would have made these guys miss their mortgage payments. Yeah you sure “dodged a bullet”.
I’ve really been pulling my hair out over here trying to come up with the funds to pay Mr. Pujols.
by Wytelitning on Jan 24, 2012 3:36 PM PST reply actions 2 recs
Will this be seen as a worse contract than Pujols?
Those who were saying our deal with Pujols was bad have got to think this is even worse. There is no way Fielder stays productive for 9 years. I’m gonna go on the record and say Pujols will stay productive longer than Fielder. Forget the age difference, I think the weight difference is a bigger factor.
Where were you on December 8th, 2011 - Pujols Day?
there is a huge difference in the skill sets of the two players that make them fundamentally different baseball players
Pujols has amazing bat control and is an on base machine. He is the best pure hitter in decades. He is likely to age well because even as his bat speed slows, he has the skills to swing only at pitches he can hit and hit them hard when he does.
Fielder can hit the ball hard. As his bat speed slows (and his knees plead for mercy) he will miss more pitches and become a much less successful hitter. He may still hit 30-35 home runs a year, but his average will probably dip into the .250 range. For 23 million a year, that production is going to hurt.

Surprised so many people are happy about this...
Even though he didn’t go to Texas the AL just became that much more challenging. I think Detroit has to be right up their with the Angels as a favorite to win the AL Pennant now.
I would have much prefered to see him stay in the NL.
Playing the Tigers six times a year vs. playing the Rangers 19 times a year.

Surprised you'd be happy to see him stay in the NL.
Our guaranteed World Series birth would become that more challenging.

If you face him in the Series that means you've already gotten there...
At this point I’d take a World Series appearance against ANYONE and roll the dice.
Especially considering all of our recent playoff success.
Silly to speculate either, amirite?
the majority are happy he is out of texas, which would have nullified any success the angels had this offseason.
Winning the division comes first, before anything. Praise jeebus Prince is not in arlington.

Our rotation is better, and probably our defense too
If we meet them in the playoffs, just have Aybar, Bourjos and maybe Trout bunt repeatedly during game one until Verlander is gone. Then, keep doing it just for kicks. Two games later, they’d be facing the guy they faced as the opposing ace in the ALCS.

In the NL you would see him 3 times at most...Probably zero times...
Unless of course he’d gone to the Dodgers….Which wasn’t likely considering the ownership situation and the timeframe..
I know, but we're looking at the reality of the situation.
He didn’t stay in the NL, he’s coming to the AL. And if he’s going to come to the AL, most of us would prefer he doesn’t land in our division.

Are there alot of incentives in the deal?
Cause on the surface it looks like 23.7 mil per year compared to Albert’s 25 mil per season…
Everybody shut up about incentives.
If we pay them it is because he is the second Angel with 3000 hits and/or the all-time home run leader. Nobody will be mad that we are paying him $4 MM for that.

I was talking about the Fielder contract....I didn't say anything about Pujols' incentives.
It seemed to me Subop. above was referencing the Fielder deal and its’ terms….I was merely asking if those terms included alot of incentives or not? I didn’t say anything about Pujols…
To whom are you replying, Jack?
If it’s me, here’s my reply:

I was replying to Subop., and if you read more carefully you'll see that I use the phrase "compared to Albert's 25 mil..(.)"
Obviously I am talking about comparing something to Albert. And obviously that thing is Fielders contract. The Fielder signing is what this fanpost is about after all. AND, Subop. confirmed below that he was refering to Prince’s deal when being stunned by the terms…
I don’t think it is that hard to follow….
Sigh.
I didn’t say anything about Pujols…
Cause on the surface it looks like 23.7 mil per year compared to Albert’s 25 mil per season…

Why are you nit-picking.... I am talking about Prince's deal okay...
This is not worth starting a flame war….It is a minor point. Mostly the vehemence was started by Halowitz by saying “everybody shut up about incentives” when he obviously didn’t even take two minutes to attempt understand the essence of the conversation.
The moral of the story , and this is not so much directed at you 5th starter as at Halowitz ,is “Keep your mouth shut until you know the score.”
I think the real moral of the story is:
“Learn how to use the reply button.”

I did use the reply button.... And my response about asking about incentives was directly underneath the comment by Subop. and directed at him....
I don’t know why you would think it was intended for you…

I don't know anything about incentives
But what I meant to say is that if $215 million is the going price for the Prince Fielders of the world, then Pujols is a steal at $250 million.
I was pretty surprised by how much better a hitter Pujols has been over Fielder when I compared them on Fangraphs.
exactly this!
The only one who seriously believes fielder is anywhere near the hitter pujols is is boras.

Why are the Mariners fans acting giddy that their team didn't sign Fielder?
I could have sworn they were stoked on potentially nabbing him just up until this afternoon.

Win Win
Chances are Fielder signing with the Tigers an American League team will do very little to diminish the Angels World Series aspirations. First off the obvious. The Tigers are not in the AL West and the Angels don’t play the Tigers enough times during the regular season to see their expected win total take much of a hit (tenths of a win). Secondly, the Tigers are not going to be taking away one of the playoff spots from the Angels. The more likely culprits of this are the Rangers, Yankees, Red Sox and Rays. The AL Central is only sending one team to the playoffs, or that is by far the most likely scenario. Then even if both teams make the playoffs there’s probably only slightly higher than a 50/50 chance (depending on how many teams qualify) that the two teams would ever face each other if the Angels were to advance in each round. I think the signing if anything (because he is not on the Rangers) actually helps the Angels playoff chances. Of course the best case scenario was for him to go to the NL but this is not much worse at least for this year. Down the road though? That story is still unwritten.
Now Mark Trumbo
won’t be the worst defensive 3B in the American League.
