All winter it seemed like Spring Training would never start. Now, it is almost over. As more prospects get sent to minor league camp and the roster gets closer to being set, this is the time of year fans get to put on their General Manager hats. Who has impressed you this Spring?
Last year's winner in this poll was Mark Trumbo and he went on to a second place finish in the AL Rookie of the Year voting. HH'ers looked smart. Also receiving a lot of votes was Michael Kohn who served up some tape measure shots and ended up back in the minors. It was Spring Training for us, too.
As we headed into 2012, fan anticipation was so high it seemed as though it would be difficult for the team to just live up to the hype surrounding it. Exceeding expectations seemed unlikely. However, many players did just that.
Here are the players who really impressed me this year:
Howie Kendrick -- Many people are projecting Kendrick to have a breakout year hitting fastballs in front of Albert Pujols and he got started early in Spring Training. He is absolutely raking, hitting close to .400 with an OPS over 1.000
Kendrys Morales -- A natural hitter, he stepped up to the plate after a 22 month absence, sent a fastball into right field and has kept making contact. He is putting up great numbers already and should only get better as he gets into better baseball shape. Seeing him out there seriously gave me some goose bumps, maybe even some misty eyes.
Kole Calhoun -- He is quick, has a smooth swing, and always seems to contribute when he is in the game.
Brad Mills -- Maybe my bar was set too low when he was acquired for Premium. I figured he would have a pulse, but not much more. Mills has pitched well enough to enter the 5th starter debate or could potentially take Trevor Bell's role in the bullpen.
Taylor Lindsey -- Made as big of an impression as 14 at bats can create. This kid might make the drive out to the Inland Empire worth it if he keeps this up.
Several other Angels players have had solid Springs. Jean Segura blasted two homers at the game I attended in Peoria, Alexi Amarista continues to provide energy and results and C.J. Wilson has been dealing. Pujols has been solid and Vernon Wells is making solid contact and jokes with fans instead of turning bat handles into sawdust.
