WTF?
I thought that the Miami Marlins were going to get him?
A’s still suck though, I don’t see the point in this.

Maybe he took one look at that monstrosity in CF in Miami and walked away

What do you mean?

He'll be playing RF, most likely no?
Crisp is still the superior defender in CF

I would laugh so hard
if he totally flopped/when he flops
Kendrys wins 2012 AL Comeback Player of the year
Wow
Thought for sure he was going to Miami. How the heck did they get out-bid by the A’s?
Even though he would probably be more comfortabe in Miami with all the other Cubans and they have that new ballpark, I guess money still trumps everything in most FA cases.
by Persi W on Feb 13, 2012 9:53 AM PST via mobile reply actions
Marlins wanted a 6 year deal
Oakland asked only for 4 years, which means he’ll be entering his free agency at age 30. Great deal for him.

Wow. Very interesting
If he plays well it’s a great move strategically, except for the fact that he has now doomed himself to 4 years of playing in Oakland.
by Persi W on Feb 13, 2012 6:59 PM PST via mobile up reply actions
It sounds like the Marlins offered more money
but the A’s wanted him more and I’m sure feeling more wanted has to do with something in their decisions to sign. But I mean come on…Oakland?
Kendrys wins 2012 AL Comeback Player of the year
According to Kevin Goldstein, the Marlins did offer more money, but they wanted 6 years of team control.
Cespedes’s agent was looking for 10 years(which no one was offering) or a 4 year deal that would allow Cespedes to hit FA afterwords. That’s exactly what Oakland just gave him.
Makes no sense to me.
You have a firesale, then you spend big on a prospect.

and then only 4 years of control
seems like by the time the A’s may be relevant again, he will be gone.
I am on a horse!
In 354 AB's,
Yoennis Cespedes had a slash line of .333/.424/.667 with 33 HR, 99 RBI, 49 BB, 11 SB. Although, his home team’s park is a hitter’s park, he hit 18 HR on the road.
Touche Beane.

He should be hitting his stride
about when they open a new stadium, makes sense. If they ever get out of that portal to hell.
Unlike this cat, my love for the LAA will never die.
This was my first thought as well.
Miami’s route was to bring in every big name free agent they could to coincide with a stadium opening. It appears Oakland is gambling that this guy will be hitting super-stardom about that time.
Another highly touted import to the AL West
I’m looking forward to watching this guy play. I always like to see what all the hype is about. Perhaps I’ll catch an A’s game in Phoenix next month. Has anybody been to that stadium?
Yes, it's a fantastic stadium.
I used to go to a lot of D-back games in ’00-01 when I lived in Tempe before I moved back home to Newport in ’02. Good timing right?

AL West gets even more interesting
Seems like a big gamble for the A’s though. Their scouts must really like him.
Hmmm... I wasnt under the impression he was mlb ready
I thought he was like a kendrys morales project with less promise.
by Balls and Strikes on Feb 13, 2012 11:23 AM PST via mobile up reply actions
Some think he will possibly need some Minor league time (AAA probably) but they say he will get a shot in Spring to win the RF job. Plus my guess is with the quality of players they got if he is anything close to what people expect he will be on there MLB team.
by MoralesHomers on Feb 13, 2012 1:43 PM PST up reply actions
Huge potential trade chip....
If he pans out as touted, I think Beane will eventually look to move him for a huge haul. I can’t see them building around him, they’re not even building at the moment.

Typical Beane
Unless he ends up playing 3rd, I’m glad it won’t be us emptying the farm at the trade deadline.
Star power in the AL West is awesome.
At least there will now be a compelling reason to watch the A’s attempts at offense in person or on TV.
I think they’re still better than the Mariners even with their fire sale this offseason. And they’ll be better than the Astros when they come over to the AL.

So I’m curious, is Cuban/Dominican pitching more like MLB pitching or is Japanese?
"Stay loyal to the Angels. As for me, I'm jumping on the Nationals bandwagon, later." -Daniel Sirca

It seems to me it tends to be closer to MLB than Japanese is.

From what I have heard, Latin america follows our style-
Fastball is the pitch with off-speed stuff as out pitches. Japan works backwards with lots of breaking stuff to set up a fastball.

Because of the posting system, Darvish had to go to the Rangers, even though he really didn't want to.
But Cespedes going to the A’s? This makes no sense.

I'm looking forward to our sarting rotation...
completely making this guy look like a little leaguer.I have nothing against him except for the fact that he all of a sudden demands millions of dollars when he has not proved squat in the US. Guys in college have proven way more yet the majority of them end up signing minor league contracts or for league minimum (unless you go in the main rounds)
Do you hate Kendry Morales also?
The only thing VW did differently last year than the year before, besides inflate his stats by playing half his games in Toronto, is buy into the Scioscia/Hatcher philosophy that a walk is as good as an out. 2011: .218/.248/.412. 2010(road stats): .224/.299/.400.
Morales signed for 6 years and around 10 mil (with incentives)
I don’t think we’re making the right comparison here.
Looks like apples to apples (albeit a smaller apple) to me.

Both signed for millions, having never played in the US, while benefitting from direct free agency versus college players having to enter the draft. Kendry seems to fit Oppo’s complaint.

Except Kendrys got a more reasonable contract for someone with no major league experience
Plus he spent plenty of time in the minors before we called him up. At 9 mil per season, the A’s don’t have that luxury.
by Persi W on Feb 14, 2012 1:56 PM PST via mobile up reply actions
Cespedes is considered to be further along than Morales was when he was signed though.
I’ve seen a few different professional opinions throughout the sweepstakes that Cespedes might only need a few months in the minors.
I’m sure that if Morales was thought to be that close to major league ready, he would have received a bigger contract than he did.
Morales was considered the best bat to come out of Cuba in quite some time.
He batted third for the Cuban team as a 19 year I think.
Cespedes is what 26? Kendrys is 28.

A’s got pretty much nothing else to threaten with, and we get to see if this guy is the real deal more times in a season than anybody else in baseball.

He'll need a couple of years to adjust
Then maybe he’ll be great. Even if he is great it won’t help the A’s much. But I hope he does do well. More spotlight on the AL West. As it should be, dammit.
