Kendrys Takes Next Step
Bourjos on Kendrys batting practice - "Its very impressive." Kendrys began taking BP from both sides of the plate & has now progressed further then he ever did last year.

Lets not get ahead of our self. Even if Kendry comes back 100% he has been off for almost 2 years its going to take some time to get back into the swing of things and acclimated somewhat. He isn’t going to be able to come in and pick up where he left off. Or at least we shouldn’t expect that to happen.

Tequila.
You need some.

I'm okay with that
If it is mean taunting of Darvish as Kendrys circles the bases (I really wanted to type that as tauntaun).
He will just get hurt. I'm all about a designated runner for K-Mo.
How does this team win with this offense? Hey, anyone....DRAW A WALK!!!

Reminds me of that commercial they showed at the stadium a couple years back
Kendrys is watching felix hernandez pitch in mlb the show and blasts a hr off him. Then begins taunting him saying his pitches look as big as grapefruits to him and talking some other trash.

I still miss
That Vlad and Arod commercial where they were smacking home runs. Could have done without Arod though…
He's not bummin' the party....He's being realistic.
Based upon recent history, the most realistic attitude one can take on Kendrys is “wait and see.” And by that I mean, see him in game action for numerous games. Not BP. Not Spring Training. Regular season game action.
Thanks for clearing that up.

I expect him to come back with a slash line of .350/.500/.650 from both sides of the plate.

His Health
is the only thing that should hold him back. As I’ve mentioned in other threads on this subject, there is no reason to think that even a two-year layoff would have any impact on his hitting ability. I say this quite confidently based on precedent. See, e.g., Ted Williams (and several other great players who missed several years while serving in WWII – and Korea, too, in Williams’ case – and returned to the field without skipping a beat). If he’s healthy, he’ll hit.

What a Pure Swing!
Kendrys wasn’t supposed to be any good at 1st base, because he was an outfielder, but he was. He wasn’t going to be nowhere as good as Texeria, but he was in the MVP running in his first full year at 1st and we didn’t even care that we lost Texeria. Kendrys is a professional and has one of the most perfect effortless swings I have ever seen. I doesn’t just go away. he has the best of everything at his disposal inorder to get back to where he was. There is no doubt in my mind that he will be 100% ready to go and Arte will need to find the money to give him the fat contract to keep him around!!!! Go Angels!
by justaguy92320 on Jan 26, 2012 8:48 PM PST up reply actions
Well def. don’t see him sticking around after this year unless he goes to the OF and I don’t think thats possible or going to happen at this point. I say this cause he isn’t signing a big contract to stay at DH full time. It wouldn’t make any sense for him and plus he has Scott Boras not that they couldn’t do what weaver did but it isn’t common.
by MoralesHomers on Jan 26, 2012 9:12 PM PST up reply actions
Your right I am wrong.
He is under our control next year and is a FA in 2014 if we don’t resign him to a long term deal. But again I still think chances of him signing a long term deal is low though if healthy I hope I am wrong.
by MoralesHomers on Jan 26, 2012 10:29 PM PST up reply actions
can't blame him....
if he’s up to playing first base, he’ll probably want to. And we have the best 1st baseman in the MLB now, so…. I gotta say, tho, I would love it if he returns to form and desires to remain in Anaheim….K-Mo is the man.
Get back to me when he is doing wind sprints and losing all that fluff he has accumulated by not being able to walk for two years.
Then Ill get excited.
"DOV all the way
Just compare the signature lines. Phi’s is terrible, just like his skidmark…errr…"mohawk". "
killjoy
Even you have to admit that this is at least a little exciting. He’s further along this year than last year, and everything seems to be pointing to a recovery. I doubt he’ll be the 35 HR, .900+ OPS guy that he was, but if he can come back to even a shadow of that, we’ll be good.
and this is really the first step toward that.
Thank you, Nick Adenhart. You will always be remembered. #34

While true the article also states he appeard to be lighter and in better shape than he was last year at spring training. Also the batting from both sides is huge as he was unable to do it last year cause of concern over the ankle he had sugery on.

