Contract predictions?
I’m going with 4/37

Probably about their
Think it could be up to 40 though. The last couple mill could be incentives that could be reached idk.

Predictions
I think he’d be dumb to take what amounts to a 3/$32M on his first three free agent years. Let’s say his last year of arbitration (2012) is $5.5M. Then for the next three years let’s predict a WAR of something like 4.0, 3.8 and 3.5. That is worth around $55M on the open market for those three years and around $60.5M for the next four years. The Angels get a discount for the security but it is only one year out from his free agent year. If the Angels get Howie locked up for anywhere around 4/$37 it will be a steal unless you are valuing Kendrick at an average of around 2.3 WAR for the last three years of the deal.
Good points
It’s just that I heard that Howie was looking for 5/50
Which would leave him at 4/45 for his FA years, which would still be a discount according to your numbers.
I think they compromised from there, however.
What we've got here is a failure to communicate.

Gotcha
If he said he was looking for 5/50 then yeah 4/45 would sound right. Seems like he is giving the Angels a good deal or worried he might regress heavily in his contract year.
I say he just wants to stay here
Anaheim suddenly seems like a very appealing place to go.
I think signing Albert Pujols had something to do with that, though I could be wrong. Maybe it’s because of LT Hawkins, I hear that guy is the truth.

With a future of Mike Trout getting on base ahead of him and El Hombre hitting behind him, I can see Howie being able to do some real damage in the 2-hole.
It actually is staggering to think of the potential production
But even with Fleet Pete ahead of him, before the splashdown of Trout, I can see Howie working wonders out of that 2 hole. With Trout imagine how good our first four look.

Except for Segura, there’s not much middle infield depth in the upper levels (and even Segura hasn’t played above A+). Next winter was going to be interesting if both Aybar and Kendrick were leaving town.

Well, I was talking about depth.
I don’t see Segura being much better than Amarista. Just a year younger, and not hitting better, for the level, necessarily. Whether Amarista develops into a decent 2B at the MLB level is anyone’s guess, but as depth for Howie (not gratefully signed for a while) I think he does just fine :).
I do like Segura better than Romine though ….

As far as depth is concerned, you make a fair point
But the scouts really like Segura. Kevin Goldstein had him as a 5-star prospect after 2010, along with you-know-who. Injuries cut short his 2011, but he seemed to be fine in the AFL. Again, though, he hasn’t played a lick above A+.

Seeing a bunch of fastballs batting in front of Pujols, maybe he really might get that batting title he’s supposed to have been getting all along. Or four.
Wow

from fangraphs:
Weighted Runs Created Plus (wRC+) measures how a player’s wRC compares with league average. League average is 100 and every point above 100 is a percentage point above league average. For example, a 125 wRC+ means a player created 25% more runs than league average.
yup, so Howie created 20% more runs than the average player
as a second baseman!!! And I think characterizing his defense as solid like I did above is selling him short. Speaking of short, the New England midge and HK led second basemen in almost every defensive category.

