The Battle For Distant Third: Angels Defeat Mariners 5-1

Otto Greule Jr

Mike Trout's two-run homer and Kole Calhoun's run-scoring triple backed Jason Vargas in a winning effort for the Angels on Saturday night.

After several more reports this week, it seems more likely than ever that the ashes we've seen on the field this season are mostly debris falling from the top floor of a rapidly crumbling baseball organization. For the players themselves, preserving a sense of professional pride is the only goal that can still be achieved in the short time remaining. And dammit, overtaking even the Seattle Mariners in the standings is a battle worth fighting right about now.

Just not too fierce a battle. Tonight's game was a mostly sleepy affair, as late-season games between non-competing teams tend to be. Mike Trout's two-run homer in the first inning was the only remarkable play, as well as the only score, until both teams traded some defensive lapses for runs in the seventh. Kole Calhoun then announced bedtime with an RBI triple in the eighth, also scoring himself on a follow-up single from Chris Nelson. Sleep well, Seattle.

At least some of the lethargy resulted from Jason Vargas and the rest of the pitching staff actually doing their jobs. That's a welcome rest for everyone, even if it was not against the premier offense in the American League or anything. With a favorable pitching matchup tomorrow (Weaver vs. Harang), perhaps we can dream our own dreams until the Fall of the House of Moreno awakens us again.
