The results are in from yesterday's match!
In what looked like a close match on paper, Andrew Friedman absolutely CRUSHED Thad Levine 158-46 (77% to 23%). He moves on to face Scott Servais tomorrow.
As for today, we have our FIRST quarterfinals match: Oakland A's general manager Billy Beane, and MLB Senior VP of Baseball Operations Kim Ng.
Billy Beane has been the general manager of the Oakland Athletics since 1998. He served as a scout before that from 1990 to 1997, and played for the Mets, Twins, Tigers and A's between 1984 and 1989. As general manager his "moneyball" philosophy has revolutionized baseball, placing more emphasis on what used to be "outlier" statistics that are now mainstream (i.e. OPS, OPS+), and is one of the game's sabermetric pioneers. Known for making stars out of players such as Barry Zito, Josh Reddick and Grant Balfour, Beane is looked at as a hero to his supporters, and a pariah to his detractors. One of his assistants, David Forst, interviewed for the Angels' GM opening in 2011, and Beane himself was said to be on the Angels' wish list.
Kim Ng is almost indisputably the most powerful woman in baseball. Starting out by becoming baseball's youngest arbitrator working for the Chicago White Sox, winning a case for Alex Fernandez in 1995. From there she became an assistant general manager for the Yankees, and from there held the same position with the Dodgers from 2001 to 2011. She has been interviewed for three different GM positions (Dodgers, Mariners and Padres) but never offered the job. In 2011 she was offered, and accepted, the position of senior vice president of baseball operations for Major League Baseball, reporting to former Dodgers colleague Joe Torre. Ng has still been on many wish lists since accepting her league position, and should the Angels fire Dipoto, she would quite likely be on Arte Moreno's wish list.
Poll is below, closes at 12:00 PDT tomorrow. Feel free to discuss below! Remember, this is voting for WHO YOU WANT, not who you think will get it.