Horribe may not be the right word but 4/33 or an average of 8.2 ish a year is cheap when buying his contract years and when you take his defensive and offensive factors in such as WAR and such. They are getting him for a huge bargain when you also take into account buying his first 3 years of free agency.
Now what they likely did though was take a look at other 2nd baseman particularly Utley whose last contract was 7/85 (12.1 per year) and Phillips last one at 5/38 (7.6) and figured Phillips is a good comparable. His WAR was also comparable though a little bit better so he should be somewhere between those two numbers though imo your buying his prime years also so it likely should be closer to the Utley contract or around 10 million. His contract as it is said to be would be only 6.6 or 1.6 more than his projected price would have been for if he went though arbitration this year. So he is probably giving up potentially around 12-16 million over 4 years.
Love the contract for the Angels I just think maybe the Agent didn’t to a great job in this case cause he is making less than his closest comparable and at a younger age going into his prime and free agency.
(Sorry for repetitiveness)
by MoralesHomers on Jan 7, 2012 10:30 PM PST up reply actions
He probably left
around $10M on the table buy not going in to free agency. More if he repeated last years numbers, slightly less if he did not.
If he was to even continue his numbers from last year he would be right around where Phillips was for a single year when he got himself a 7.6 annual contract. But then you take into a WAR slightly higher, defense (not sure if he is rated higher), him going into his prime, and free agency and its at least 10 mill but I think more as I stated. Just think the Agent could have easily dona a bit better.
by MoralesHomers on Jan 7, 2012 11:33 PM PST up reply actions
Phillips
hosed himself too. He has racked up 17.0 fWAR over the first four years of that deal, which would value that output at $73.9M. So the Reds have already netted themselves right around $36M of extra value from the deal. If Howie’s agent allowed that to be the comp from which to work with he should be fired.
I only see 9.7 WAR
http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/p/phillbr01.shtml
For comparison Kendrick though his contract wasn’t 4 years over that same span has a WAR of 10.9
http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/k/kendrho01.shtml
by MoralesHomers on Jan 7, 2012 11:54 PM PST up reply actions
Phillips
Fangraphs page. UZR has him highly rated on defense and the Fans Scouting Report has him as the top ranked defensive 2B in all of baseball so I will believe their rating of him.
Free agent signed: 08-12, 5 Year $38M
2008: fWAR 3.3, Value $14.7M
2009: fWAR 3.3, Value $14.8M
2010: fWAR 4.4, Value $17.5M
2011: fWAR 6.0, Value $26.9M
4 Year Total. fWAR 17.0, Value $73.9M
Still one year left on deal. Can he reach $100M in value over that period?
Whats fWAR? The financial Impact of WAR?
Thats interesting that their is such a big difference between the two sites WAR numbers.
But useing fangraphs I looked at Kendricks over last 4 years and he is 12 value 52.7M.
http://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=4229&position=2B
So I guess at the end we can say both are worth a lot more potentially. Phillips would have to have a career year in WAR which doesn’t mean a career year in production to reach a value of 100M over that period. would have to have greater than 6 WAR.
by MoralesHomers on Jan 8, 2012 12:17 AM PST up reply actions
fWAR = Fangraphs WAR
you are not using WAR either, you are using bWAR or Baseball-reference WAR. No way is Phillips a minus defender at 2B. He is elite.
There's a pretty good case against Kendrick, too
he has a long history of injuries, has played more than 140 games ONCE in his career. Before 2011, he was worth an average of 2.2 WAR per season from ‘07 to ’11, which on the F.A. market is about 10.3 million a year. Considering one of these 4 years he signed for was an arbitration year worth about 5-5.5 million, that number isn’t THAT far off from what he’s going to get paid per season on this contract’s average annual value.
Teams shouldn’t HAVE to pay players according to their best seasons without a longer history of success. That’s what the Angels did with GMJ, and we know how that turned out.
And obviously I’m not trying to compare GMJ to Kendrick. But when in contract negotiations, the player doesn’t get a TON of leverage just because he finally had one season of significant value in 5 1/2, regardless of how optimistic ALL parties are that he will end up repeating similar value for the next few years. So the number left on the table is certainly debatable…and certainly not necessarily lower than we expected because of the failures of his agent.
And if you factor in that he very possibly took some sort of discount for a team that suddenly looks very strong, the numbers actually seem to make sense.
This is a sig.
by Caseys Kiss of Death on Jan 8, 2012 9:43 AM PST up reply actions
His agent does his bidding
Think back to the number of nagging injuries and the days on the DL for Kendrick over the years.
Now imagine that he twists something or breaks something and misses enough time in 2012 to drop his price as a free agent at the end of next season.
Players—smart ones, anyway—always assume it could all end tomorrow due to injury of some kind. Therefore, the offer on the table, assuming that it is within reasonable comps and is guaranteed money, will often be taken in lieu of testing the free agent market later.
Kendrick—and his agent—both did the smart thing.

According to this contemporaneous story from the LA Times, Reed never says the offer was pulled from the table due to the DeShields trade. That certainly would have been the opportunity to set the record straight.
Instead, he is defending a strategy of waiting for other, larger offers to come rolling in.

Maybe the logic on Howie's side of the deal is this....
If he was going to get around 5 million this year in arb then that means the rest of the deal is essentially 3 years at around 9 1/2 million per year. That sounds pretty good for a guy that in the past has struggled to stay healthy and now he is assured of a big payday regardless of how he does next year. I’m thinking it was a case of a bird in hand is worth 2 in the bush for Howie. Yea he left some money on the table if he goes out and repeats what he did last year or even improves on it. But now he’s set for life and his kids and their kids are set for life if they spend this money wisely.

at an average WAR of 2.26 over those last three years. Even giving the team a discount, he sold himself short.
I agree
Especially when on top of all the areas he could look at to show he is worth more their is the fact that that is a position where top guys are hard to come by especially on offense and defense and he is in the top 4 probably for sure.

