Four Angels Named All Stars: Trout, Trumbo, CJ and The Weave

ANAHEIM, CA - JUNE 06: Mark Trumbo #44 of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim celebrates with Mike Trout #27 after scoring on a run against the Seattle Mariners in the second inning at Angel Stadium of Anaheim on June 6, 2012 in Anaheim, California. (Photo by Stephen Dunn/Getty Images)

Four Angels have been named to the 2012 All Star Game and a fifth player has a chance to be voted in by the fans. Lost in all of this is the absence of Albert Pujols from the midsummer classic. My analysis.

The following Angels were named to the 2012 All-Star Game:

Jered Weaver (third selection, third consecutive)

C.J. Wilson (second selection, second consecutive)

Mike Trout (first selection)

Mark Trumbo (first selection)

The four All-Stars are the most for the Angels since four were selected in 1995. 2012 marks the seventh time in franchise history the team has sent four or more players to the All-Star Game. A club record of six were sent to the Kingdome's hosting of the affair in 1979. Five Halos were named to the 1983 game and four went in 1970, the strike-shortened 1981, 1982 and 1995.

The Angels could have five players with the addition of relief pitcher Ernesto Frieri as a candidate for the final fan vote. Frieri is the fifth Angel nominated for the final vote, following Darin Erstad (2002), Bengie Molina (2003), Kelvim Escobar (2007) and Chone Figgins (2009).

Rookie Mike Trout will become the seventh youngest American League All-Star position player in the 79-year history of the Midsummer Classic. Trout will be 20 years, 11 months and three days on July 10. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the six position players younger than Trout to make an All Star team were:

  • Claudell Washington (20/10+ mos., 1975)
  • Al Kaline (20/9+ mos., 1955)
  • Mickey Mantle (20/8+ mos., 1952)
  • Ivan Rodriguez (20/7+ mos., 1992)
  • Ken Griffey, Jr. (20/7+ mos., 1990)
  • Butch Wynegar (20/4+ mos., 1976)

Trout received 832,439 write-in votes in the fan balloting. But perhaps most impressive is this fact unearthed by Angels radio engineer Darren Chan: Mike Trout is younger than 35 of the 50 players who have been named the All Star Week's Futures Game rosters.
