Angels Trade Candidates: Digging Holes to Fill Holes? the door THAT way??? - Harry How

With one of the weakest farm systems in baseball, the Angels would normally be expected to trade some MLB level pieces to replenish the system. However, the farm is so weak, that appears to be pretty much impossible to do without creating further holes at the MLB level for the foreseeable future. Here's my take on what we have, or more importantly don't have.

The Untouchables:

Mike Trout, Jered Weaver, Albert Pujols, Josh Hamilton, CJ Wilson. Most have no-trade clauses, three have untrade-able contracts and the other is Mike Trout.

The Conundrums:

Erick Aybar and Howie Kendrick are both under reasonable MLB deals with cost certainty and solid performance histories. Howie has been the only consistent performer on this team and is having, in my opinion, his best defensive year. However, there are no players in the pipeline ready to take either of their places any time soon. If we still had Jean Segura in the wings, this would be an entirely different story.

Tommy Hanson has been pretty steady this year and is under team control for a couple more years. Trading him creates another hole in a system lacking pitching while not likely getting a return ready to contribute at the MLB level any time soon, especially as a pitcher.

Jerome Williams is having a better statistical year than Hanson and has one year of arbitration left. Trading him now likely nets a prospect who doesn't justify creating a 1 1/2 year hole in the pitching staff, though.

The Likely Candidates With Little Value:

Scott Downs is in the last year of his deal, Alberto Callaspo doesn't have the typical 3B power numbers contenders typically desire, and depth is non-existent.

The Candidates With Trade Value:

Mark Trumbo. It would hurt to see the local kid go, but teams always love to get a big bat to help with the playoff push. He likely brings in the best value, but that creates a big whole in the next three years lineups. Peter Bourjos was a name in the rumor mills last year. If he shows he's healthy, expect those rumors to continue.

I don't see the possibilities of a major rebuild. Not with untrade-able players and contracts populating the roster. I don't see a ton of help coming without creating further holes or trading away fan favorites. In short, this year's trade deadline is likely to be as frustrating/disappointing as the months leading up to it.
