Graphics Comparing David Freese to Peter Bourjos

Look that way--> - Harry How

Given the frenzy over the recent trade between the Angels and Cardinals, effectively a swap of Peter Bourjos for David Freese, I thought I would put together a visual comparison of some of the most frequently cited stats. I find this to be a helpful exercise when comparing two options (in this case players). Admittedly, these are primarily offensive categories, which will favor Freese. As a note, the games played and innings career numbers exclude 2009 for Freese, while the other figures include it. I know, I know, no consistency....but I was too GA to go back and adjust all the other figures to exclude 2009, so you'll just have to deal with it.

I have also included the standard deviation for each player in each statistical category in an attempt to identify the volatility of the player's production. This is a year-to-year comparison and excludes career averages or career totals. I'm sure there is a better measure for this exercise, but standard deviation is what I use in my professional life, so I figured I would start there.

There is obviously other information that impacts this trade (player control, organization depth, projected cost, player potential, positional differences, etc.), but all of that has already been discussed and debated thoroughly, so I will leave it out of this post. The only thing I will point out is that Freese seems to be more consistent, for better or worse, than Bourjos when it comes to production. I will spare you any further opinion or analysis and will let you come to your own conclusions, assuming you haven't already.

Enjoy(?):