I have no doubt that Howie didn't want to start over somewhere else.
Also, I agree with MH252525.
If the Angels were playing hard ball, Amarista and Segura were more than casually mentioned.
Howie’s been around long enough to know that four years is the new norm with the Angels. Also, who, as a baseball player, wouldn’t give his left nut to bat in front of Pujols for the next four years. If all goes well, Howie won’t be too old or too expensive to garner another Angels contract in four years.

Like I said below that is true but it would helm make his contract bigger if Howie had got more what market value is for him or closer to what we had been discussing as a contract pricetag. But yes being the only above average (and good) 2nd baseman on the market in itself will boost his asking price a lot.

In that sense ok but id argue that the contract itself doesn’t make him happy or unhappy it would be better for him if Kendrick would have gotten soething around what we were expecting of 4 years and 45million or 5 and around 52million

Think his asking price may be a little higher though.
But if I remember right and I may not I know they had contract talks last year that didn’t seem to be going so well so should be interesting to see if he stays. My guess he would want another 5 year deal around 55 million. His previous when I actually went and looked (thought it was 4 years) was 5 years and 38 million or about 7.6 million a year. so a contract of around 11 would make sense though not sure if team pays it with talent at SS behind him.

one thing Trumbo probably has a better arm Id say given his past as third baseman and pitcher. But I think Kendrick if he was playing outfield and what I have seen with him even at second probably would be ok at 3rd from the arm aspect.
by MoralesHomers on Jan 7, 2012 10:33 PM PST up reply actions
Howie played left fied
the least demanding outfield position in the arm department. At 2nd I have seen him whif on some bad throws and even in my irritation compared his arm to a wet noodle. Now no one is perfect at defense, and Howie is pretty good, but I think his defense ability gears him towards 2nd sooooo much more than third.

Hey played 3rd I believe in Highschool before he was drafted as well as Pitched. (this is what I have been told here before). He has played some 3rd in WInter ball I believe but not in the Minors though I thought he was tried their in Rookie ball or single A. Tom Kotchmen had said something to that affect at some point that he was at least tried out their but he didn’t have the quickness or anything but what he sees now from him is totally different and he can hardly recognize the guy with his footwork and speed. Sorry I don’t remember where but I know it was from him that it was said on the Angels trying him their at some point.

And, I think you WAY underestimate the skills required to play acceptable 3B at the MLB level.

“Trumbo actually worked at third base when he began his professional career with the Angels in 2005. Ironically, it was Picciolo (the Angels’ minor-league roving infield instructor from 2006 through 2010) who helped convert Trumbo to first base when it was decided he couldn’t meet the defensive demands at third.”
Yes its not much experience but it did happen, based on your cite it or it didnt happen requirement. I agree with you that it requires enormous skills to play the hot corner, and I agree with Soth that it would be a “longshot,” however, it is nice to imagine a way to keep trumbo’s bat in the lineup with a healthy Morales and this pujols fellow

trumbo is getting a shot out of pure necessity to try to keep his bat in the lineup
Howie plays good defense at a tough infield position that fits his skill set, we dont have a 2nd baseman to replace him really (you dropped Segura’s name, the dude played in high A last year who knows what happens to him).
IF Segura pans out as we think he might then we will cross that bridge, but I can’t imagine the team actually planning that far ahead especially with a guy whose arm strength is not exactly his strong point (pun intended).
In the meantime we give Trumbo the chance to play 3rd. In addition, if memory serves me correctly, Trumbo was a former pitching prospect who has a strong arm and a skill set that might fit the hot corner (assuming he works on his footwork)

again the guy played a season at high A...
This speculation is getting outlandish….. we have callaspo at 3rd for the next couple of years if the trumbo experiment fails and that is that. We are trying to pencil Segura in at 3 different infield positions when we dont even know if he will be able to produce at a level above single A.
Segura will develop and his skills will begin to dictate which position(s) will be best for him and that will be how we will approach him as a career. I cant imagine the angels organization would start forcing players into positions after a season of high A ball in order to fit their needs for the current season.

Not if Trumbo is healthy....6th is Trumbo's spot.
Of course that is assuming Morales comes back (still a big if)….With no Kendrys I think Trumbo will move up to 5th…
from an OBP yea he's better than Howie.
But I want to see Howie 2nd because he has the raw strength to take advantage of the extra fastballs he would see. I think 2 years ago Howie had one of the highest average homerun distance, the guy is surprisingly strong for his size and has always been a great fastball hitter.

