Greg Minton - Top 100 Angels #97

The Moon Man - Topps

This is the FOURTH Halos Heaven offseason Top Angels list we have compiled. We did a Top 100 Angels list after the 2005 season (LINK) and another one after the 2008 season (LINK) and we published a book after 2010, the fiftieth season of Angels baseball (LINK) of the Top 50 Angels of the first 50 seasons. With analytics being radically more sophisticated, look for this offseason's list to measure advanced metrics and traditional stats balanced with where a player rests in the hearts of every Halo Fan.

#97 - GREG MINTON, P

Ranked #94 in our post-2008 Top 100 Angels list (LINK)

Ranked #93 in our post-2005 Top 100 Angels list (LINK)

Greg Minton put in some great years of relief pitching for the Angels. In my 2008 write up of him (linked above) I casually pointed out that a few more good seasons of Jose Arredondo might bump Minton off the list. If to underscore the difficulty of a middle reliever actually cracking this list, Minton is still here and Arredondo long moved on from the club.

In the post-2005 write-up (linked above) is a splendid career recap of Minton (penned by Rob McMillin, aka scareduck), pointing out most spectacularly that the Angels got him after he was released from the Giants - so think of "Moon Man" Minton upon the occasion of a weird pickup of a guy you never heard of that some other team is finished with. Perhaps that pickup will accrue 5.1 WAR in 260 innings pitched like the Moon Man. Perhaps he will have a 0.1 HR/9 like the Moon Man accrued in 79 IP in 1988.

If there had been a wild card in 1989 (Minton's best season as an Angel and one of the best ever by a middle reliever in club history), the 91-Win '89 Angels could have put some post season innings under Minton's belt, but it was a different game back then, a different time. Still, The Moon Man still remains one of the 100 best of all time.
