Albert Pujols - Top 100 Angels #98

98th Best. - USA TODAY Sports

This is the FOURTH Halos Heaven offseason Top Angels list we have compiled. We did a Top 100 Angels list after the 2005 season (LINK) and another one after the 2008 season (LINK) and we published a book after 2010, the fiftieth season of Angels baseball (LINK) of the Top 50 Angels of the first 50 seasons. With analytics being radically more sophisticated, look for this offseason's list to measure advanced metrics and traditional stats balanced with where a player rests in the hearts of every Halo Fan.

#98 - Albert Pujols, 1B/DH

If Albert Pujols announced he was retiring form baseball today he might get bumped off this list if the club had to pay out the $200-Million+ they still owe him, but this ranking is not based on any future projection. In just over 1,100 Plate Appearances in an Angels uniform Pujols has put up some numbers great enough to justify at least this ranking.

Consider:

His 5.0 WAR 2012 season is ranked 31st best single season, the 4.2 of it that were offensive wins above replacement is also in the top 50 of single season achievements in franchise history. Despite the tag of being gimpy he had 607 ABs that year, 36th all time, and 670 PA also in the club's Top 50. The OPS+ of 138 ranks #30 single season mark for the club.

His 80 Extra Base Hits in 2012 matches Vlad's 80 XBH in his MVP 2004 campaign.

The sabre-heavy statistic "Adjusted Batting Runs" which really favors sluggers (defined at Baseball Reference with the cryptic "Statistic Description: Adjusted Batting Runs A set of formulas developed by Gary Gillette, Pete Palmer and others that estimates a player’s total contributions to a team’s runs total via linear weights) gives Albert 43 AdjBR - ranking 22nd all time in club history! THat is not just a single season. He had 33 AdjBR in 2012, which alone would rank 29th!

His 69 doubles so far is in the club's all time Top 50 and his 47 home runs ranks in the franchise Top 40.

So he has made a little itty bitty dent as an Angel. Hopefully his non-chronic Plantar Fasitis is behind him and he can outrun Father Time up the club's charts in the seasons ahead.
