Angels Finally Win In Houston After Umpires Make Up New Rules

Scott Halleran

The Angels beat the Astros 6-5 in a really, REALLY weird game.

FINAL IN HOUSTON: Angels 6, Astros 5, Umpires 0

Strange days indeed...

  • a pitcher entered the game and didn't throw a pitch,
  • Chris Iannetta goes to the plate 5 times, but only gets one at bat (he walked 4 times),
  • the Angels score 6 runs for the sixth time this season, but it's only the second time they've won when they do,
  • although they scored 6 runs, the Angel batters had just one hit with runners in scoring position,
  • Mark Trumbo drove in the tying and go-ahead runs with an "excuse-me-did-I-really-hit-it" double,
  • Astro pitchers walk 11 batters, but only two score,
  • Josh Hamilton had his second multi-hit game since April 22nd.
The Angels managed to finally win one in Houston, in one of the weirdest games in recent history. The game would have been played under protest due to Astro's manager Bo Porter replacing a pitcher who had entered the game, but not faced a batter. Although it's against the rules for a pitcher to be taken out without throwing a pitch (unless he's injured), the umpiring crew huddled, not once, but twice, and allowed the pitching change to take place. Halo manager Mike Scioscia then protested the game, which most likely would have been upheld had the Angels not won the game.

Garrett Richards got the win in relief, while Ernesto Frieri earned his fifth save after recording 5 outs, including 3 strikeouts.

The Halos have now won 3 of their last 10, and improve their record to 12-22, nine games behind the division leading Rangers.
