Sorry
I got so excited I missed the “gradually” part. Still good news, nonetheless.

Nice!
If Morales is also healthy & producing maybe JeDi can get a nice return on Trumbo in a trade. Sell high baby, Callaspo is good enough at 3B.
Life is short, enjoy the ride.

Lol!
You guys are hilarious. The bottom line is that a healthy Morales, Trumbo, Pujols, Abreu, plus CJ Cron comming up fast in the minors equals way too many 1B/DH types. Out of those, Trumbo gets my vote to be shipped off (considering Abreu is likely too expensive to move). Trumbo has a low obp & playing on this team with Mickey Hatcher as his batting coach isn’t going to help. On top of that, I doubt he’ll ever be anything other then bellow avg at 3B. If Kendrys starts mashing, I would trade Trumbo in a heartbeat to the highest bidder.
Life is short, enjoy the ride.
Yep
I think there are still enough GMs out there that will overlook his terrible OBP and just see the power that we could get a decent return for him. Of course, this is dependent on Morales being healthy. If he’s not, it wouldn’t be a bad thing to have Trumbo around.

Kendry has never been a very impressive OBP guy either.
His most impressive year he batted .306 with a .355 OBP. I firmly believe Trumbo could put up those numbers with a little more time in the majors and he’s under club control for a lot longer and can actually play a position in the near future. The only thing Morales has over trumbo imo is being a switch hitter and left handed pop.
I like Morales don’t get me wrong, i even have his jersey. But I wouldn’t use his 2 years left as a reason to lose 5 more years of trumbo.
What would you trade him for? Your probably only going to get middling prospects.
by Darth Duane on Feb 8, 2012 8:42 PM PST up reply actions 1 recs
I have a hard time seeing Trumbo regularly putting up numbers remotely close to Morales's 2009 outside of perhaps some sort of insane career year.
But then again, we don’t really know if Morales’s 2009 was a crazy career year for him either.
I have gone back and forth on this a lot, so I can definitely see both sides, but…
If we knew that Morales really is the player he was in 2009, I might feel differently, but I don’t think it makes sense to trade Trumbo(barring some sort of completely nuts offer from a drunk GM or a newly employed Tony Reagins) unless Morales proves two things:
1) That he’s healthy and can handle the grind of the regular season
and
2) That his talent level really is at least close to 2009.
And even then it obviously depends on how much interest there really is in Trumbo.
And while I think the difference in service time is a good point, the uncertainly surrounding Trumbo’s playing time going forward does put how much value the Angels will get out of him over those 5 years of team control into question.
Trumbo was a rookie in 2011
and pressed into service out of necessity. He will be better in the coming years, if given a a chance. he’s a hard worker. Oh, and he was hurt most of the end of the season.
I don’t understand why everyone is SO down on Trumbomb, when he has only shown part of his potential and is still young.

And, IMHO, it looked like he learned something with every AB.
If the Halos don't care about the way they play, then why should I?
Because he was a 25 year old rookie who showed almost no control of the strike zone(19 unintentional walks in 573 plate appearances)
And outside of Angels blogs, isn’t really thought of as someone with a ton of upside.
I’m not saying he won’t get better, but him turning into a .924 OPS guy seems overly optimistic to me. That would pretty much make him a star level player going forward, especially since he won’t be a 1B.
I just don’t see that.

Thank You Joberoni ....
I’m glad i’m not the only one around here with some sense… I said essentially the same thing you are saying about 5 months ago when alot of people were dissing Trumbo. I suggested giving him another year at least to improve the OBP before making a rash decision we would later regret…
My take on Trumbo's low OBP

by Teixeira Who? on Feb 8, 2012 9:47 PM PST up reply actions
Considering the primary job of a hitter when he steps up to the plate is not making an out
I certainly would say OBP is a big deal.
by ~MMP~ on Feb 8, 2012 9:50 PM PST up reply actions 3 recs
I don't disagree
And I’m not saying that Trumbo’s low OBP needs to improve. What I am saying is that the “ZOMG LOW OBP HE CAN’T DO ANYTHING” camp needs to chill out. He was a rookie who put up some monster numbers and rose to the challenge when we needed him most. I guess I’m just blown away that the guy has played for one year, put up ROY numbers and everyone is so low on him. Maybe we wait at least another year or two before we close the book on him? I think the dude earned it. This isn’t the same as a Wood or Mathis wait and see but rather a “well this dude really exceeded expectations last year so let’s see if he can keep improving.” I mean, did anyone expect for Trumbo to compete for rookie of the year?
Again, to reiterate, I do think OBP matters. My point is that it isn’t the only stat and that Trumbo has certainly earned a chance to improve on it.

Nope
I want Trumbo to improve at 3B and have Morales at DH and Pujols at 1B. That would be the first time in ages we’ve have real power in all the right positions.
Where were you on December 8th, 2011 - Pujols Day?

But id also be happy with him just having league average defense lol..

I have weird Trumboptimism too.
I mean, this time last year the quote most attributed to him was “Not a major league player.” People said he was an outfielder who couldn’t play first base, and a hacker of so little skill that his raw power wouldn’t matter.
Then he showed the nay sayers they can stuff it. Sure, he has new challenges, OBP and 3B, but he seems to really attack obstacles. i don’t think he’s gonna ever be Brooks Robinson, but I think he’ll work hard and, just as he was a better 1B than we thought, he will not be a total disaster at 3B. If he pulls off mediocre defense, we have plenty of D oriented replacements for him.
I’d say he can get 110 – 130 starts at 3B, 1B, DH, and very few in the outfield (look at some of the random guys we sent out there last year) and if he does it with passable defense, hits more than 30HR, and his OBP improves even to .315-.320 I’d be OK. I mean his walk rate was SO LOW he’s got to be able to improve on it a little, and maybe he’ll be a little more protected in the line up now.
I love this team, I love this blog, I will never doubt Arte again and I can't wait to see what happens this year. That is all.

The only thing VW did differently last year than the year before, besides inflate his stats by playing half his games in Toronto, is buy into the Scioscia/Hatcher philosophy that a walk is as good as an out. 2011: .218/.248/.412. 2010(road stats): .224/.299/.400.

Great News!
looks like he’ll end up getting enough reps at 3rd base to see if he really sticks there and becomes our man at the position.

quick question
what if the Nats wanted P-Bo and said they would take vernon too! would u do the trade? and it can be for which ever players u wanna include on thier part.. Just askin…
Mark trumbo HR Counter-21
I'd do that for Rendon, Strasburg, Zimmerman, Storen, Clippard, and Harper.
Plus, the Nats have to take all of Big Vern’s salary.
