The Math IS There

This fanpost is 50% optimism and 50% about how dire and razor thin the Angels playoff hopes are at this point.....

Welcome to the Hail Mary zone

I retain the hope that the Angels could take off in the playoffs after how hard they've been pushed by Oakland and Texas. I think that we all feel that if the Angels actually pulled off a move in these last 5 games, and won all 5, we might get to see a Weaver, Grenke, Santana/Wilson – playoff rotation with a deeper bullpen, bolstered(?) by Haren and Santana/Wilson. With the scheduling of October and the Angels strengths – consider Pujols and St. Louis last year - there is still a glimmer of hope for the ultimate miracle.

That being said, that loss on Thursday to Seattle was as bad as when Jordan Walden threw our season into center field at this time last year – in the process of blowing a 3 run lead to Oakland.

The Angels will not catch the Rangers – I don’t recall many 5 game losing streaks by Texas this season and don’t expect one in the clutch after 2 WS appearances. But, on the bright side, the Angels can guarantee the Rangers need to win 2 of 3 against Oakland to avoid a tiebreaker. If the Angels win the next 2 against Texas (big if), then the Angels will either: still be 2 behind Oakland and 3 behind the Rangers or, better/best case scenarios, one or tied with Oakland and 3 behind Texas. This scenario puts pressure on both Texas and Oakland to win because, if one of them gets swept by the other, they could miss the playoffs altogether.

I just hope we don’t have to watch these also possible scenarios:
A. Wilson/Haren choke the season away in their last starts
B. Napoli, or any of the Rangers, blow the Angels season up with a multi HR game this weekend Sunday.
C. The Angels get close enough to taste it on the last day of the season and then have the blowpen implode the season one final time to put an exclamation point on their year.

As a side note: Since all my fears seem to be pitching related, I don’t see how Mike Butcher’s job isn’t on the line these last 5 games. For crying out loud, the Angels have one of the most valuable starting staffs in baseball and they can't win more than 92 games with the 2nd best offense in the AL? WTF?!?

This one's for you Angels pitching staff: Please don't let us down
