Hubris is the enemy in Baseball and I think that we as a fanbase, the FO, and the team itself was just so pumped, so blinded by "winning" the hot stove league. I was there at the Pujols/Wilson Press Conference. I got misty eyed and excited for baseball in December.
Then in Spring Training, every home game was pack to the gills. The Angels were destined to be winners and Pujols' batt could do no wrong.
So April came, the games actually needed to be played, nothing gelled, and attendance is down. Way down.
And I was disgusted, disinvested, and devastated.
But when Bobby was cut and Trout was promoted, something changed in me. The kid was back. Bad Attitude Bobby was gone, and I had realized that I meant to buy a new hat for the new season but I never got around to it. I set my mind to drive down to my lucky hat shop (Lids in Outlets at Orange neé The Block) to pick out a winner.
I was running late that morning -- I knew the hat must be bought before the first pitch, but it was a 1005 start. I got turned around, lost a little, and ended up at the Marketplace! But the baseball gods were smiling, Rain Delay in Minnesota. I picked out a nice fitted red with an ice white modern logo. My First modern logo cap (I prefer the lower case 'a' from '71).
And we won.
And we've been winning. And Jered got his No-No.
Is it this hat? Maybe. I can just imagine the closed door clubhouse talks, "Hey guys we need to put April behind us, and Kent got a new hat, so let's do this!"
But maybe it's just a good reminder to myself that I need to believe. That I need own and nuture my fandom for the Angels. That I must be responsible for my own rooting, for being a fan. The Angels need me, they need you, and they need each other. The FO also needs to remember that TV deals are nice, but putting butts in seats involves creating real connections to these guys, and giving us something to root for.
April was the bottom of my relationship with this team, I didn't give up on them, I just failed to care. That was wrong. I am sorry. Thanks for a great week of baseball, now keep it up against Toronto.
