What if this is as good as it gets? What if an 0-4 Joe Blanton has been pitching at the level he will continue to pitch at when things are their very best - when the optimum club, Seattle, is held to two or three runs, the myth of the quality start be damned.
There are many components of the 2013 Angels team that we all hope get better. After 25 games we hope Joe Blanton gets better. We hope C.J. Wilson pitches more efficiently. We hope Jered Weaver heals up and goes back to being his old self. We hope Jason Vargas and Tommy Hanson are a but better than what they've shown.
Luis Jimenez is already falling back to earth and so we know that a sophomore slump could hit Mike Trout. If these 25 games were as good as it gets we are staring at a 66-Win season.
Impossible you say? It seems that Jerry Dipoto and Arte Moreno have built a team that is just good enough to lose. This is not measuring out a league average baseball team - this is seeing competency exploited by our opponents. The Angels have assembled a competent team with almost no standout who doesn't have an exploitable flaw. Hambone swings a lot, Pujols is achy, Trout has been over-scouted, Bourjos and Trumbo swing and miss a lot, Howie grounds out way too much, Napoli is long gone, Aybar is on the DL and the bullpen would be better off warming up at an ICU.
For the few games they lost on dumb luck there were two we know they won with one swing and a few others where the ball bounced their way. If luck is when preparedness meets opportunity, these Angels hardly seem prepared and are already deep into squandering some opportunities. This means they are not lucky and are not going to be lucky.