batting Pujols 4th as compared to 3rd won't happen.
You might not believe me but if we have Bourjos/Aybar batting 8th/9th in the lineup I think you could make a case for Albert batting leadoff rather than cleanup. Because lets say the last ab of a game in a lineup is equally distributed 162/9 = 18 abs per spot in the lineup the difference between 1st and 4th is 3 spots so Albert should get an extra 54 plate apps. batting leadoff than cleanup and since the difference between our 2/3 guys with Albert batting 4th isn’t that much better than our 8/9 guys with Albert batting leadoff I’d have to think the extra 54 abs for Pujols would be more than worth not having any runners on for him in the first.
But I’d bat him 3rd to be sure.

good point about the ABs
I agree completely that he should bat 3rd, but i think we need to have howie in front of Pujols, mainly for howie’s skill set to exploit that role (Callaspo would benefit with more runs, but Howie could quite literally master it with more power), but I would also like someone with a higher OBP than pete or aybar in front of Pujols
When I flip a coin I dont say heads or tails, I say Halos or Spurs

yea I agree
there is no perfect #2 hitter on this team the way it’s currently constructed, although I think Trout should be in that role as early as next year. I wouldn’t bat him leadoff only because he will hit for a lot of power as long as they don’t tell him his only role is to get on base and slap it the other way. Those 2 homers he hit in Seattle were SICK, such easy power and from a 19 year old, I still can’t believe some people only see him hitting 15 homers per year.
My solution would have been to bail on Kendry (at least in terms of counting on him to comeback) and to sign Kotchman. Casey is a number 2 type. He gets on base and he has a lot more power than either a guy like Bobby at this stage of his career or Callaspo.

I agree with your comments. Howie and/or Callaspo would be ideal #2 hitters. However,
thinking outside the box, since our second largest $investment is Vernon Wells, imagine the Angels trying to maximize their ROI on VWells by batting him in front of Pujols….whether that be #2 or #3.
I’m thinking financially: Unless he is totally washed up, VWells’ potential would be most realized to the team by having Pujols bat behind him, as opposed to Howie, Callaspo, Torii, or possibly even Trumbo. Otherwise, we’ve got a $21MM contract batting 7th, or 6th if Morales doesn’t make it.
Don’t get me wrong: My lineups would have Howie or Callaspo batting #2. I just thought I might trigger some discussion of other scenarios. Howie, Callaspo, and Torii are going to do what they do anyway.
Would the TEAM benefit more by having Howie, or VWells, batting in front of Pujols?
Howie. No to the rest

Therefore, the ideal hitter to hit in front of Pujols..
is the player with the highest OBP to A) Get on base and make pitcher’s pitch to Albert and B) Provide more RBI opportunities.
Abreu, when in the lineup, would be a good option. Torii and Callaspo would be nice options as well.
The problem with Abreu
is that he takes Morales, Trumbo or Callaspo out of the line up.

Then decided to sneeze and shart at the same time which happened to all get on my beloved Mathis jersey. =]

Jim Bowden on Tony Reagins.
Style: Authoritative, brilliant baseball mind who works well in the trifecta with owner Arte Moreno and manager Mike Scioscia. Builds teams on pitching and defense up the middle. Active at trade deadlines, will trade prospects and has the resources to acquire All-Stars

I forgot to add that after my wife washed the jersey
she blacked out Mathis’s name and put PUJOLS over it and it is now her beloved pujols jersey.

Having kids is like climbing a mountain
Its not really fun while you are doing it, but it is totally worth it when you look back at where you have been and what you have been through.

I wanted to ask how that Figgy signing was going but I have to wait 24 hours.
Ratz, I hate losing a great comeback

Things are looking up in Seattle
once the Astros arrive, they will have a humdinger of a race for last place every year.

So I just completely ganked your line over there.
I’m sorry, but I really want my first one-post ban. It took me four on LSB and that still bothers me.
I’ll buy you a beer for stealing a wonderful, wonderful line.

Thats a little sad that it didin’t get you banned they are normally very very quick to ban people.

Those guys are dicks
I guess grunge really was an expression of Seattle. Forget the rain, people commit suicide to get away from those guys.

LSB was worried it would drive up the price of kinsler
since they define him as a better player….. which i disagree with

Mariner Fun Facts!
The Mariner front office that was hired after the 2008 season put an emphasis on run prevention.
And my, oh, my! They have done a spectacular job of preventing runs.
Over the past three seasons here’s how the M’s offense ranks among MLB’s 30 teams:
- 30th (last) in runs scored
- 30th in wRC+
- 30th in OBP
- 30th in slugging percentage. Now that’s impressive! Even though the Ms have the advantage of the DH, all the NL teams beat out the Mariners.
This is a significant sample size: 18,074 plate appearances
So congratulations to the Mariner’s front office! That is an incredible accomplishment to put together hitters who excel at preventing runs.
