OT: Like Art or Rockets? Check This Out...

A few months back, I started volunteering as the social media guy for an organization in my area called the San Diego Space Society. We are a non-profit organization whose mission is to educate the public about developments in space exploration, with a particular focus on the rise of the "new space" or private spaceflight industry. We operate a storefront/outreach center in the South Park area of San Diego, where we have meetings, host events for the public, offer science and math tutoring to local kids, arrange trips to areospace companies in the area, and things of that nature. Basically, we feel that this is an exciting time for spaceflight, because the birth of this new industry could open up space to the general public and provide a much-needed boost to the national and global economy in a relatively short amount of time...and we want people to know about it and get involved.

In that vein, we are planning to hold an art show running from mid-late July, in order to raise funds for the remodeling of our outreach center so that we can do more with it. We're looking for artists interested in submitting work right now, but you're also welcome to just stop by for the show and auction, if you want. Below is the artist recruitment flier for the event with further details.

There have been a lot of developments regarding the industry in the news lately, but if you're unaware of them, you should check out companies like SpaceX, Virgin Galactic, XCOR, Sierra Nevada, and others. A few weeks ago, you may have heard the announcement about a company called Planetary Resources backed by James Cameron and several other businessmen that plans to mine near-Earth asteroids for rare metals and other materials that would be a huge boost to the economy and life on Earth. This is the type of stuff we want to see succeed and make people aware of.

I hit Rev up to see if he knew anyone that might be interested, and he said it was cool if I made a post here about it. If you've got any questions, feel free to ask, and e-mail the address on the flier if you'd like to get invovled. At the very least, it's a reason for a day trip to SD...and if we raise enough money, I'll see about fanshotting DOV into space!

Consider this your off-day, off-topic thread. Engage the Destructobeam and may the Force be with Pujols.