I don't know
It seems like a healthy Morales is a hell of a lot better than a healthy Trumbo especially when you factor in that he could hit from both sides

At the very least, this news allows me to believe that we'll get to see Kendrys hit in spring training.
That in itself is extremely encouraging to me. The next step will obviously be for him to HIT major league pitching. The point is its now looking like we will get to see him taking some hacks in about a month! I, for one, can’t wait.
Life is short, enjoy the ride.
He's definitely my first round pick for fantasy baseball!!!
seriously though, glad he’s comin’ around.

There's reason to be optimistic
if he is in better shape like Bourjos is saying why can’t he come close to his 2009 form? He’s a professional baseball player, talent doesn’t just disappear
No Talent doesn’t disappear. Ill say though better shape than was last year doesn’t mean 2009 shape (or baseball shape gained by actually playing). Also all the batting practice in the world wont get him back in the swing of things against MLB pitching though ST would help a ton and may be enough.
by MoralesHomers on Jan 26, 2012 4:05 PM PST up reply actions
He developed the talent that led to his 2009 season over 25-26 years
I doubt he lost all of it in 1-2 years.

But his timing and rhythm might need a month or so to come back. I’m 100% on board with Kendrys hanging out in Salt Lake for a month while Trumbo and Abreu DH

Maybe
Out of curiosity, since I’ve used Ted Williams as an example, I went to see how he did in his first month back playing after missing three full years while he was off fighting the Nazis.
His April 1946 line: 346/.493/.519.
Granted, using perhaps the best hitter ever as a measuring stick isn’t really fair, but I think it’s sufficient to drive home the point that hitters don’t forget how to hit. Sometimes really good players struggle coming out of spring training (see Salmon, Tim) when the only time they’ve missed is the off-season, so it’s not unreasonable to think that he might need a bit more than just a regular spring training to get the timing back. But there is no reason to think that it won’t come back.
Im by no means saying that he wont come back and wont get back to his 09’ form. What im trying to say is I don’t necessarally think he is going to come back and his first game back be producing like he was in 09’. How long it will take I have no idea. It is a question of his health though. And cause of that it is different than Ted Williams. Sure your example shows they don’t lose there hitting ability but im not questioning that. To me its more a matter having to get acclimated so to speak again. This is what spring training is for but it could imo take longer for Morales as he is also (unlike Williams) having to learn to trust that ankle. My hope is ST will allow him to do that and he wont still be working on that during season.

I don’t think we need Mr. Abreu anymore. Let him go.

Now is the winter of our deep content.
Even if Bourjos does regress a little at the plate...
He still provides so much value in the field with our flyball pitchers. He could provide 2-3 WAR (very rough estimate) just based on his defense and speed on the basepaths. Still a very important cog for the Angels. I worry about Trumbo more than Bourjos.
by stevefinleyallstars on Jan 27, 2012 7:17 AM PST up reply actions
I was looking at Ellsbury's and Bourjos' age 24 stats
And they are fairly comparable.
At age 24, Bourjos hit at a .271 / .327 OB clip.
At age 24, Ellsbury hit at a .280 / .336 OB clip. From there, Ellsbury has gone on to be a prime center fielder for the BoSox.
But very similar 24-seasons. Similar tools. I’m one of the firm proponents that Bourjos will improve next year, and has sneaky power, making him a potential 15-20 HR /45 SB guy. He’s got the make-up and attitude to do well. Here’s hoping!
Speaking of "sneaky power"
I love that whenever Bourjos hits a home run, Gubie says, “He’s got some pop in his bat.”

I liked the "looking lighter than last year" line
That gives me hope that he’s really been working hard to rehab. The look of his physique last year wasn’t really encouraging.

Great news.
I’m still holding out hope that he can be at least a 20-25 HR, .820 OPS left handed bat behind Pujols.
That’s a far cry from his 2009 form, but even the leve of production listed above would be a huge boost.

Sam's article a few weeks ago gave me renewed hope
I, too, was skeptical. But if he can come back the way Ron Gant and others did after long layoffs and horrible injuries, he would absolutely solidify the lineup.
